A deep dive into Fiona's music is highly recommended. I think she is the Joni Mitchell of her generation. A true artist.

It’s the most acclaimed album of the year for a reason. It is an odd, raw but entrancing blend of blues, jazz and punk. Also, great storytelling and surprising sonic choices. “Shameika” is one of the standout tracks, but the whole thing needs to be experienced.

Very good choice Justin! Fiona Apple has been a very interesting artist since "Tidal" (memorable album for a 18 years old new singer songwriter!). From this album, you should also listen to the title track ("Fetch The Bolt Cutters") which has a reference to "Running Up That Hill"-and maybe "Hounds of Love" at the end- by Kate Bush she admires and could be compared to in some ways (Fiona is more neurotic, paranoid and a bit "me me me" than KB though). I absolutely LOVE her album "Extraordinary Machine" in the first version produced by Jon Brion, not the official one that was released. You should also react to the title track of this album too ("Extraordinary Machine") which is very different from what happens on "Fetch the Bolt Cutters". Great song which was officially released in it's original production (Jon Brion). Go for Fiona Justin, you won't be disapointed. Cheers!

Scary start there, Justin! Hello from Dave in a rainy London. Thanks for coming around to Fiona Apple. Don't know her newer stuff, but I have her earlier CDs Tidal and Extraordinary Machine. There's a theatrical quality to her songs and performances (saw her live back in the 90s; she was mesmerising). My favourite track is definitely Sleep to Dream. Interesting you talked about her complicated rhythms and unique phrasing; she certainly had that in her earlier material too. A complicated and troubled life too, judging by her lyrics. The musical structure of Shameika sounds a little like Zappa to me. Another singer in the same vein is the wonderful Anouk from Holland; I travelled to Amsterdam to see her live a couple of years back. Recommended track: For Bitter or Worse.

I LOVE Fiona! When the Pawn... is probably her best but they’re all great. Her debut is the most straight forward, instrumental-wise. After that she’s gotten more Tom Waits-like. I saw her live in Atlantic City years ago with Elvis Costello and others and it was incredible. Much of that show can be seen on RUclips. Check her out singing Elvis’s Shabby Doll and I Want You. Took me a while to get but once I got it, it was cool. Probably like it more later after a few more listens. Wouldn’t sound out of place with wilder Tom Waits, Primus, Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson etc.
I taught after school style art classes for a couple years. My father taught art and always told me to get into teaching but, I’m not that patient. It takes a special person to hang in there all year, for many years. Bless them. One group I taught regularly were in an apartment complex, typically not well to do. I really enjoyed teaching them and wanted them to know they were as good as anybody, especially as good as my other more well do classes. Miss that bunch.
Take care everyone, mask up for yourself and others,
    Peace and potential Music

Nice intro JP. Re the song, it's my first listen, In fact, never heard of her before. First impression, not sure what to make of it. 2nd listen either. The drums, bass, and piano were o.k. All the extraneous sounds, distracting, I think the song would've worked better without. Her voice also hard to judge. More rap-light, and narration than singing. I didn't hate it, but i'm not left craving to hear more. I might though, out of curiosity.See what else she's got.
F.A update, just listened to 'Tidal'. Good album, first half particularly strong. Good voice too, though doesn't show a lot of range on that album. May listen to some more. Still not crazy about this though.

I saw recently that another reactor just discovered Jewel, who always has been a bit overlooked, although she is a lot more conventional of an artist. But a lot of these women from an earlier era were brilliant lyricists, musicians, vocalists and in some cases such as Kate and Tori, also brilliant producers. I look forward to witnessing more people hear some great artists for the first time and hopefully appreciate them enough to keep on listening on their own time.

Usually when you introduce me to a new act, it is usually some band from the 70s or 80s that I missed for some reason or another. This time you have introduced me to a new act that is current. That's a good thing. Always living in the past means you are missing the present.
This song was interesting and good. I suspect the rhythm (phrasing?) that she has in common with Joni is likely based in Jazz though Joni did find her own rhythms in the oddest places (such as a cigarette dispensing machine).
I would like to hear more of Fiona.

I tried really hard to LOVE this album, but i only like a few songs - including this one. The decision to make it a really percussive heavy album makes it all sound a bit the same to me. I think all of her previous albums are amazing, and though critics hailed this one as a masterpiece - and i understand the rationale behind every argument -, for me, it's like watching Citizen Kane, checking all the boxes of why it is considered "the greatest film of all times" , and yet remaining unmoved by what you saw. After many listens, i decided i'd rather put on Extraordinary Machine or When The Pawn.... and sit this one out. Hopefully, it won't take another eight years to get a new one from her.

This is my first listen to Fiona. She became popular at a time when edgy female singer-songwriters of the "damaged goods" variety were all the rage. Having already been a fan of Marianne Faithfull I ignored most of them as upstart wannabes. Well hey, I'm awfully damned impressed here and want to hear more. TOTALLY cool! This is a matured artist in complete control of her craft. I detect goddesshood here. And by the way, this is your best ever intro. Silliness always wins!
