Some issues harm development in India 1. Caste System (Those families have large land and resources) 2. Geospatial issue which causes India splits into several economic/political sections 3. Weak central government VS powerful local government controlled by those families. Those 3 points decrease social mobility, resources gathered by few people, difficult to acquire land for development, especially infrastructure, difficult to implement national wide policy because weak central government. I am an indian I believe that one of the reasons why india is lagging behind china is the presence of too many religious people in India who are easy to be brainwashed by the politicians for their personal gains. Superstitions due to religion make people close minded and dumb making them impractical in dealing with the social problems. Just like in China, there should be a cultural revolution in india where india throw away the religions, throw away the religious politics and embrace modern science. Everyone should become atheists( 90% of Chinese and japanese are athiests) and then there is some hope for india to become a developed nation

Simply looking at GDP at 1980 is actually misleading, you need to look at HDI of China at 1980 to see why China became successful, China's life expectancy, literacy rates, female labor participation rate etc... were all much higher than India at the time. That base allowed China to develop with its market reforms. Even in 2022, India still has a poor overall HDI.

The reason for the massive divide is simple. Two reasons one:governance and two:infrastructure not so much to do with democracy vs a one party state.
