Family Team Mills Long Oak Log

  • This is the contrasting Oak log for the Walnut log in the last video, for the gentleman that makes beautiful inlaid crosses.
    Long logs over 13 feet are challenging to run through the edger, as they pose a risk of hitting equipment control panels at either end of the edger. In addition, these boards were tapered, so we opted not to edge them, that will give the customer more yield from his log.

    I posted a comment on an older video (2014 I believe) regarding the lighting in the building not giving a thought to the fact you had put up a new Morton building. By the date of this video I suspect that this is in your new building. As I watch your videos I like to look at the overall lighting and it still looks like you're not getting light down to usable levels. As I watch you standing over by the overhead door and seeing the light coming thru the windows that is natural sunlight which is what you could be using with 5000 K LED lighting. Some it takes a couple days to get used to but there are health aspects to it. Really enjoy your videos.

    Linda: If the grey cabinet in the corner has a phase converter in it, I would bet that that is the problem with soft focus on the camera. Other than checking for loose connections try moving the camera a foot or two further away from that box. (assuming that there is nothing similar on the other side of the wall)Really enjoy your videos,Rick

    • @LindasSawmillCinema
      @LindasSawmillCinema  7 лет назад

      Yes, we have narrowed it down to the phase converter and it has permanently damaged the oldest of my 3 cameras, but affects all 3. So I have been recording farther away, for now. Thanks for the feedback, help, and watching! Linda

    I always enjoy your videos. The different camera shots make it really nice. I think you are built just right! My wife is 5' 2" @ 120#. I'm 6' 3" @250#. I think you do a great job at lifting and moving with the heavy weight. A person needs to learn what they can comfortably do and just keep at it at a steady pace. Try an RF filter in your power connections. The blurring can occur due to electrical pulses as machines are switched on and off . RF filters should deal with this.

    • @LindasSawmillCinema
      @LindasSawmillCinema  7 лет назад

      Thank you for the suggestion. Since the problem came on slowly over several months to a year, we think some connections may have loosened over time. Yes thats funny some people would like any possible chance to sit down or operate the fork lift, take a pre-brake brake and a post-brake brake but ive learned over time first like you said busy is happy and second if you fight the clock the you always lose. People at work call me crazy because I prefer to work thru lunch then ask why I'm not always looking at my watch all day except for every five minutes when they ask me the time. Now my boss doesn't mind and I can't always get paid for my lunches but working 5 10's in a saw shop that produces thin rock vinear, mantels, hearths and related masonry mateirals anything to make the day go by faster is a plus!

    The Vixia uses a through-the-lens autofocus system that adjusts the focus based on the overall sharpness of the image; maybe high frequency vibration of the saw when it is in the cut confuses the camera's sharpness detecting algorithm.

    there is a lot of dust generated in cutting wood. The old dust collector was probably getting a little overwhelmed. that can happen. I just got done planing some wood and I filled up two 6 gallon buckets in just what I did, imagine what you generate?

    Just a thought.. If you were to get some Ferro-magnetic shields and place a few of them on your power lines to both your edger , mill, and cameras... you would loose that interference... It like what we have to do to decrease RF interference when using ham radios....

  • @ThoenWorks

    Yes - Enjoyed! :-) Wish there was a good efficient and "automatic" method of cleaning sawdust off the boards after they come off the mill. Always seems kinda time consuming to me.

    • @LindasSawmillCinema
      @LindasSawmillCinema  7 лет назад

      The mill off-bearer usually taps the boards on the mill bed. On this log, we were in the way of mill progress, so there wasn't time to tap the boards. Routinely, there can be a small amount of dust that sticks to the boards, so we normally scrape, but it is on the go and not nearly as much. Thanks for watching! Linda

    Great stuff. If that was my camera and mill I would be looking in the electrical panel in the corner for loose or hot connections. Many times when a connection gets bad and heavily loaded it will throw out EMI (electromagnetic interference). The camera is pretty close, that could explain why all 3 cameras goof up in that spot. Might be easy to see, look for a heat discolored connection or a breaker that heats up. Might not be easy to spot and it could take an experienced pro to find it. Could be a ground fault in the saw motor too. I would be looking closely as it could get expensive. Make a video of what you find. Keep them coming! :{)

    • @LindasSawmillCinema
      @LindasSawmillCinema  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you! Since the problem gradually came about, I really believe you, and several other viewers who had the same idea, are on to something. • @headinsouth1
    @headinsouth1 7 лет назад

    The electrical shielding sounds like a good idea. It's a shot in the dark but the issue might be coming from the spinning saw blade itself. Functioning sort of like a Van de Graff generator producing high voltage DC at low current levels. Typically a rubber belt but who knows what that spinning blade is doing in the electrical realm. Do you get that focus issue from the same position when the saw is off?

  • @winstonsmith565
    @winstonsmith565 6 лет назад

    You may be happier when you're busy, Linda, but your back needs a rest sometimes. Trust me on this - I was a nurse for thirty years and because I used alternative methods for lifting, etc, I'm the only one in our class of 25 who hasn't got a bad back. that forklift has more horsepower than you have!

  • @dougcross800
    @dougcross800 7 лет назад

    great videos.
    are you sure the blur is not simply vibration? you see the blur begins when the blade engages the wood and corrects once it's done. it looks like you've fixed the camera to the wall. perhaps if you hung the camera via a support in the ceiling. i don't agree that it could be an electrical issue.

