The other ding for me was the distances and time. It was only at most a day of traveling to the Mayan temple. This not realistic, how could they not know this powerful empire that sacrificed 1000s of people a year, but they were oblivious to them?
I thought the movie was amazing. I didn't know the movie existed until about 3 years ago. There was another intriguing movie with people placed in a cage by natives. It had gory scenes as well. It seems Apocalypto had a bigger budget. I found Apocalypto trying to find the other movie. Glad I found it.

Although not historically accurate and choosing Mayan as opposed to Tolted,Aztec culture its allegorical jabs were landed that is survivak and integrity are prevalent regardless of era and each empire/ era comes to an end or is usurped.Great film in my opinion.
In a way, apocalypto is more catholic than Passion. Notice, in the beginning, the tribe that was beaten down are “going to the forest to make a new start.” This exact phrase is used by the main character after his wife suggests they go to the Spanish ships. Paganism is a circle. There is no progress. Its a dead end. Gibson is a traditional catholic and completely understand s this. The cross of Christ represented by the Spanish, who come not to oppress, the natives are already oppressed by themselves and paganism, but to liberate them from their sins and devil worship. The cross is dynamic, it breaks out, and it smashes paganism. The cross brought by whites, ended the brutality of the Mayans, probably the most bloodthirsty religion in history.
Ironic some of historical events are not true? The small pox illness scene didn't happen at that time period eight to six hundred years ago before European contact. But another may have another illness disease happen there. The ancient myans never met the Spanish European ships there. Because of the six hundred years apart from each other. The aztics the Spanish met at that time period. The ancient myans civilization died out because cutting down to much of the trees! That's want destroyed there crops during the raining season coming down from hills and mountains. Your talking to a native American about this question.
