I like both River Birch & Winterwood. And I love your flower mugs! And that texture kiwi over holly green is stunning!!🤩 You've got a bunch of nice stuff to put in your sale! Will bet you sell a lot!!
Excellent kiln load! Love the gnomes with the little moons. 🥰so darling! I love the river birch, how it melts so nicely with Norse blue. Thanks for the introduction! Good luck on your choices. Maybe test a couple of plates? 😉thanks again for all you share with us
Agreed! I-think the main thing drawing me to river birch is using it on plates Matte on a dinner plate is just not appealing to me. Otherwise I’d lean towards winter wood.
Love the River Birch but don't like the fact that it runs so much. LOVE the Holly Green and Textured Kiwi combo! The studio blue is gorgeous. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Lisa, new subscriber and brand new potter! I hand build and am fascinated with glazing. I'm Welsh, living in SK for many years and I'm wondering how cold it gets in PEI? Your kiln shed doesn't look insulated. My workshop is going to be 3 seasons only I think. Thanks for the videos, getting lots of great ideas, your work is lovely. I like both winter wood and river birch
How exciting! You are just at the beginning of your pottery journey! I fire year round in an uninsulated metal shed under my carport. I think I’ve fired when it’s as cold as minus 20 Celsius without any problems. Of course every kiln is different. When I bought it the company suggested if I was going to fire in outdoor conditions firing every few weeks is a good idea to keep things dry.
Thanks Lisa - I have a Skutt, the manual says the controller won't allow the kiln to start up at 0C - I think people over come that by putting hairdryers on it. We had a lot of -30 to -40 last winter so I will have to figure out how I'm going to deal with that. Also planning a trip to the maritimes, maybe next fall - going to look up Vaughan and yourself if you are going to be around:) exciting times in retirement. @@finklepottery704
I like them both, I like the subtle flecks of River Birch… so better on the bowls. I like the Winterwood, but I don’t like the big brown runs, I know a lot of people like the difference in texture on mugs, so the matte and the shiny feeling when drinking out of a mug.
I like winterwood best. Can you dip in a shiny clear over the winder wood? I love the pitcher with the simple flowers, adorable!! How many coats of flux to you put on where the two dipped colors meet? The “small” salad bowl is off the hizzle!!! Wow! Great kiln opening! 💜💜💜 one last question…do you put clear glaze over your animal decal? (I love them!) and do you wax them to keep the runny glaze for going into them?
Thanks. I’ve never tried a clear coat over winterwood Let me know if it works for you. When I use flux I typically only use 1thick coat. Thank you for your kind words!!
I love this all. I'm new, and that is so helpful. Thanks for taking the time to share.
You are welcome!

Thanks so much! And I agree. Winterwood and birch are both lovely

Thanks! Actually a test plate is next on my list!
I am leaning toward the River Birch so guess I will have to invest in a jar of it
lol the glaze addiction is never ending!
Beautiful pieces! I like the Winterwood.
Thanks. Yes winterwood is lovely. I wish it came in a glossy version 😊
Hi Lisa! I think I prefer the Winterwood, it’s just more organic looking…but it’s a tough decision, both are beauties!

Love all the combo but i like winterwood
It is a great glaze!
I prefer the River birch as it has a softer look and i think I need to buy it . 😂 your bowls looked stunning.
Thanks! Have fun with river birch 😊

Thanks so much!
I'm leaning towards the winterwood as long as not too many speckles. That bowl is spectacular...... holly green/textured kiwi!
Thanks! Yes the holly green and textured kiwi give a really interesting effect

Yes they both have their positives and negatives I think. 😊

River Birch can have more brown speckles - make sure to stir up the crystals from the bottom and apply the chunks evenly
Thanks! I took you advice and lots more speckles! I had stirred it but not very well, lol
Have you tried combining both to see if the Winterwood would get more glossy and maybe fewer specks? Thanks.
I have not tried that. Let me know how it turns out if you give it a try 😊
I will be trying it soon. Will report. 😁@@finklepottery704
