As a recent convert to Islam it’s both very humbling and very disheartening to see this chapter in my faith’s history. Seeing the mighty empire, forged on military might and the deep seated faith that was felt in the hearts of so many people, becoming so powerful and culturally significant. And seeing the same empire fall due to its falling into sin, the same sin which can bring down a person can bring down a mighty empire. Allah’s love guides us to peaks unlike any other, but also to lows unlike any other in history when it is ignored or spurned. Our culture, history, and faith as Muslims have seen some of the proudest and most crippling moments in history. And the Abbasid caliphate is a perfect showcase of that, and how even the mighty can be weakened and fall due to its sin.
Inspired by Sheikh Ahmed Deedat greed seeped into the hearts of the army, and weakness seeped into the hearts of the sultans. Allah gave them greatness and took it away whenever they began to move from him.

Lucid descriptions of personalities and contexts makes an hourlong journey to medieval Islamic world fantastic and leaves deep impression on mind. Buddhist karjites are less known to ordinary people.I express my gratitude.
Just wanna point out that an islamic caliph isn't 'gods representative on earth' to muslims because in islam spiritual leaders be they caliphs or imams and what not are prohibited from being like their christian counterparts to avoid the borderline worship christian priests and most notably saints recieve ( islam as a whole is incompatible with christianity's idea of priesthood, except from the shia's, sufis, and other sects) they are only the successors of the prophets political powers
It's an allusion towards the catholic pope as he is sometimes referred to as God's representative on Earth. He is alluding to the pope because the pope and the caliph are similar positions. Both are "successors" to an original religious leader - the pope as the bishop of Rome is the successor of Saint Peter (one of Jesus' apostles and regarded as the first bishop of Rome). The caliph is the successor of Mohammad. Both are regarded by many to have authority over all of Christendom/Ummah.
It really isnt, even in the medieval age it wasn't, except from the first few caliphs and some exceptions the Caliphs power dwindled immensely, by the time of the crusades the caliph was just a figure head whose only real power was sultanship over his own personal demesne, power was largely delegated to local sultans who undermined the caliphs power at almost every turn. In the crusades for example it was saladin, a local secular sultan that led the organized jihad against the crusaders while the caliph sat cozy in baghdad. Meanwhile the pope in rome had signifigant influence over medieval politics, he could excommunicate and allow divorces, declare things heresies at will, call for crusades, and just had more overall power over secular kings
The caliph didnt impact the lives of the everyday muslim, or even the muslim nobility of sultans and wali's nearly as much as the pope did everyday europeans and european nobility and royalty
The islamic sunni ortodox view is that mankind is God's representatives on earth, the Prophet being the perfect representative of him in creation, but you're right in Islam there's no pope or clerical hierarchy, being the shias more near to this. And by the way, sufis are not sect, they're sunni muslims.

I really do wish more people would talk about the islamic golden age, to be fair, ive heard most of europes stories over and over again between their fame and the number of channels focused around it. Even the majority of the greek cities and colonies get ignored typically. Things like the greek mercenaries in asia, i didnt even know about the greeks in bactria fighting the chinese until recently
Imagine Yemeni sailors going to Papua New Guinea in the 1200s...because it happened Arab sociologists from Baghdad travelling to the Baltic...because it happened Tatars from Emirate of Bukhara, travelling (and converting Aboriginal Mansi) to the frozen tundras of the Arctic. There was a Muslim khanate in Siberia! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khanate_of_Sibir
Well, if you love to read history, you may find some fascinating story in the past like the early Indonesian invasion of east Africa (probably during Srivijaya Empire), naval battle in Malacca (Portugese vs Java), etc.
It's really astonishing how this period of power corresponds with Empires in India, who used to regularly trade with Baghdad. Back then, riches from the Abbasids like Arabian horses and Persian Rugs were extremely valuable items Nobles in India purchased, and it was traded for Jewels and Spices.

The Mamluk Turks of the Bahariya regiment of the Egyptian army, under the command of their leader Rukn ad Din Baibars, suddenly launched a ferocious charge and massacred the Franks. Cairo was trembling with anxiety, so far the Messenger pigeons had only bought bad news. Next morning a Wednesday, news of Baibars victory reached the capital. The city prepared for a feast and the glad tidings were announced by a roll of drums. The victory over the Franks caused great joy and exultation." This was the first battle in which the Turkish lions defeated the infidels dogs "reports Ibn Wasil. The revived Muslims followed this up with a stupendous triumph on 7 april 1250 once again Mamluks were both the most courageous and the most audacious. " They were Islams Templars, " writes Ibn Wasil.
Had the incompetent mameluks and Turks done their job, the battlefield would have been in Europe not in the heart of the Middle East, a stone's throw away from Mecca.

