Greetings from Crete!!! I do the same job for the summer for 5-6 days a week. I've come to a point that I wanted to have a fast setup. So I got a rack and put all the cables inside and they are connected all the time at the mixer so I only have to plug them in the microphones and pedals and speakers. Also I got a digital mixer which I can control by a tablet in front of me. All of these saved me time. I setup and I pack in about 15 minutes.

A great way to stop drunk people from crashing into you and your gear is to run an led rope light on the floor in front of the area you want to play. It's amazing how well it works as a boundary line, even the most pissed punters respect its power!

So $2000 to work your craft is not bad, considering I work in aviation and I spent $2500 just on the tool box I needed! However your job can be more enjoyable and feel like you're getting your money worth! Keep up the great work.
Really great to see all that laid out. Looper for. Self sound check is brilliant! When I was playing more pubs, I would split a two hour (or more) show into half hour sets and split it with another act (or two). This kept the audience interested and the musicians fresh. This also means we could take turns running sound for each other. You take a but if a hit in earnings, but pubs like it when you bring a party, and it's easier to land longer gigs.
Great video and we got a mini performance to boot! It's nice to see what a performer doing local small gigs should take with them. That's the part I love about it, the local and small part and how to keep the amount of gear manageable. Thank you Mary!
One thing I learned the hard way back when I was in a gigging band.... backups, backups, backups. Cables, cords, power sources, strings, amp tubes (valves), and anything else that can fail at the worst possible time. Loopers are one of the most innovative and useful items for guitar that's been developed since I started playing almost 50 years ago. Great rundown of your live rig and gear, Mary. Thanks!

Nice realistic overview of what actual working musicians use. No huge pedal boards or monster amps. Good solid state equipment that is reliable and rugged and just gets the job done. Nice video.
I just bought Faux Americana on Itunes and in my opinion, there is only one reason you aren't signed to a recording contract and touring the world right now. The damned recording industry drove itself right into the ground and kept its foot on the pedal until it was buried. Back in the day, someone would have signed you quickly! First new music I've bought in ages. Seriously. I mainly listen to the Stones and Zeppelin. lol Perhaps it's time for a new Album or EP? I'd buy it. :)

my thought would be NEVER use a mobile phone (or any transmitting device) anywhere near an amplifier because of the transmission sounds it will surely get caught and amplified finding their way to your speakers.

Spot on Mary!!!!! I do basically the same thing, I'll digitech jamman stereo, the big blue pedal, but I also use Boss Rc 20( 2001)& rc20xl,as well as Roland powered speakers that run on batteries, some times no power, last more than the 4-5 hrs gigs! Rock on girl!!!!
That Stagepas is such a reliable bit of kit for the cash. I bought one new about four or five years ago and it was well worth the investment. Thats the great thing about PA for musicians, if you've got access to gigs then PA pays for itself within a couple of months or so.

In the US, you might need a U-Ground adapter for your Power Bar if you're playing an older venue, had to start a gig late once because I had only a Two Conductor AC Socket and a Three Conductor Power Bar, someone did a store run while I set up.
Another great vid, thanks Mary! I wish I had seen this video before I started gigging, might have saved me some time and money. Although buying gear is fun, right? The Roland Cube is also handy for busking (aka "paid rehearsals!) although I prefer to use in-ear monitors for much better volume control and saving my ears (I have the SE215's, not the 425's that Mary uses, as I don't work for Shure and I'm not as good a musician as Mary is, hence less budget!). Oh, and whilst more expensive, if you can afford a wifi mixer (I use and love the Soundcraft Ui12) then you can save settings (mix, volume, effects, even backing tracks) for venues and re-use them when you play there again and get your friend/lover/groupie/bar manager (or 16yo son in my case) to roam the venue with an iPad/tablet and adjust the sound whilst hearing precisely what the audience is hearing. 3 years late to the party but I had to comment on the mic stand placement thing. I 100% agree with you! I was doing a pub gig and a lady threw her purse over her shoulder while walking by the corner of the floor that was serving as our stage that night. Her purse hit the end of the boom, causing the mic to swing in and hit me right in the teeth! 😂

Killing it as always Mary! My solo set up is very similar sans the pedals, it makes me cry when I go out on tour with my other band that I play drums in because it's so much stuff to load and unload hahaha

This is a great video and very useful to see everything listed out with clear explanations for the reasoning behind each piece of gear. Nice playing, singing to boot! My hats off to you for the 4 hour gig, I don't think I could ever learn enough songs to play that long!
One important way to stay self-sufficient at a gig is to bring your own beverage or whatever you require to keep you going (preferably water). I've known musicians who immediately go to the bar, open a tab and have drinks delivered throughout the evening. Then there's a bill at the end and this muddles the payment transaction.
I just love to hear you sing. What I also love is positive energy you project, it is so refreshing. Keep it up. Hopefully we get to see you on this side of the pond in 2018.
Mary you are way too nice. If one faces the mic boom in straight angle towards the audience, someone will fall on it and either damage your guitar (the good scenario) or knock your teeth in with your own microphone. First option happened to my poor old strat, and second one I just saw happen on a pub gig. After that, always angle the boom to the side, feels a bit awkward for a while but after that it's a second nature. :)
Wow, very nice video. Alot of useful information. The only thing that surprised me was that you didn't have any redundancy in any of your equipment, in case of a problem. I one time got a phone call from a guitar player because he was setting up at a gig and he accidentally dropped his guitar amp. He normally brings two amps, two guitars, etc. but thought he would be ok. The amp was acting up initially during sound check. I almost drove him my bigger amp to help him out. He got it working and it luckily worked all night without incident. Just a thought. Thanks for your video.

