Hey, Aspiring Comedians. I'm building a stand-up comedy memberships site and need your help. If you know what you want or need to learn to get better at stand-up comedy, please explain it in a comment. Then I can make a video or design a lesson that will fulfill your needs. Break a Funny Bone! GD
You beat me to it, "Professor" Dean! I'm excited about this premise, and eager to listen to this vid! This is something I've been hesitating on writing a comedy-bit about... I think I'm afraid I might just light the place up only to burn it all down, ripping-on open-micers (in general) during my own very first open-mic! I think I just may _hafta_ go there, now!
Knowledge is key my friend! Go there!!!
"...there must be a joke there." Unless you're Andy Kauffman, who proudly proclaimed he never told one.
There's always a joke there.
New fan here. Loving your step-by-step book. Thanks sir!
Hey Thanks!!! I appreciate the feedback!
I still suck at open mics because I'm still learning the craft. Still new to the game.. it is what it is.

I think people forget that it took us years to learn how to read. Most people have to take speech classes and give many speeches before they are a good speaker. People somehow think because humor is fun that it must be easy to learn but it takes as much effort for most people as any new skill.
Yes! Get that experience with the Mic as much as you can! Don't be discouraged! Now is the best time to test material online. We have an popen mic 3 days a week. You should sign up! gregdeanstandupcomedyclasses.com/open-mic-nights

Good father of stand up comedy "Sir greg dean"
So kind.
Can people learn to sing if they're tone deaf? No. So some are trying to be comedians when the foot doesnt fit the shoe, I really believe there has to be some natural gift of character, confidence and wit to begin with.
True, I don't teach talent. Yet if you investigate my stand-up comedy fundamental techniques, I believe you'll find there are a great deal of skills that can be learned and applied to one's individual sense of humor. Then when going to open mics you'll be practicing good techniques.
Good jokes produce laughter. I get that. But why is it so important to present that "single unit of humor" if there are other ways to get laughs? (Pictures, sounds and feelings.)
There is no other way to get laughs with humor than through joke structure. Why "single unit?" To make the point that all jokes, at the basic level of mechanisms, are the same. It doesn't matter what genre the jokes are expressed.
@@gregdeancomedy Hmm, no laughs through doing a great impersonation? (Robin Williams) No laughs through wild dancing? (Steve Martin). No laughs through just a simple facial expression? (Eddie Murphy) What's the "structure?" I remember once, I broke out into a 20-second rap by Mistikal. With the juxtaposition, the crowd went nuts!! Roaring laughter. IDK, I'm just confused with this teaching. In fact, I've never really liked jokes by themselves. Seems too forced.
I need that knowledge no weed and hennsey right I need to study this beautiful art stand up comedy
Knowledge drives the funny.
First of all, most open mics don’t have actual audiences and most comics, not always, are trying new material.
Standup is already extremely difficult as it is, not even proven material works every time.
Now imagine being inexperienced or not good, trying to get the two or three unsuspecting patrons in the bar on Tuesday night to give af about your material.
I’ve seen plenty of guys kill at shows and not even chuckle during their sets and think to myself this material would bomb at most open mics.
Yes, a lot of open micers are bad but the distinction needs to be made.
All the things you mentioned are true. There's so much the comedians have no choice about. Yet, the one thing they are in charge of is that what they are taking on stage to work out...are jokes. This can be learned, so when facing the many obstacles of open mics the fledgling comedians are practicing good technique. This is true for all disciplines.
You keep saying ‘make sure it’s a joke first ‘ what do you mean by that
That generally means premise, set-up and punchline.
Read my book.
