    We had that loco on (then NIWX 8924) the Eastern Washington Gateway RR from 2007 until 8/9/2012 when she was retired. I put 2,296 miles on her as my leader plus many more when she was in the consist. Not bad for a part-time employee on a 109 mile long RR! 8924 was always reliable and never failed us. I was beyond happy to see her saved and restored as CRR 3632. I got to see her in 2019 at Oak Ridge TN and it was an emotional time for me.

    Man that hunt for an idle is probably one
    Of my all time favorite sounds

    • @Trains-With-Shane
      @Trains-With-Shane Год назад +6

      Yeah the governor always makes the big 2-strokes fun on cold starts. That cool sound is amplified by the turbocharger in this case. Such a great mechanical noise. Same with the smaller Detroit diesels they like to hunt around a bit on cold starts as well. No coincidence that they're related to the big EMD's.

    That SD45 is awesome, but holy crap those horn valve skills! DANG!! At first I was like "Ugh, a K5LA on an F-unit, 🙄" but that quilling totally made up for it and then some. That was hot!

      Southern Appalachia Railway Museum in Eastern Tennessee. They got the good stuff. Another note, when I last saw the F unit, they had a Leslie 5 chime of some sort on it.

    Pull Cord on the F unit. Perfect for "feathering" the horns. You can feather on the second generation EMD, GE, ALCo locomotives. But nothing beats the pull cord!!!!!!

    • @JoshJonesFitness
      @JoshJonesFitness 2 года назад +4

      The pull cords are THE best for horn blowing. I thought it was pretty cool that Amtrak decided to use the pull cord on the AEM-7s.

    Is this one of the SD45's that was rebuilt with a V16 645? Or does it still use the V20 645?
    Many SD45's in service were rebuilt with different prime movers because the V20 verison had too much longitudinal weight as a engine block and were notorious for either causing damage to crankshafts or bending the frames over time and usage.
    Some of them also destroyed piston rods or bearings if they were ran at full throttle for a long time or were put on hard use for serious work.
    The amount that were rebuilds were technically rebuilt to SD40 standards.
