In fact, I feel insulted because, in a way, it shows how very little faith they had on my intelligence.

The legality of something has very little to do with its quality. For years a the average American actually believed that because cannabis was illegal it must be "bad". The claim against The Great Gatsby was "obscenity". It's important to separate value judgments from the legal status of anything. ...Anyway, it's not banned. This country is truly falling apart if we are focusing on regulating these books in school. Schools are underfunded and teachers are sadly underpaid. Like wake tf up!
Actually you are incorrect America is 2nd in the world on what we spend per student 23,000 it's the corruption in the school system the money never makes to the teachers or classrooms or schools it's sucked up by the schools administration that controls the school districts 2nd other countries spend half as much 11,000 per student by 6 grade the student can speak 4 language and test why higher than our students in math English science ect and some only have school 4 hrs a day but the money makes to teachers, classrooms, and resources check out New Zealand school system
@@oldtestament8052 This isn't true. Schools mostly rely on their state's property taxes, and then some state/fed funds. Schools that are in poorer areas subsequently get less of this money and therein lies the inequitable outcomes of the American education system. Corruption is no doubt prevalent in this country on multiple levels but with regards to the school system that is not necessarily the case. To go to your second point about kids speaking multiple languages in other countries, that also relates to under funding. You have to realize that a lot of the schools have to cut certain programs if they don't have the money. Language classes, art, and even honors classes go out the window. I went to a school so severely underfunded that by the time I reached the 10th grade all of the AP classes were cut and we had to share textbooks. Lastly, the 4 hours of school a day has nothing to do with the topic at hand. We have long school days because we keep to the archaic time system, while also constantly pushing for standardized testing that doesn't really help kids retain any information. Our system is extremely flawed. Our teachers are overworked, and paid low wages for the multiple hats they have to wear at their jobs. I've seen teachers not only educate, but play social worker, therapist, and mediator.
Now you want freedom of speech when is about innocent children to be indoctrinated with progressive ideas. Lets leave that idea for the adults. Let the kids alone, their parents will indoctrinate them with progressive or conservative ideas as they please. Then let the free speech for the adults, so I can CHALLENGE trans culture and debate if it's a virtue or a mental disorder. But extreme left only wants to stop people able to think from speaking and go with their ideas to the little ones unable to look at them critically.
They didn't ban it, Einstein. The internet isn't just for posting your ignorance. Try doing some actual research for a change. It was CHALLENGED, not banned.
Bacon, in Florida it amounts to the same thing. If it’s challenged, it comes off the shelf. The review process is so far behind that the book is effectively banned.
Book burning today makes no sense given that the practice originates from when it was really labor-intensive to make a single book, and thus burning a copy of it did actually take a hit on its influence.
So true.. and we have the internet now, so often times you can find whatever you want to read one way or another. Kids these days are smart because of technology and if you tell them they can't do something, guess what? Conservatives are all about the culture war, so buring books is likely just a symbolic gesture at this point.
There is no modern book burning. Just books being removed from curriculum in schools. Like someone else stated, ALL of these books can be picked up at the local public library. The entire premise of this video is Misleading and dishonest.
@@TheSeahawk206 So the part of the video that showed literal book burning is misleading? Do your eyes deceive you? Also the premise wasn't book burning or removal from all libraries. It was explicitly about schools. You are dishonest.
Banning books is ignorant and fearful parents making sure their children grow up even more ignorant, fearful and uninformed about the world they live in! Sad, just sad...
Who supports banning books? Parents who don't care about their kids ending up just as ignorant as they are and who don't want their kids asking questions or having conversations. Pretty confident that the people supporting book bans have never read even one of them. Schools need to stop catering to hysterical immature adults.
In a way, it may be a good thing for some of them. When their kids realize their parents lied to them, they will resent their parenting and do it differently for their children hopefully. I think any logical person can see that banning books doesn’t work. It never has and never will
Not every book ban is the same. Some books should absolutely be banned IMO. Some of the books mentioned are classics and I don't understand why they would remain banned, if they still are. I saw a RUclips video that cited examples of why a specific math textbook was banned. Math problems were bringing up racial bias and racism. Is that really appropriate or necessary for a math book?? No.
According to the video 85% of Americans think books should not be banned. There are dozens of laws that now ban books. How can you say we have a functioning democracy? This is a per se indictment of our system in the United States on both the federal and state level.
Are you guys just being disingenuous? Most of these books are not banned just removed from public school curriculums.. kids can go to a library or buy the books. Short answer.. yes you’re all being disingenuous.