Yes another video from history time. Hallo from Denmark . Yes sir another great video . You really cover the Golden age of islam very well . Yes ancient greek texts were indeed saved and improved upon by arab scholars. And yes the hindu- arabic numerals that we use today were indeed (arab traders brought them into middle east from india ) brought into europe from muslim controlled Spain or al Andalus as it was also called. And that number system did indeed out compete the roman numerals. So much that as U have mentioned before in an earlier comment . That the numbers have been found in carved into the wodden beams on the attic in english church in early 12 century. So they were alteady in use on the British isles during reign of the english King Henry the third ... . And places like Baghdad , Cordoba in spain and muslim controlled Scicily became center of learning . Where many europeans went to study.. And it was seen as huge prestige to studied there . But arabs also brought another thing that shaped modern ... The arabs were first grind coffee beans , then brew it and drink coffeee ...The coffeee bean is native plant to region . Its orginally from Ethiopia in Africa .... And through trade contacs coffee and the coffee bean spread into the rest of middle east and then into europe. So when you walk into cafe and order a coffee latte. Remember that Its only possible because of arab traders ....
I am an idiot . Hallo from Denmark again . There is another importent thing that from the arab World that shaped European history in a very importent way and without it . And I forgot to mention it . European medevil and early modern history woud have looked very different without it And I am of course takling about the Arabian horse . It enteted europe after the first crusade in 1095... Returning crusader knight brought then back as spoils of war . And in in the centuries as light calveri evolded . The arabian horse has reputation of being fast .... That breed of horses made the heavy armored war horse obsolete. Arabian horses and their descendents was used on many european battle fields in centuries after.... So thats another arabian infuence that has had huge impact of World history ....
@@madsdahlc all of these examples you brought just shows Arabs as simply intermediaries between India and Europe Even if Arabs would not have risen to power someone else will fill this role (you got to be stupid if you think we wouldn't drink coffe today if it wasn't for Arabs)

i find it absolutely fascinating how Pre-Islamic Iranian culture and Zoroastrianism were incorporated and assimilated into Islamic culture and religion during the Abbasid period. Thank you for highlighting this!!
@Alliam Isaman the rise of muslims in itself is the epitome of dark ages. Islam is a religion of hate and terror. Used only for political means, there is no spiritual meaning to it.
@Floofy shibe thanks for your prayers. I respect what you believe and i have no hate in me. I just wrote what i feel about the islamic institution as such
52:45 "... mathematics effectively began during this era too." Ah, no. Euclid was solving quadratic equations back in ~300 BC. Archimedes created an algorithm for calculating pi in around 250 BC. Eratosthenes devised an algorithm for identifying prime numbers in the 3rd century BC. He also calculated the circumference of the earth using the differences between the angles of shadows at different places on the summer soltice. The ancient Babylonians and Greeks were already using what we call algebra more than a millennium before the Abbasid Caliphate existed (think a^2 + b^2 = c^2, for example). The ancient Sumerians, the Maya, the Chinese and the Indians were all developing mathematics well before the Abbasid Caliphate existed as well. Other points: 1.The concept of zero existed even in places where the prevailing numeral system didn't include a symbol for it. 2. Zero isn't really all that important in mathematics. 3. Indian/Arabic numerals didn't in any way make computing possible because binary code isn't dependent on the symbols 0 and 1. It could just as easily use the symbols @ and #. In either case, they're just symbols representing the concepts "on" and "off". 4. Numeral systems don't make mathematics possible or impossible, because are just symbols representing concepts. When you add 4 and 5, you aren't adding the numerals, you're adding the concept of four to the concept of five. You can use Indian/Arabic numerals, in which case you've just memorized that 4+5=9, or you could, for example, use Roman numerals, in which case IV+V = IVV = IX.

MAMLUKS 1250-1517 A Crusader invasion of Egypt (1249-1250) and the rise of the Mongol threat in the east gave military clique in Egypt the opportunity to initiate a coup which overthrew the Ayyubids and established the Mamluk Dynasty. The Mamluks were Turkish military slaves who have been purchased as young men, raised in vigorous military training program, and enrolled in elite military units. These Mamluk warriors were renowned for their military skill in horsemanship and archery and proved the equal to both European knight and the mounted Mongol archer. Under their brutal but brilliant sultan Baybars(1260-1277) the Mamluks managed to stem the Mongol advance into Syria and expel the Crusaders from all but a few coastal cities. The Last Crusaders were massacred by the Mamluks at the city of Acre(1291). Thereafter the Mamluks ruled Egypt, Syria and western Arabia for two centuries.
Beautiful presentation. Thank you. Also like the British accent. Three defining moments in history, the fall of Baghdad, the fall of Constantinople, and the fall of the Ummayad Caliphate in al-Andalus.(Spain), not to mention Carthage and others.

