It's interesting that back then each city had a different swing...even each generation that was represented in the Golden Age of Gospel Music had a different way of handling those songs. Marion puts a funky 60s groove on this and Mahalia's version has a bluesy barrel house feel to it. Clara Ward gives it a jazz club meets revival tent feel... Joe May gives it field holler accents... Who can get tired of Golden Age Gospel Music...the singers back that were geniuses...very artistically gifted.
I had the great joy and privilege of seeing this truly incredible artist sing at the Circle Star Theater in Northern California, in the '70s: simply incomparable! A magnificent, gracious lady - I got her autograph! :D I've lived during wonderful musical times and been blessed with the opportunity to see many fabulous artists (B.B, the Beatles, Lightnin' - those were the days! :D ) Clara Ward at the Golden Horseshoe in Disneyland was my introduction to Gospel and, though I am not a believer, I am most certainly a devoted appreciator of Heavenly music. Miss Marion deserves a Starry Crown if ANYbody does!
this lady had some vocals on her ! a gift from GOD! the sad thing is that we'll never hear a voice like this again !! but Im happy to know that when Ms.Williams moved over to the other side she Thanked Jesus face to face for making it over! Amen!
stars2luv Marion had been singing pretty to the end of her life. To answer your question, No! Mahalia Jackson, Willie Mae Ford Smith and many other gospel singers growl and never had no problem with their vocals.

Thank You..
Thank you for posting these wonderful performances. The gospel singers always loved live audiences the best, it reminded them of being in church.
She And Mahalia Was The Best We Have Ever Had.
Absolutely

She was the best...
That’s how we did it in the Holiness church
I have listened to this arrangement of How I Got Over on one of Marion's CDs a thousands times. So amazing to see her improv it live!
Can those fantastic musicians get a shout-out, especially the drummer at the end with that seriously funky beat?
Even if you aren't saved I don't think you can listen to her and not cut a step...LOL!!!
I love this video 🗣Thank God for Jesus, prayers that have covered me throughout my life, and my ancestors🌈 that left a legacy of faith behind. 💛🙏💜📿
@2:35 when the kids are talking in church and you gotta look at em so they hush up!!!
That's how she got that stripe in her hair! It appeared spontaneously!
My Lord I wish she would have stayed with the Wards one more week to tape for tv lol
@PennTrafford Oh that where that came from LOL
lol well, MOST of them are clapping in time... ;-)
I wonder did Mother Ward see this tape lol
Por cierto, soy atea. Ahora bien, si Dios existe, esta voz lo debiera haber maravillado, siendo quien la hubo creado
She's so pretty when she smiles. Btw, wouldn't her growls damage her larynx..?
Not at all. Black GOSPEL singers have 'SHOUTED' for years. Its almost like a lip trill in the throat.

LOOLL. Look at them white folk clapping out of time. :)