I'd look up books that were banned in other countries, or that used to be banned (didn't cross my mind that books are still being banned in 2022). I even got a hold of Mein Kampf someway, which is the only book that was still banned in my country. I never finished it, because it's pretty gross, but I wanted it because I couldn't have it. What is so startling about the notion of Banning books is how it can result in psychological reactance. For example the very fact that Roberts Greens book "The 48 laws of power "is banned by the Utah state prison made me get a copy to read.

Any book banned deserves to be read by everyone. Best part about "book bans" and burning books? ... Ummm Gen Z has grown up with portable libraries i.e phones... What does burning physical copies do when most information consumed today is digital? Nothing. It only increases notoriety of the book.
burning books may not hold much weight logically anymore, but it still carries a pretty large emotional and symbolic load. all throughout history before the internet was even conceived, all humans had were books, and people burning them meant they were being destroyed en masse for incredibly diabolical reasons like religious bigotry or culture obliteration, and those books would be gone for good never to be heard of again. that's why it's still a popular practice for radical protests, because there's serious meaning behind it.
Learning about history should be uncomfortable but that helps us learn and become better people. Similarly, we should be able to have critical discussions in the classroom about current events - it helps kids think critically about the world and encourages discussion. When I was in high school, we always held discussions about current events. Once, we had a seminar where everyone talked about their views on the war and gay marriage. It was great. Shielding kids from that is terrible. And even more so when you realize the same people banning reality want everyone to carry AR-15s everywhere they go. Absurd.
Well if these books are so horrible then they should ban the Bible as well. And I'm saying this as a Christian. The Bible talks about life - and life isn't always beautiful and clean. The less books about life we have the less of an understanding of life we have. Banning books won't make reality easier but it will make it harder to handle reality when it one day comes knocking at our door
@George Jones if they do its only in the south, and its actually against federal policy. youre not supposed to teach religion in public schools. private schools can, but not public.
If it’s educational and it’s not being forced I don’t care what my kid wants to read, if she wants to educate herself about something then she is free to do so. The people that want the books banned were never given the freedom to learn, they were probably sheltered and taught that they’re going to go to hell for anything that’s not considered “Christian” and in some households that basically means anything fun.
When I was a kid, I recall very few other kids even caring about books at all. To prove it, each book had a nameless checkout card within to show that they didn't. So fast forward to today and I would be surprised if these banned books had one or two kids willing to pry themselves away from the computer to read one of them. I don't believe that we should ban any books but in the end, very few kids will be affected regardless of what we do.
Despite the surface level damages/results of banning certain books being negligible, the fact that these small groups people can make these rules up to restrict the lives of the rest of us is pretty... alarming? Scary? I mean just think these are your nearest Karens and Kyles affecting our lives like they are the prison guards or something
I read a banned book three times: Some Boys, The Kite Runner, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Some Boys was about a girl who was r*ped in a school where no one believes her, The Kite Runner is about an Afghan boy living during the war in his country, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower is about a book-loving introvert going through high school. All were very insightful and raw. I loved them.
Reading books doesn't stop people from trying to ban them. There is an old news segment about a Texas parent who got riled up about the Fahrenheit 451 and wanted it banned even after he read it! Best part was that he objected how it treated Christianity! Remember that the protagonist of the book memorises part of the Bible in the end!
I think he found it offensive because there was one part of the book where the protagonist was ripping pages out of the Bible. Although, he didn't even know what the Bible was. Plus the way he did it wasn't out of disrespect for any religion
From an European perspective, everything currently newsworthy in the US is completely distopian. Some coastal states (California, Washington state, New York...) seem to be the last stand before Idiocracy / The Handmaids Tale begins. It's horribly fascinating.

