      Hi Lisa. They'll be great for portraits. I've seen portrait photographers use them (Julia Trotti springs to minds), but I'm really interested to hear how you get on photographing musicians. Especially if you get to photography them in concert. I would imaging that the lighting will really help the filters create some spectacular effects. Thanks for watching.

    Never seen these before so it was really interesting. I do a fair bit of macro stuff, so this filter approach would potentially add something different. Many years ago in the days of slides, I went through a phase of using a cheap Cokin UV filter on the front of the lens and then using vaseline, applied with a finger to add soft focus wherever I wanted it in the frame. Depending on the amount (usually thin by the way) i could create smears etc to add variety to the concept.
    I never tried it, but I was aware of some people using the same concept in the darkroom by applying vaseline or a thin coating of oil using a paintbrush to a sheet of glass that was positioned between the enlarger lens and the paper.
    Thanks for your ideas, really inspirational.

      Thanks Dave. I can see now that you have worked you way through a few videos. So thank you very much for that. It's interesting how a lot of these old ideas from the film photography days make a comeback and get updated. I guess good ideas stay good even if the way we achieve them changes. Glad you're enjoying the videos And if you've got any content you'd like to see, feel free to suggest it. I can't always promise I'll be able to make the video, but I certainly try to get to as many of them as I can.

    Hi Scott. Very creative macro shots. I also have a Sony 90mm macro and just got the Omni system a few days ago. I notice that your apertures range from wide open to stopped down to around f/8 or so. When you're shooting at close range, I'm guessing you are stopping down? When are you shooting wide open are you trying to achieve shallow dof? I saw a video that recommends shooting around f/4, otherwise if you stop down, the omni wand becomes in focus. I would like to hear from you what you think. Thanks. I would like to see other videos how you use the omni system on landscape or other types of photography as well as macro.

    • @WalksOnTheWildSide
      @WalksOnTheWildSide  Год назад

      Sorry for the delay in replying. There's no way that with most macros lenses the wand will become in focus, it is way to close to the lens. So unless you have an unusual lens where the working distance is basically right by your front element, they will not come in to focus (an example would be the Laowa 15mm wide-angle macro which has an incredibly short working distance, but most standard macros lenses are going to be longer than that). So go with whatever aperture works for the picture. When I'm using the Omni filters, the choice of aperture is usually about how intense I want the effect to be. Wider aperture = brighter and softer, narrower aperture = less bright and clearer. I hope that helps and thanks for watching.

    It is funny in the days of film, we went thru great lengths to avoid those effects, generally caused by light leaks either in the camera or during processing in the darkroom. It was the greatest of sins.

    • @WalksOnTheWildSide
      @WalksOnTheWildSide  Год назад

      Yes, funny how trends turn around isn't it? It amazes me how many of the youngsters add grain in to their photos artificially nowadays, when I've spent years trying to get the cleanest images I can. But these things come and go. Thanks for watching.

    • @gradywilson9213
      @gradywilson9213 Год назад

      @@WalksOnTheWildSide For decades I had my own darkroom, went thru exhausting procedures to reduce grain. Pushed film to gain one F-stop or two. Digital has made all of that absolete, I like Digital a time saver. Enjoy the presentations I am always looking to learn something new.

    absolutely fab I have some tat i have borrowed but had no idea how to use Your video is clear and precise unlike loads ive watched before One question do you need to edit the photos after you take them in any way especially macro do you have to focus stack or are they just one shot

    • @WalksOnTheWildSide
      @WalksOnTheWildSide  Год назад

      Hi Eileen. I do edit photos, but I rarely focus stack. Not that I have anything against focus stacking, I just don't particularly enjoy it. I also think that part of the charm of macro is the shallow depth of field. I've got a few editing videos if you're interested, but I haven't made a macro editing video yet. So I will add that to the list. Thanks for watching.

    Hi, love your video. Will the omni filter also work on a zoomlens? I have a 50mm lens and a zoomlens 18-140mm but they have different filter sizes. one is 58 (50mm) and the other is 67 ( 18-140mm). I dont want to buy 2 packs, so i am struggling for wich of the lens i should buy it. Do you have some tips or tricks for me.

    • @WalksOnTheWildSide
      @WalksOnTheWildSide  2 года назад +1

      Hi. Yes there will be no problem to use with a zoom lens. You'll want the pack that fits your largest filter size. The pack comes with some step up and step down filters, for example the 62-82mm pack has a 82mm diameter but includes rings to get you to everything down to 62 mm. So this will work with your 67mm. For your other lens you can just get some additional step down rings to get to 58mm. These cost very little and you should be able to get them on Amazon or from your local camera shop. I hope this helps.

    Lovely images and well explained, I'm interested in Kaleidoscope images where say a person or any subject is duplicated many times to create a circle of the subject, does this system do that, or do I need to but the hand held filters that are on Amazon thanks.

    • @WalksOnTheWildSide
      @WalksOnTheWildSide  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Alan. You can duplicate a person using the crystal seahorse but not in a uniform way like you would with a kaleidoscope filter. You’ll also get lots more duplications with a kaleidoscope filter. But I’ve not used one of these before so can’t recommend any particular brand.
