- Governor Gavin Newsom announced a special session this December to impose a windfall profits tax on oil companies.
This comes as the gap between California's gas prices and the rest of the United States has never been larger.
That gap between the national average of $3.89 and California's average of $6.39 means we are now paying $2.50 per gallon more here in the Golden State.

That's his answer... just tax some more. Throw in the fact that California is severely lacking in enough refining capacity, then throw in the fact that they pay nearly $1.50 more per gallon just to cover their own outrageous high taxes, green taxes, etc. California, you did it to yourselves... not the energy companies.
$1.35 per gallon gas tax in CA. I get 18 miles per gallon on California gas. Cost $4.79 per gallon in CA. I filled up in Carson city Nevada for $4.15 per gallon and got 25 miles per gallon. 7 miles per gallon better gas mileage on Nevada gas. For a 30 gallon fill-up I can get an extra 210 miles range on Nevada gas. For the same range on CA. gas I would need another 11.6 gallons of CA gas costing $55.56. The CA gas tax would be $15.56 on that amount of gas. California government is raping the citizens by imposing these onerous taxes and fees on the gas we buy not to mention all of the other fees and taxes we pay for our governments largess and their greedy shenanigan's. Let's kick them out and elect people who truly want to help the citizens of California and not just rip us off.
My biggest problem here is that our taxes are already supposed to pay for everything. The government can't just spend recklessly and then levy a new tax when they run out of money. The roads are supposed to be whatiur taxes go for. But for some reason they keep adding taxes for "roads and school". These are already supposed to be paid for. We're getting taken for a ride becuase Democrats know they can't lose in CA

An example of elections and their consequences to say the least! I am shocked and amazed at this story/media outlet for giving factual reasons of why the fuel price is well above the national average, seems very rare to inform the public of the true facts and reveal cause and effect... In my opinion they did not go into enough depth on the issue because there are several other factors that contribute to it. Trucking into California is a pain to say the least, crossing into the state requires lots of expensive compliance, then add reduced payload capacity (more regulating policies) because more weight/axles is destructive to the road system the fuel tax should maintain btw lol... hence higher trucking costs. Most would be shocked if they knew how much petroleum is a part of everyday products from tires to makeup to metal to asphalt the list is unknown to far to many (educated) people! California leaders and there great act now think later tactics also say ban combustion engines and are encouraging banning petroleum sale so I'm curious how or why oil companies would want to even want to push back let alone invest with the state that's saying we don't want your business just saying hard to feel welcome. So much more to the problem/situation tho.

When are you going to impose the milage tax on electric vehicles? How much tax is on each gallon of premium gas? Let's just say average car gets 20mpg, every 20 miles electric cars pay that same tax. Gov Gav don't forget they owe back taxes for the miles driven. If they don't pay back taxes then when we get our electric vehicles we don't have to start paying milage tax......

Let’s face it, the only reason you get hurt by this oil price is because you make less than the average, the same thing goes for chicken price, beef price, etc. the solution to fix them all is to make more than others, when you reach the top 10%, all these problems will be gone, period

He already does that. Look up the “cap” program. Oil companies have to pay out the ass to California because they “cause emissions”. They just pass that cost to the driver. The same “greedy corporations” have gas for sale in texas for $3.04/gallon right now and I just drove past a California station at $6.50/gallon for REGULAR
The problem is not the taxes, but the lack of refinery resources in California. This is why California gas prices are so high. The taxes are about $1.50 on gas that costs $6.30 per gallon. California politicians also want consumers to use less gasoline and switch to EVs, so they don't have an incentive to fix the problem.
I agree. I believe California politicians are purposely price gouging us just to get more people in the market to buy EV’s and they’re probably profiting from electric companies under the table to do so.