I mean WOW. but she explains the home equipment needed for a usual studio. glad she made a studio tour video. now that ive marked down every equipment on my phone its time to get a job and save up for the stuff i need and enjoy life like never bfore.

Hurray...! A songbook...! I'm rubbish at rembering lyrics too and always have my songbook on a stand in front of me - very low and flat so as not to look too obvious, but there none the less. In my world, no songbook - no gig! :0) Great video Mary - ta very much!

Awesome video, I just got the Roland Cube street EX, Sure SM-58 (with stand and cable) and I'm waiting for a wireless (battery powered) system for my guitar - I have the guitars, tuner, loop pedal, but I'm just putting it all together - including my songs .. so your video was really helpful - thank you!
That's a nice little kit, Mary, and I expect it will continue to serve you well for a long time to come. One thing that pleasantly surprised me was that you bring lights... Way too often, I see musicians show up at a venue, sometimes with thousands of dollars of gear... but not a single light... so, they play in the dark. I mean, would it would kill them to bring a couple of stands and LED pars? I tend to go the other direction and bring way too much stuff, but I'm foolish like that. Keep up the good work!
Love your videos! 1700 euros sounds pretty good to gear up, actually. I am a digital artist (VFX, motiongraphics) and when you go out into the world as a freelancer on your own you'd need a 3000 euro computer plus another 3000-5000 on assorted software licenses (depending on your speciality), plus around 150 a month for image banks, hard drives, etc. I think any artistic endeavor you follow you'd have to invest heavily in the beginning to get the ball rolling.

A very informative video and a great cover of Cry Me A River. I was surprised to see that you bring your own lighting, but it does make sense to rely on the venue for as little as possible. Plus, it looks like they conveniently also light up your pedals to cut down on guesswork and I really liked your tip about using a loop pedal to keep the music going while you adjust levels. Btw, that was a very inventive use of a drone. I would never have thought of flying one inside to get a shot like that.

And dont forget a flashlight :D it can be really hard to see anything on stage when you have to do anything to your rig without one
Just use your iPhone man. Flashlight built in and you are gonna have on you anyway.
it's still a flashlight. also, some phones dont have one built in. And some people dont like the distraction of having a phone on them while playing.
And sometimes you need to set up the light hands free and that's difficult with a phone. I also put a small pair of wire cutters in my case.

Another bit of essential gear everyone forgets - a $10 outlet tester. Plugging into an ungrounded power outlet can make for a not so fun gig.

Hurray...! A songbook...! I'm rubbish at rembering lyrics too and always have my songbook on a stand in front of me - very low and flat so as not to look too obvious, but there none the less. In my world, no songbook - no gig! :0) Great video Mary - ta very much!

Awesome video, I just got the Roland Cube street EX, Sure SM-58 (with stand and cable) and I'm waiting for a wireless (battery powered) system for my guitar - I have the guitars, tuner, loop pedal, but I'm just putting it all together - including my songs .. so your video was really helpful - thank you!
That's a nice little kit, Mary, and I expect it will continue to serve you well for a long time to come. One thing that pleasantly surprised me was that you bring lights... Way too often, I see musicians show up at a venue, sometimes with thousands of dollars of gear... but not a single light... so, they play in the dark. I mean, would it would kill them to bring a couple of stands and LED pars? I tend to go the other direction and bring way too much stuff, but I'm foolish like that. Keep up the good work!

Love your videos! 1700 euros sounds pretty good to gear up, actually. I am a digital artist (VFX, motiongraphics) and when you go out into the world as a freelancer on your own you'd need a 3000 euro computer plus another 3000-5000 on assorted software licenses (depending on your speciality), plus around 150 a month for image banks, hard drives, etc. I think any artistic endeavor you follow you'd have to invest heavily in the beginning to get the ball rolling.

A very informative video and a great cover of Cry Me A River. I was surprised to see that you bring your own lighting, but it does make sense to rely on the venue for as little as possible. Plus, it looks like they conveniently also light up your pedals to cut down on guesswork and I really liked your tip about using a loop pedal to keep the music going while you adjust levels. Btw, that was a very inventive use of a drone. I would never have thought of flying one inside to get a shot like that.

Have you considered getting a POG or other octave pedal for basslines? Mini POGs are pretty affordable. Great setup btw, pubs are lucky to have you.
