Mazda is small by car manufacturing standards, but builds some of the most enjoyable cars on the market. Whereas Toyota offers the high-mileage Prius to cheapskates, Mazda offers the Miata, the last remaining sports car and the best driving experience that can be had today.
The rotary engine is hugely addictive. It revs like a Ferrari and yet is affordable to build. Mazda have done more than any car company to make the rotary a success. Maybe the high point was their LeMans win with a rotary engine. (Look for a video of Mazda’s LeMans car here on RUclips. It sounds like nothing else on wheels.)
This company is fiercely independent. Mazda is one of a handful of car manufacturers who build their own transmissions. By keeping as much is possible in-house, Mazda’s Miatas are close to the same weight as the original car, introduced in 1990. This s an amazing accomplishment given all the safety equipment on a current model.
Mazda’s rotary still suffers from issues with detonation and high pollution, along with poor fuel economy. But Mazda sees this tiny engine in a new role: as part of a hybrid design offering significant weight reduction. Mazda and Toyota have teamed up with the goal of producing a far superior battery system from what we see today in EVs. It will take a while, but I have no doubt Mazda will eventually give us an EV that is a blast to drive.

To my knowledge no company has yet perfected the Rotary engine, including Rolls Royce. Apex seals, which seal the rotor's tips against the chamber wall, tend to wear out, and rotary engines often need a rebuild between 80,000 and 100,000 miles. By comparison, an average piston engine should keep running for 200,000 miles with only normal maintenance.

Such care, cleanliness, and precision in assembling the engine, but if you take it to a mechanic it's torn down and slapped together in a dirty environment using hammers, pry bars, and silicone to reassemble it.

I am surprised Mazda resumes making rotary engine, albeit a very small displacement as range extender for hybrid,

Was ist daran neu? Mazda hat wohl Alu einziger in Serienautos Wankelmotoren eingebaut und letztlich wieder verworfen. Warum sollte es jetzt damit wieder anfangen?…..