Both are "successors" to an original religious leader - the pope as the bishop of Rome is the successor of Saint Peter (one of Jesus' apostles and regarded as the first bishop of Rome). The caliph is the successor of Mohammad. Both are regarded by many to have authority over all of Christendom/Ummah.
the reason why he said that is because the influence of the caliph on the empire was the same as the pope
Dude it's been a while.
May I know when we're getting part 3 of this wonderful series? Really appreciate the hardwork behind it.
Man I can't imagine you working some dead end job instead of making these videos.thank god for RUclips. U gotta be the best I've found so far.ty history time
This series is amazing and very amusing. As I am Iranian, I did not learn any of these in the school history because of the regime's policy. Please make other videos on Abbasid caliph history. Thanks.

Thank you for the video. You've covered so much history in a one hour video. Thumbs up.
Thanks!
PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! CONTINUE THIS SERIES! One of the best ever on U tube!
A most excellent presentation. It tied in much of my personal knowledge. Well told, beautiful graphic interaction.
Like sycophants do you? Tell you what you already know? Bit narrow don't you think?
I really do wish more people would talk about the islamic golden age, to be fair, ive heard most of europes stories over and over again between their fame and the number of channels focused around it. Even the majority of the greek cities and colonies get ignored typically. Things like the greek mercenaries in asia, i didnt even know about the greeks in bactria fighting the chinese until recently
It’s a fascinating topic
Imagine Yemeni sailors going to Papua New Guinea in the 1200s...because it happened
Arab sociologists from Baghdad travelling to the Baltic...because it happened
Tatars from Emirate of Bukhara, travelling (and converting Aboriginal Mansi) to the frozen tundras of the Arctic.
The ancient greeks aren't ignored.

One of the best documentaries of the Abbasids I've ever seen, it's even better than the Arabic documentaries themselves!!
It's really astonishing how this period of power corresponds with Empires in India, who used to regularly trade with Baghdad. Back then, riches from the Abbasids like Arabian horses and Persian Rugs were extremely valuable items Nobles in India purchased, and it was traded for Jewels and Spices.
Of course the Arabians and the Indians has had great history in trade. Their contribution to the Silk Road has merely shaped it. Two great empires.

Amazingly described!!loved the video hope you make the complete series till the mongol invasion and mamluks period as well!
The quality of documentaries like these and history marche should make TV producers feel ashamed.
Among other things, in antiquity is a great place to let the worries of the present subside for a time. These presentations are totally conducive.
The notification from your channel flatters my heart just like how a crush's message does
Excellent backing music makes an already fantastic narrative documentary....Crescendo?
You've got a serious knack for this, it almost doesn't matter what period in history. I listen to this show at work and many times I listen a 2nd time. As my mind drifts into these places and periods, I almost feel guilty for being on the clock and having such a good time.

to make correction at 13:35 you said 'his older brother abul abbas" but in reality abul jaffar al mansur was the oldest of the two. but abul abbas ruled first because his mother was a free arab woman while abu jaffar's mother was a slave woman. Very informative thanks.

@@madsdahlc all of these examples you brought just shows Arabs as simply intermediaries between India and Europe
Even if Arabs would not have risen to power someone else will fill this role (you got to be stupid if you think we wouldn't drink coffe today if it wasn't for Arabs)

At one time Islamic scholars were the light of the world. This is what fundamentalism does
Who implanted this fundamentalism in the last 200-300 years?
The zero concept & Pythagorean theorems were also used in Babylon
@@felixii4931 Apparently not, because mathematics didn't begin until the Abbasid Caliphate.
@@Marmocet
lolwut, google babylonian mathematics, sumerian mathematics, egyptian mathematics, etc etc

MAMLUKS 1250-1517
A Crusader invasion of Egypt (1249-1250) and the rise of the Mongol threat in the east gave military clique in Egypt the opportunity to initiate a coup which overthrew the Ayyubids and established the Mamluk Dynasty.

Quick note, the caliph is not ‘gods representative on earth’ as the video suggests
He thinks it is like European Monarchs.
I believe he said that in order to simplify it. Since explaining the position of caliph would need a proper explanation which takes time. When it’s simply easier and quicker to say he’s God’s representative on earth.
Fi amaan Allah.
