- It's a knee injury which can put an athlete out of action for up to a year - including dozens of elite players who've been forced to miss out on the Women's World Cup.

In fact women are far more likely to be affected by ligament injuries than men, but experts still don't understand why.
It's led to renewed calls for more research - to find out what could help to reduce the risk.

This is the injury that finished Clough in the 1960s and more or less did for Gascogne in 1991. Science can be slow, let alone when mixed with sexist reluctance to support women’s sport.
