musically because SY has been way more innovative in an experimental case, with their guitarplaying, weird tuning systems etc (the `branca-skool`), a higher level of charisma of each single band member imo and were a lot more present in the whole world for decades. the rest will be luck, i guess... hard to compare anyway, these two bands.
I second Markus' comment. As good as Live Skull were at what they did, Sonic Youth covered a broader range with their sound and had more good ideas, though I think Live Skull's music is far better than SY's pre-Daydream Nation material. Daydream Nation was their breakout album that is responsible for their popularity because it brought them the acclaim and attention of major labels other no wave bands couldn't get.

I was most impressed by `confusion is sex` because I am a glenn branca fan. and his influence on SY was still strongest at that time :-). i don`t care about popularity in general. popularity is of course n o t an indicator of `good` or `better` art. quality is not a measure for art anyway. it`s a term from the world of economics, of business. Art cannot be evaluated, except by personal taste, and that is subjective. in this respect, it is actually nonsense to say that the works of one artist are 'better' than those of another, instead of saying, 'i like them more' or 'they appeal to me more than others' for instance. btw LS and SY have pursued different artistic approaches anyway imo.