California is literally one of the worst states for banning books. Half of California schools have banned mark twain books because they have the n word in them so STFU European and stay in your lane
So banning teaching and books somehow doesn’t violate freedom of expression and speech? How is this constitutional? Who is bribing the government in this?
These books are still available in your local library...if a parent wants their child to read something then it's available. Keeping certain books out of school libraries is controlling content deemed age appropriate NOT banning it... it's still available at your local library.
Leftists do. Conservatives don't want oversexualisation of children, which is an actual problem since sex har been creeping lower and lower in age for each year. There is a time for everything and children have the right to not have to be bothered by those things until it starts closing in for the time of their sexual debutes.
I heard one old lady submitted a list of 45 books to be banned but it turns she had not read most of those books and she had no kids. She just wanted to be politically correct. Republicans have been crying about cancel culture but they have outdone the perpetrators of the cancel culture. Some on the left are also trying to change the wording classical books where they want the books to sound like they were written in 2020s by replacing words like “fat person” with “heavy person” which is equally outrageous. Books are books, they represent diversity in opinions which is key to human progress and civilization. If you find something offensive in a book, you have every right stop reading it. No one will force you. That is a free advice for both crazies on either side of the political spectrum.
Funny how frees speech and 1st amendment rights are thrown out the window when it comes to black people, women, and queer authors. 🙄 And they call us the snowflakes.
I once had a mom yell at me personally for a book she felt was totally inappropriate for High school. She claimed it was radical and un-American and the author was "probably a liberal pervert" and how dare we ask her child to read it . The book this mother felt was completely un-American was Common Sense by Thomas Paine. I agreed that it was radical for its time as it encouraged the 13 colonies to leave British rule and influenced the Declaration of Independence. She said she would pray for my soul and walked away before I finished talking.

