The only time I'd ever seen him cry was when this song was played at his older brother's (my mom's Uncle Nick) memorial service (they were half Cherokee and half Irish) their father would sing this and other Irish songs when they were children and this was one of their favorites.

This song is so far removed from modern society senses that I imagine many of the lyrics are often mistaken, such as “handsome boatman”interpreted as good looking rather than handy, or at the end “young men lay me down” sexualizing the act of pallbearers laying down a deceased man in his final resting place. It’s a beautiful song but not worthy of modern minds, to be fully appreciated it requires an old soul.
So many people wish they were Irish 😂 the reason the songs like this exist would make make u wish u were anything but Irish if you understood the pain that made a farmer able to write lyrics that resonate so deeply
