  • *WARNING - FLASHING LIGHTS IN THIS VIDEO*
    The Glarry GTL Telecaster - you've heard much of it, and much of it probably not so great. Is this as 'interesting' of a guitar as they say it is? Will I be totally dismayed, or pleasantly surprised? And can I turn this bargain basement bottom-of-the-butter-churner guitar into... A monster? You'll need to watch to find out!
    Also, I hadn't gotten a haircut forever, and had the first stirrings of a mullet coming on in this vid. Trust me, a much needed haircut happened... After the shoot...
    As always, this video is not a paid, nor funded promotion. The guitar and all parts were purchased by myself.

    I bought one of their GST models and put a new pickguard on with one Gibson p90, a Noventa of sorts. The original strat style pickups weren't bad, but the tremolo sucked, I had to file out the opening more so the tremolo would function properly in the cavity, and, well, you know tremolos. I put CTS 500 pots in, and put brass roller bridges and a heavier Wilkinson brass trem weight in with a push in whammy bar, and even a Trem-set. Each thing I did helped a little bit. It looks fine, and plays ok, if you like the baseball bat neck. My neck was okay, but I put a Goldtone Zerofret on it, better sustain. If I was a young kid who got this as a present I would have been discouraged immediately, because out of the box it sucked, and even after all the things I did to "fix" it, it is just okay, but I did it to see if I could do it, and it does have a nice Gibson p90 in it. Oh, I also put D'Addario locking tuners on. Thanks for your review!

      Nice mod combo! I'd love to see that in action! I think we can all agree that these Glarrys are overall mediocre guitars - but for the price, a no-brainer for customization. And in my opinion, these are overall still better than the 'dark era' of cheap Chinese copies from the late 90s and early 2000s... I bought strat copies back then almost new with dead pickups, holes straight through the body cavity into the tremolo, and even tremolo blocks which broke into pieces after only a few dive bombs. Comparatively, these really aren't as bad!

    I bought one of the semi-hollow with a neck humbucker last month for $99. I expected it to be bad, and was somehow still disappointed. Glarry gave me half my money back and I got to keep the guitar. I'm glad yours worked out a little better.

      That's too bad! Yeah these Glarry's are often near the lower levels of construction quality. Mine was still not a good guitar by any means, even after some extensive work, but it's playable. When it was right out of the box, it was mostly unplayable.

    Woulda been nice to hear some clean sounds. With that much distortion, it almost doesn't matter what's going through it.

      Good point - and good idea for a 'one year later' video! I may just do a quick clean tone version of this so stay tuned!

    I have heard the fret wire used on Glarry models is the worst Chinesium and wears away pretty fast, the trouble with their clear coated maple fretboards is that if you pull the frets to replace them there is a good chance the poly clear coat will crack and you may have to re-finish parts of the fretboard, there is plenty of meat on the neck so a re-shaping of the neck is possible if it is not to your liking.
    I have quite a large Harley Benton collection and have modded some of them, not that they were bad guitars or bad parts its just that I am a guitar tart and like to have nice parts on them, their TE-62 is a great modding platform!

    Whenever I hear the words "good modding platform" concerning a tele,, my first thought is "does the total cost of the guitar plus the mods add up to more than the price of a squire ffinity series ... those things are amazing for the money!

    Why did you show the P90 going into a red Tele and not the black one you started on?

    • @nilesthrompton
      @nilesthrompton  8 месяцев назад

      That was a result of moving from one province to another... I stupidly filmed the mod in a hurry a week before I moved, and then of course when I set up at my new place, I realized the p90 shot for the glarry was missing... So I had to use the red guitar as an example, since the Glarry's p90 was already in place.

    Your musical intermissions made me laugh
    Still would never buy one. Or spend another $200 to make it playable.

      I agree - the neck on this guitar was not bad. The fit and finish was just rock bottom. I ended up getting a good sounding guitar - after putting way too much money into it - but a multi ply body with poor hardware and unusable pickups is usually not worth owning or modding.