Ya know I don’t even understand the “I don’t want my kids to learn about sex in middle school” type argument. In my district there was a whole science/health unit about sex, diseases that can be passed through having sex, consent, safe sex, and protocols you can take of ever you were to get pregnant. I understand their concern if it was talked about in a book instead of in a classroom, but kids NEED to learn about this, or else there will be a lot of young adults out there oblivious to some of the consequences that can come out of it
SOME BOOKS ACTUALLY DO NEED TO BE WITHHELD FROM MINORS. I’M NOT SAYING THAT THEY SHOULD BE BURNED, BUT SOME SHOULD BE CONSIDERED ADULT MATERIAL AND NOT FIT FOR SCOOL LIBRARIES.
I live in California, we have the opposite problems of other states...my extremely liberal teacher managed to get "gone with the wind" banned, ironically it made everyone read the book and frankly it is one of the best books ive ever read. Thanks teach!
I have read GWTW several times. One of my favorite books! And the book could easily be part of a discussion on how certain views on race were acceptable within the context of the time they were written and how the treatment of race in literature has evolved, especially vis a vis African American authors.
I’m so glad my school isn’t really a part of this strict ban. I remember my history teachers were quite progressive and open minded. My most recent history teacher was very outspoken and was determined to teach ALL of her students about racism, sexism, gender equality, etc, along with the school’s curriculum. She always found a way to make sure she touched on every subject attaining to the subjects learned in class-how colonization hurt the POCs already living there, how women in the past and even today were more likely to not be seen as valuable compared to their male counterparts, how POCs are often looked over in numerous heroic stories of our white counterparts. Seeing this type of ban really saddens me, as a women of color and as someone who identifies with the LGBTQ+ community. Most of the time we’re just blinding our students from very valuable information.
Instead of banning books, maybe parent your kids better. Pay attention to what your kids are doing and educate them according to what you value most. Don't take things away from other people because you're homophobic or racist.
Both of the schools I've been to here in Australia have had atleast one trans story written by a trans author in their libraries, and I'm thankful for that.
Instead of listening to these parents who are calling for a ban on these books we should be solely listening to the teachers and the students to get their view on what should be banned. The problems that generation will face when they leave school will never be solved if they don't learn about them in school and have those discussions of race and sexuality in a productive and appropriate manner. The parents are having way too much influence over how and what the children are taught and that should have no place in the classroom. If they want to ban their children from reading certain books then fine so long as that ban is focused at home and not in school.
I guess it takes some balls to accept what has happened in past was wrong and we must tell younger generation about this as we don't want to repeat same mistake in future
As a parent who has given their children multiple KKK books, mein kampf and pornographic books i agree, tho one of my sons seems to be starting to act like a nazi... who knew political indoctrination trought books could do that
Conservatives are the ones promoting freedom of speech in general these days, while the leftists want to censor ideas that don't support their world view. Funny that.
Properly educated children would be able to determine what is right and wrong information. It should not be the jobs of parents and adults to limit and control their freedom for information. They should instead strive to give proper tools for children to understand and evaluate the information.
The point is to stop teachers from teaching them. It is to stop making kids learn to critically think and question what their authoritarian parents and by extension an authroitarian government asks of them.
I find it deplorable that some organised parents and schools in the US find it worthwhile to ransack, pick-out and ban books from a school library, under the banner of "parental rights", yet those very same parents would not show half the angst, when children are murdered in school, in the very same school districts... But, the US has been here before when public school segregation was enforced, and black students had to walk past a picket of the same families who were then intimidating, scratching, hurling racial slurs and spitting at them, just for daring to attend the same schools as them---this current strategy is NO DIFFERENT, the intent is still the same....
It’s not like people can’t buy the book or have it in their homes. There’s also always the community that can vote out the school council over things like this.
I mean I can't lie banning the great Gatsby is fine with me, such an overrated pos, but in all seriousness, the Nazis banned and burned books, is that who we as a country want to emulate
Unfortunately it appears a good portion of Americans now think authoritarianism is the way to go, all while screaming their rights are being violated! These foolish people haven't got a clue, because authoritarianism is basically the absence of public and personal rights and freedoms.
Remember Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix? When Umbridge banned the magazine that contained Harry's interview about what really happened during the Triwizard Tournament? Hermione was glowing because she knew that what by forbidding it, everyone will want to read it. And that's exactly what happened
I just don’t understand why parents get so fed up about certain topics in schools. Like, if your kid is in public school, they are gonna know all the sweaf words and all the porn/sexual phrases even if the books are banned. That’s just common sense. What parents can do is interact with their kids learning, make them understand the parent’s beliefs, without enforcing their opinion on the masses. I think that statistic, that more than 80% of Americans don’t think books should be banned, is very accurate for the average Americans. Even if I think something inappropriate in a book, I wouldn’t want it banned. I simply would want to explain to my kid that I feel that portion of the book is wrong and that they shouldn’t replicate that. I think that is an easy solution to this problem.
Ban all the books you want in schools. There are hundreds of thousands of fantastic books out there. Most important thing is to open the door to the joy of reading. I found that on my own as an adult. I wish it’d been shown to me as a kid because I wasted almost 30 years without that excitement, fear, love, adoration, laughter, hatred, shock, despair, hunger, thankfulness, safety and on and on and on.
Total gaslighting. Notice they showed exact figures for books banned for race or orientation issues, but completely avoided telling us how many were banned for being sexually explicit and/or obscene. They're afraid to tell the truth.
The number is 19% for books banned regarding sexual bans, which is actually smaller than that given how book banning groups classify a "pornographic" book (babies everywhere book and instances of books in which individuals are sexually assaulted which aren't pornographic by any means.) I think most people against book banning wouldn't have a problem with banning books from school libraries if they were banned for being pornographic or just overtly sexual, but the other, more larger instances of books being banned are being banned because they disagree with the values presented, which even at regulated level of schools, shouldn't be enough reason for an outright ban
And you don’t think democrats do the same thing sometimes? I have some liberal ideas but most democrats behave the same way. They all play in the same ball game
THEY DID WHAT TO “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark?!” BEST LIBARY BOOK EVER! It was ALWAYS signed out and the kids would gather around the kid that’s currently reading it. "The Great Gatsby" is a wonderful book. It's hard to understand how this book is banned.
I think cuz of the race remarks from tom in the book .
I read the book and it was a great read.
The legality of something has very little to do with its quality. For years a the average American actually believed that because cannabis was illegal it must be "bad". The claim against The Great Gatsby was "obscenity". It's important to separate value judgments from the legal status of anything.
...Anyway, it's not banned. They just listed it as a title Jerry Falwell led a charge against. I'm not clear on whether they were successful and what state(s) it pertained to, but well after that the book was required reading for me in high school.
@@user-em4el6rf5v fr makes no sense. Tom is portrayed in a negative light so his negative comments aren’t enthused. People need to learn about history in order not to repeat it. His remarks are supposed to be horrifying, not inspiring.