  • @olivier2553
    @olivier2553 7 лет назад +1

    The blur seems something to do with the autofocus: when the saw is completely back toward the camera, there is a sharp focus on the motor. Dust on the autofocus LED?

    • @LindasSawmillCinema
      @LindasSawmillCinema  7 лет назад

      The blur is only when the mill is under load. As soon as it breaks out of the cut, the focus is fine. It is easier to tell when you watch the raw video, though, as I cut a bunch of the blurry sections out. Thanks for watching! Linda

    Just a quick thought on the camera issue, did you think about resonant frequency vibration ?. Try a glass window between the saw and the camera. It may just be a mechanical component in the camera vibrating at it's native frequency and it's not doing it when not cutting since the speed drops slightly when you start the cut.

    • @LindasSawmillCinema
      @LindasSawmillCinema  7 лет назад

      Interesting idea, I haven't heard of the glass solution. I have had several good ideas we may try. Since the problem came on slowly over several months to a year, we think some connections may have loosened over time. That is the first thing we will be looking for. If we don't find anything, we may have to try other ideas, so I appreciate your input. Thanks for watching! Linda

    Was the wood being cut seasoned wood. I ask this question because of the way you stacked the wood? You stacked the wood directly on the to of each new cut piece of wood coming from the saw mill. In most case if it is green lumber being cut it is customary to add at least a 1/2" spacer between cut pieces of material being stacked. This allows the air to evenly flow in and around the stacked cuts of lumber to assist in the drying time of the material?

    • @LindasSawmillCinema
      @LindasSawmillCinema  7 лет назад

      The logs were green, not seasoned. Sticking on the go slows production too much. We normally stack lumber on sticks for drying, after we finish sawing it. This video link will take you to my video of us putting lumber on sticks to prepare for drying. ruclips.net/video/hjVqR9MBVHU/видео.html
      Wood in log form takes decades to dry and many times it will rot first. It doesn't really dry at all until the bark has fallen off. Then, it dries the outer layers, while the center stays green, which causes deep cracks to form. It is ALWAYS better to saw fresh cut logs.

      The mill is rated for up to 36 inches, but that is the absolute biggest part of the log. The throat is actually 24" wide. I am glad to have another video to share! Thanks for watching! Linda

    You clean every board from dust on the stack.. But why not turn the board upside down, when you moving it to the stack?

    • @LindasSawmillCinema
      @LindasSawmillCinema  7 лет назад

      Simply turning the board over doesn't remove all the dust, it is damp and sticks to the boards. Good question, though. Thanks for watching! Linda

  • @bardigan1
    @bardigan1 7 лет назад +1

    Great video. Question though... why don't you just flip the boards when stacking, instead of the extra step of sweeping?

    • @LindasSawmillCinema
      @LindasSawmillCinema  7 лет назад

      Thank you! When the boards are less than 14 feet they go up the roller track to the edger, the offbearer has time to tap the board on the mill. When there is an offbearer at each end of the mill, the sawyer has to wait for the board to be pulled away, so we don't take the time to tap it. Though, even when it is tapped, sometimes the dust sticks to the board and can only be removed with a scraper. So one of us scrapes it on the roller track as we transport it along. The scraper is a recyled cut off section from one of our old bandsaw blades. Thanks for watching. Linda

    Linda:
    Thank you for another video. Have you ever milled salvaged logs, for example from a forest fire? Or would they be too difficult to deal with? Reason I ask is that I had some wood from Mt. St. Helens (a few years after the volcano blew) and the wood was rather poor, somewhat brittle with occasional insect damage. Just wondering, as I've heard the Federal government may open up fire damaged lands for logging.

    • @LindasSawmillCinema
      @LindasSawmillCinema  7 лет назад

      Yes, we occasionally get a log that someone tried to burn with a brush pile and either they or someone else decides it might make nice furniture, so it ends up here. Ten to fifteen years ago, we resawed salvaged beams from a 120 year old apartment building that burned. They were huge Douglas Fir beams and had lots of beautiful lumber.
      Depending on how long the log was in the fire and how big the log is, it can have a lot of useable lumber or very dried out and cracked. The charcoal is abrasive and reduces blade life, but is worth it if you get a fair amount of lumber. Thank for watching! Linda

    Probably not electronic interference ..its more likely vibrational harmonics with the place the camera mount is located. Try changing the mounting material/method to try avoiding harmonic vibrations.

    Linda, is there a reason why this cutting left so much saw dust on the wood when you stacked it. in all your other videos, i have never seen anyone clean the boards when they were stacked. does going through the edger clean off the boards at all. thanks

    • @LindasSawmillCinema
      @LindasSawmillCinema  7 лет назад

      Good question. A couple of things were going on. 1.Wider boards have more dust remain on the board, because there is so much volume that the blade can't clear it out fast enough. 2.The mill off-bearer usually taps the boards on the mill bed. On this log, we were in the way of mill progress, so there wasn't time to tap the boards. Routinely, there can be a small amount of dust that sticks to the boards, so we normally scrape, but it is on the go and not nearly as much. The edger dislodges some, but not all. Thanks for watching! Linda

    Who grades the lumber after milling? What was that log going to be used for by the customer?

    • @LindasSawmillCinema
      @LindasSawmillCinema  7 лет назад +1

      This log belonged to a customer who wanted it milled for his own use, no grading necessary. When we need to grade lumber, we wait until we have a semi load ready and hire an independent grader. Thanks for watching. Linda
