right, it stretches an itch that I wasn't even aware I had, one that seems far off, distant, but known in the depths of my being. It's definitely tapping into a part of our humanity perhaps that is directly tied to the natural world. Real ancient connection

"Heilung means healing, and it's the final message of this show. When you look through the set and the translations behind the lyrics, it's about a peaceful society being driven to war because their enemy only speaks the language of the sword. But during the conflict, their shaman/soothsayer guy reads the bones and discovers the only rune that has significance in the future is 'Ear' ... the 'Grave' or 'Death Incarnate'. Then, the final song's lyrics are taken from the Merseberg Incantations where Wodan heals a horse's broken leg with a chant of healing. So the entire show is about healing the world of man from the scars of war, lest we be overtaken by the grave." This was copy and pasted from "airlockengage" a few comments down.

I worked at a used bookstore, and one of our regulars is a guy about 65 or so who is a music fanatic. Any style, any era, he will listen to it. He has stories of meeting every band you've ever heard of from the 60s and 70s when they passed though Cleveland. His recommendations are gold. My wife and I love trying new music, and he came in one day and handed her a piece of paper with "Heilung: LIFA" on it. She said she would listen to it later on lunch break. He quickly held up his hand.
"No." You have to watch the video of the whole live performance. Trust me."
Of course, we did. When she went home she brought up the video of the performance, figuring she could try it for a few minutes as the performance began, then she would have dinner.
She said she suddenly noticed that the performance was ending, it had been an hour, and she had not thought of food or anything else. The music had CONSUMED her.

My grandparents came to USA, and their culture was largely dissolved in the English culture, though there was some revival in their old age, for whatever reason. So at least I knew some of the old songs (Some of the old Norwegian songs are among the oldest in northern Europe), which weren't taught to my elder siblings.

Massive respect to the audio engineer and the team. There's got to be 30+ Microphones up there they've got to track along with the Direct inputs from the keyboards, guitars, bass, vocals, drum kit, etc.). So much is going on and everything is perfectly processed, EQ'd, and balanced. Since the recording was taken straight from the mixer, I'm going to guess they maybe pulled about 16 to 32 bus tracks from mics/inputs for all the instrument and vocal groups along with an audience bus just to make things manageable in post production. Maybe he didn't group anything to bus tracks at all. I'm sure there was further mixing and mastering in the studio for some finishing touches though. The job was done perfect and the right way from the start. Fucking Primal and Raw. I can feel my ancestral genes and feelings screaming inside and fighting against the shitty conditioning of this corrupt and twisted western society. I truly love all of you, my brothers and sisters out there.

It's a fantastic musical tribute and connection to the history and people of northern europe, but it's also a very practiced and meticulous performance that allows everyone involved to make a living. The trappings of paganism are a part of that performance but it's not based on any one religion or ritual in particular.
It is spiritual in my opinion, but only in the sense that all music that provokes emotion is spiritual, which'll come down to how you as the individual percieve it.

Women had from the beginning been elevated in Christianity far above what the pagans managed, particularly in Greek and Roman society. Throughout the Middle Ages, women were revered as saints, doctors, and spiritual women, not to mention the deep devotion to Mary that characterized the period. It was only during the Enlightenment when philosophers elevated the ancient Greek tradition over the Christian tradition that women were placed in subservient roles practically and philosophically. As others have said here, woman was created from the side of man, co-equals with him in his place in the Cosmic Order and co-heirs of the Image of God and eternity.

For those who are confused on the time frame of what this is representing, it's not necessarily "Vikings," and more or less not Neolithic.
It's Proto-Germanic she's singing here, and in most of their music. It's Pre-Migration Period, 600 years before the Vikings, ~1st Century CE til ~550 when Elder Futhark broke into Younger Futhark. It's based on historical linguistic reconstruction and snippets of text found archeologically and through Tacitus & Saxo Grammaticus, some of which were carved in runes on bone fragments, or described pejoratively by Latin writers, who described the throat singing as like "howling dogs," when it would sound provisionally like in this video, inferred by the Sammi, Mongol, Indigenous Greenland, and Faroese traditions which survived the ages relatively unchanged.
Then they kinda do this English language "rap," which is based on descriptions of Galdralag and Seiðalag -- no surviving examples of which exist outside of very, very scant snippets in the Poetic and Prose Edda, and in descriptions by Saxo Grammaticus and possibly by Tacitus. The low growling and hissing, the forked fingers, is based on descriptions of Seiðr magic. That kind of image survived in the inspiration of "witches" which Christians were afraid of deeply, who were real people practicing a similar indigenous artform, and came to become an abstracted meme of its own that evolved & mutated into the 21st century in a vague smear of pop culture idioms.

This entire performance is an amazing accomplishment. The pieces are all visceral and pounding, the chanting is mesmerizing, the drumming is over-powering. Maria Franz in particular has an amazing voice for this type of work. Her laser-like control of every vocalization, for what is clearly a physically and psychically demanding performance, serves to emphasize and reinforce the amazing spiritual and ethereal nature of the entire set. The final piece is a solid sound wall of driving percussion and a healing vocal benediction of life itself. The performers, artists, and technical crew of Heilung, including the walk-on warriors, have created something truly amazing and timeless. A visual and auditory feast that projects directly into the soul of the audience. I feel cleansed and energized every time I listen to this live presentation from Heilung. Stunning. Simply outstanding. Thank you so much.
