Trommel/compost sifter/ mulch sifter

- I used an old treadmill motor, bike rims, and chicken wire to create this rotating dirt sifter for a hugelkultur. I plan to make saw horses especially for this frame so that the angle of the tremble is between 5%-10% slope, I found that placing the saw horses on a sheet of Ply wood gives for a sound footing, also easier to shovel the dirt out, or mulch. I will post the build of the second tube, this one is 1/8 inch mesh wire on top of 6 foot long chicken fence, the second tube will have 1/4 inch mesh for mulch.
Well.... interesting. I've been viewing these kinds of machines to see if I can find one that would be worthwhile for me to build. So far ---- none.
I have leaves and grass cutting from two 50x100 foot lots, and have three compost piles to accumulate and age that material. So far, I just have two repurposed screens, one with 1" holes and the other 1/4" holes. I just shovel compost into it and use m uscle power to sift out that which needs to go back into the recently filled pile and that I can use in the vegetable garden.
That takes some work, but at age 73 I do it for ten minutes at a time or so and then come back to it when convenient.
Simple and meets my needs at this point. I don't need more.
Where did you find a large enough belt that would work with the treadmill motor? I to am using a treadmill motor on mine but had to rig up a v-belt to work, because I couldn't locate a large belt that would work on the treadmill pulley. Thanks!
ScanMan79 We actually used a timing belt from the autoparts store. They come in all different sizes and are very durable. We actually got one too big for the first try, so we returned it to get something tighter --- so remember to keep the receipt.
Try a nylon bushing at your bearing areas, much less squeekage!
It's going too fast now, WHY would you think about making it go faster? 25 to 30 R.P.M. is customary for those things.
From what I've read the target speed for typical bike tires (26" type with an inside diameter of about 21" (0.53m) is about 23 RPM I'm hoping to hit close to that mark for the Trommel I'm building.
I agree more speed is the last thing they need they will just get Centrifuging resulting in a lower screening efficiency.
Why do american shovels have so short stems?
maerk1 We have long handled shovels too, just some people prefer the short ones with D handles.
Different length handles for different jobs. I think this style was originally developed for working on a specific task of some type. I think this is called a grain scoop, or a grain and coal scoop.
