I had an Irish professor that said the Irish and the Russians have a lot in common: they like their drink and they like their misery. This song argues the case for the Irish side of that comparison.
    RIP Dr. Abraham

Germans drink more than the Irish. Are THEY "miserable"? Do "miserable" people produce the copious amount of joyful music and poetry that the Irish do? No, scarcely any country on earth can match Ireland for its artistic and spirited expression. Your non-Irish "Dr. Abraham" was merely perpetuating a common and hateful stereotype.

@@briangaritty8952 No he is right, some people like Russians and Irish have a lot of their culture refering to their strugle and sadness, especialy Russians. It doesnt mean they are bad people it's just a part of their history. I'm neither Russian nor Irish and i respect both of those people and love both of their culture.

Every time I hear this, it breaks my heart all over again. My maternal grandfather, a WW2 veteran, would rarely show emotion. The only time I'd ever seen him cry was when this song was played at his older brother's (my mom's Uncle Nick) memorial service (they were half Cherokee and half Irish) their father would sing this and other Irish songs when they were children and this was one of their favorites.

I wish I was in Carrickfergus
    Only for nights in Ballygrand
I would swim over the deepest ocean
The deepest ocean for my love to find
But the sea is wide and I cannot swim over
Neither have I wings to fly
If I could find me a handsome boatsman
To ferry me over to my love and die
My childhood days bring back sad reflections
Of happy times spent so long ago
My childhood friends and my own relations
Have all passed on now like melting snow
But I'll spend my days in endless roaming
Soft is the grass, my bed is free
Ah, to be back now in Carrickfergus
On that long road down to the sea
I'll spend my days in endless roaming
Soft is the grass, my bed is free

Yet another chapter in my life begins, and i find this song comes back to me. The adult life I've mentioned has been so amazing, and so dreadful simultaneously. I had a woman for a moment. I enjoyed her smile. And the color of her eyes as they glistened in the sun. Then one day she was gone. And i accept that. Life goes on.

This song is so far removed from modern society senses that I imagine many of the lyrics are often mistaken, such as “handsome boatman”interpreted as good looking rather than handy, or at the end “young men lay me down” sexualizing the act of pallbearers laying down a deceased man in his final resting place. It’s a beautiful song but not worthy of modern minds, to be fully appreciated it requires an old soul.
