Russian death estimates vary, given the footage of devastation and falling morale of Russian combat units its a safe assumption that Ukrainian death estimates are probably closer to reality than any other source. Which is roughly 18,000+ Russian deaths. I am not oblivious to propaganda from both sides so that number may be larger or smaller. Russia already has lost its credibility in just about everything, considering its secretive narratives and tight grip on state run media they refuse to show their own people the cost of Putin’s War. Russia has also failed to recover their dead for two reasons, either they have been completely destroyed in an area or they retreated because of such heavy resistance there was no time to recover their fallen. Ukrainians then secure the battle site and are able to report enemy casualties and loss of military assets. Now let’s talk long term conflict, statistically Russia has a superior military. It’s military personnel outnumber Ukraines by about 3:1 and Russia has a staggering amount of armored assets. They are a tank first military and have the largest stockpile of artillery in the world. So yes, Ukraine is taking many losses as well but to have Russia backtrack on their current strategy and focus on the eastern front is a substantial development. From here on out, it’s obvious that the war is going to get very brutal, no doubt both sides will take very heavy losses and it’s a shame that it has come to this in general.

They should work out an agreement where Ukraine allows Russia to pump and keep oil from East Ukraine, as well as other minerals, giving Ukraine a cut of the proceeds. In exchange, Russia agreeing to let Ukraine keep their autonomy in Eastern as well as the rest of Ukraine and Crimea. Maybe my reasoning has holes in it, but if there's any sanity left in Putin, if his goal of being in Ukraine has anything to do with economic gains and natural resources in Eastern Ukraine, then it might be worth a try to negotiate, and avoid a long, drawn-out conflict with many more casualties. And Ukraine getting what it wants- it's independence.
Ukraine was given independence in the 90s. Russia is already breaking that agreement. That kind of deal you thought of keeps Russia's hooks in and traps Ukraine with them.
Ukraine IS independent and has been for decades. Russia is attacking a sovereign nation for their land and resources as well as taking away another nation that wanted to join NATO and the EU soon. You are essentially advocating for a conditional surrender in a war that Russia started and has been the aggressors, who is to say they would stop then? and if so for how long? What if the rest of Ukraine joins NATO? Would you really trust Putin to keep his word if you were Zelenskyy after he said for weeks they were just doing exercises near the border before invading? Giving Russia those rights will give them a reason to keep a military presence there to defend its mining equipment and workers, effectively letting the Russian military occupy much of Ukraine.

2. Look at a map! Even if you were right about Russian casualties (you aren't: Ukraine has had much worse casualties than Russia), Russia is (i) much larger than Ukraine with a much larger military and can simply draw forces from there to defeat Ukraine; (ii) Russia invaded with a force much smaller than Ukraine's and has already achieved much.
For example, Russia has pinned down Ukraine's army in the east, which is out of fuel. It can't maneuver, nor even retreat. Russia also fixed in place most Ukrainian forces, getting them to commit to defending Kyiv. Now, Russia has withdrawn those forces and sent them east to link up from forces sent from (i) Russia (ii) Belarus in the north (iii) Crimea in the south, closing the cauldron, and will annihilate or force the surrender of the Ukrainian army in the east. Probably annihilate, since Russia is very, very angry about all of the war crimes committed by Ukraine (yes, Ukraine) against Russian forces, such as shooting them in the knees on video and murdering them, as POWs (and much more than just that).
Ukraine cannot win this war unless NATO joins in directly, which would lead to nuclear war.

They should work out an agreement where Ukraine allows Russia to pump and keep oil from East Ukraine, as well as other minerals, giving Ukraine a cut of the proceeds. In exchange, Russia agreeing to let Ukraine keep their autonomy in Eastern as well as the rest of Ukraine and Crimea. Maybe my reasoning has holes in it, but if there's any sanity left in Putin, if his goal of being in Ukraine has anything to do with economic gains and natural resources in Eastern Ukraine, then it might be worth a try to negotiate, and avoid a long, drawn-out conflict with many more casualties. And Ukraine getting what it wants- it's independence.
Ukraine was given independence in the 90s. Russia is already breaking that agreement. That kind of deal you thought of keeps Russia's hooks in and traps Ukraine with them.

Ukraine IS independent and has been for decades. Russia is attacking a sovereign nation for their land and resources as well as taking away another nation that wanted to join NATO and the EU soon. You are essentially advocating for a conditional surrender in a war that Russia started and has been the aggressors, who is to say they would stop then? and if so for how long? What if the rest of Ukraine joins NATO? Would you really trust Putin to keep his word if you were Zelenskyy after he said for weeks they were just doing exercises near the border before invading?
Giving Russia those rights will give them a reason to keep a military presence there to defend its mining equipment and workers, effectively letting the Russian military occupy much of Ukraine.