Most of these kids can not freely acces the internet
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”. People should learn from this.
Except it isn't entirely true since words can, indeed, hurt. Kids that're abused at school wouldn't take their own lives if they didn't.
Banning classics like The Great Gatsby is so wrong. Only a matter of time till Fahrenheit 451 goes as well.
I believe Fahrenheit 451 on the banned list at some schools. Oh, the irony!
So banning teaching and books somehow doesn’t violate freedom of expression and speech? How is this constitutional? Who is bribing the government in this?
So banning books somehow doesn't violate freedom of expression and speech. Then the first book the should be banned is the Bible.
Thanks for this, knowing what they want banned informs me of what I should have my kid read at home.
Ironic, we read Fahrenheit 451 in school and now the book became the reality
True
“The books that the world calls immoral are the ones that show the world its own shame.” - Oscar Wilde. Read it again.
People care more about banning books than guns
I’d make a ‘Fahrenheit 451’ joke but the book is probably ironically enough banned.
These books are still available in your local library...if a parent wants their child to read something then it's available. Keeping certain books out of school libraries is controlling content deemed age appropriate NOT banning it... it's still available at your local library.
Wrong. Republicans are also banning books from public libraries.
I thought conservatives didn’t believe in “cancel culture” 😂😂😂
Leftists do. Conservatives don't want oversexualisation of children, which is an actual problem since sex har been creeping lower and lower in age for each year. There is a time for everything and children have the right to not have to be bothered by those things until it starts closing in for the time of their sexual debutes.
@@Quimper111 "no u"
Books like gender queer as sex sence in detail in the book which was found in a middle school library

I can't imagine my childhood without "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark vol. I,II, III". That and "Tailipo". They read us that in grade one.
Tailipo is what it's called? I've been looking for it for years
Funny how frees speech and 1st amendment rights are thrown out the window when it comes to black people, women, and queer authors.

Definitely an interesting read as a period piece since its views on race are antiquated.
@@Lichenroc Yes there are parts of the book where the N word is used liberally and this made me reel several times
Yo the Great Gatsby was the one book I actually liked in school 😂
Omg same
Same, way better than Romeo and Juliet and that crap.
100% agree bros
If parents don’t want their kids reading books…..there’s something seriously wrong with those parents…..
As a parent who has given their children multiple KKK books, mein kampf and pornographic books i agree, tho one of my sons seems to be starting to act like a nazi... who knew political indoctrination trought books could do that

Liberals: ban all books that paint America in a good light
Conservatives: ban all books that paint America in a negative light
False but if it makes you feel better go off.
Remember all of this next time a prominent conservative tells you they give a flying heck about free speech
Just because some conservatives support this, doesn't mean all conservatives support this.
Conservatives are the ones promoting freedom of speech in general these days, while the leftists want to censor ideas that don't support their world view. Funny that.
Don't know if anyone has heard this. All of Roald Dahl's books will have words like: FAT, UGLY & CRAZY removed. As well as: HE, SHE, BOY, GIRL,
Hell yeah!
Determining appropriate audience is not banning. A book is not banned if it can be bought on Amazon.
Properly educated children would be able to determine what is right and wrong information. It should not be the jobs of parents and adults to limit and control their freedom for information. They should instead strive to give proper tools for children to understand and evaluate the information.
no point of banning books when there is the internet lmao.
The point is to stop teachers from teaching them. It is to stop making kids learn to critically think and question what their authoritarian parents and by extension an authroitarian government asks of them.
@@cooltwittertag how is the schools gonna enforce it? send auditors to check up on the teachers? that'd cost even more money.
I'm confused. If America is the land of the free, why does it ban books, a symbol of freedom?
I find it deplorable that some organised parents and schools in the US find it worthwhile to ransack, pick-out and ban books from a school library, under the banner of "parental rights", yet those very same parents would not show half the angst, when children are murdered in school, in the very same school districts...
But, the US has been here before when public school segregation was enforced, and black students had to walk past a picket of the same families who were then intimidating, scratching, hurling racial slurs and spitting at them, just for daring to attend the same schools as them---this current strategy is NO DIFFERENT, the intent is still the same....
Also, you can bet those parents calling for the ban of certain books in school libraries have never read those books!
It’s not like people can’t buy the book or have it in their homes. There’s also always the community that can vote out the school council over things like this.
hence why it isnt an actual ban
The land of freedom my ass.

*any school, I went to both and it’s not like the kids act any differently lol.
Then why are you saying go ahead and ban them if you wish they hadn't?
Yea and ban all the books they want cuz everything is on the internet and more entertaining
This is just sad..plain and simple.
