  • How to take stock and prepare yourself, your homestead and your flock against the 2022 bird flu. The avian influenza is now in America. There are already reported cases in the Carolinas, the Tyson Food Company in Kentucky and turkey farms in Indiana. Chicken and egg shortages could be developing.
    What does this mean for consumers? What does this mean for homesteaders?
    I will cover both these questions and a few others in this video.
    Like what is the bird flu? How is the avian influenza transmitted? What are the symptoms (in chickens) of H5N1? What can you do to protect your flock from the bird flu?

      We don’t watch much tv or news. I don’t think it’s a National “thing” at least not yet. But here in Indiana ppl are starting to share about the turkey farms. That’s what had me look into it and prompted the video.
      Hopefully it will come to nothing…but it’s worth knowing and having a heads up.

    It is scary and somewhat convenient that it is happening right after/during a lot of other crazy things in the world. Because we keep a rare breed, one of the ways we try to prevent a full flock cull, is to split our birds into multiple coops. That way if any appear to develope a illness, it only effects 1/4 of the flock. Now unfortunately with the bird flew, we have no ability from having to cull the whole flock if authorities say it is necessary. Hopefully it doesn't become a bigger problem. I think you are right about the availability and prices from hatcheries this year. Great video.

    • @AbundantAcresHomestead
      @AbundantAcresHomestead  2 года назад +3

      They say when it rains it pours right…hopefully we’ll see the rainbow soon! That’s a great idea to run multiple flocks. We had thoughts to do an early cull on the few we got last year at the end of this season…now I’m thinking we’ll hold off a year. Hopefully it’s contained soon and it won’t reach the point of causing availability and price increases but better to be prepared…especially the way things have been going.

    • @AbundantAcresHomestead
      @AbundantAcresHomestead  2 года назад +3

      Last two rounds they shut down all chicken sales, even the chicks. You couldn’t find a chick anywhere, and if you could one was pretty weary about buying them. But it may not get as bad this round? The news is just now reporting it here, we’ve had another turkey farm just shut down. I just wanted people to be aware that it may cause an issue on down the road. 😉👍

There’s a auction house about a couple hours from our house they sell everything from cows, pigs, chickens, llamas even sell hay. It’s a pretty fun place to go but ya gotta watch because it’s also where some ppl unload their problem animals. Kenny doesn’t let me go anymore because “I can’t be trusted” 😂 He’s right…I’d have every critter roaming around out here 🤣 Been there, done that…feed bill was expensive! This was great info. I have a flock the has lost there gullet in the past month. They all seem fine except for our rooster he hasn't been crowing. • @AbundantAcresHomestead
      @AbundantAcresHomestead  2 года назад +3

      Do they free range? Was he crowing before and just recently stopped? So many questions and possibilities. I can say my first go to when I see a crop issue is boosted water (mix lemon, cayenne, cinnamon in water) it helps break down and gives an immune boost. As far as the crowing it could be age, maybe something attacked or scared him, stress or bullying? If he seems fine other than crowing it’s probably one of the above. If he seems lethargic he could not be feeling well. Hard to tell without seeing or giving them a good once over.

    • @AbundantAcresHomestead
      @AbundantAcresHomestead  2 года назад +1

      It’s possible that they got into some long grass, that could goop up their crop. You may keep them penned (if possible) for a couple weeks to see if the problems clear up. If he just stopped I’d assume it is a stresser (he’s being quite to not gain attention)?

      @elainekomara8555 2 года назад +2

      Coccidiosis is common and is somewhat natural..Call means kill their chickens.. I wonder if this wasn’t done purposely.. just like all the increase in prices in canned foods.. so sad for those birds.. give them medicated foods .. why isn’t that good enough..? Very sad.. I’ve never seen so much garbage going on in America.. God help us.. Why can’t vets give the birds antibiotics..?? Is there a reason that they don’t do that..? It’s very rare that the bird flu will be spread to humans..

    • @AbundantAcresHomestead
      @AbundantAcresHomestead  2 года назад +2

      It is very rare, I hope you didn’t get the impression that it was something to be concerned with? I tried very hard to explain that it wasn’t something to be fearful of. Yes I use the term cull because RUclips would flag me using the other. It’s commonly spread when the geese are flying north or south so I don’t believe it was intentional (this is third year that I’m aware it’s run through).
      By the time it’s found it’s too late, it VERY contagious. So by industry standards they have no option but to cull, clean and start over with healthy birds. Commercially they wouldn’t be able to sell (for human consumption) birds that are or have been sick.

    I will keep an eye out for these signs
    This fall and winter we had a big problem with Merrick disease
    All the questioned birds were paralized before they died or we had to cull them
    But reading up on Merricks disease it can lower the birds immune system and cause them to die from another illness as well
    After watching lots of world news we might have big problems ahead teaching clean techniques can be very helpful
    Our chickens have been doing ok now but our quail are dieing...but most if not all have been them hurting themselves in one way or another...or could have been an older or picked on bird
    My quail are inside in several small groups i think im going to keep breeding them
    Maybe a few chicken chicks will be hatched too because im using broody chickens to hatch the quail and they sneak a few of their own eggs in too lol cant blame them lol

    • @AbundantAcresHomestead
      @AbundantAcresHomestead  2 года назад +2

      Oh that’s terrible, thankfully we personally have never had to deal with Merricks. Our friends did and we had to help cull over 200 chickens and scrub down the coop and sanitize the pens. So sorry you’ve had fowl problems. I miss having a broody when it comes hatching season…they’re happy to hatch any egg 😂
