Maestro Lagoya is one of the most inspirational artists, influencing so much of my musical career. The reason I perform mostly on a Dieter Hopf Virtuoso guitar for the last 20 years is in an effort to get close to his “perfect” sound. Thank you for posting!
This an absolutely beautiful recording, Lagoya in those years was at his ultimate. For anyone wanting to learn his style, listen to his amazing brief and intentionally light staccato at 1:20. Watch how he does it with the right hand on the 4th string in the camera closeup, using a strike/damp stroke by alternating two fingers: i/stroke, m/dampen+hold, m/stroke (while holding), i/dampen+hold, i/stroke (while holding) etc.
Muchas gracias.
In all the concerts that I saw Lagoya play, he always read the score with stand low to the ground so that everyone could see his entire guitar. My personal opinion as a player myself, I feel that Lagoya/Presti are the finest guitarists since recording began, to date. Unlike Segovia who played from memory even in his very late years in the one concert I was fortunate to attend, that while visually it was not intrusive, I did find the score a distraction in Lagoya's live performances. He did play most encores from memory however which was quite a delight to see and hear because that's when I felt he truly connected with his audience, but as far as his immense artistry, I found no difference in the soul of his delivery, whether he read or played from memory. This is a great post, many thanks to Christian for helping Lagoya live on forever.
First impression was that this was a rather sloppy performance (never heard it played like that), and then you realise that he is intentionally playing 2 independent 'grooves', one for the melody, one for the rhythmic chords. Amazing that this is done on one guitar by the same guitarist!

Beautiful touch to the instrument. Lovely interpretation.
Super musician - and super teacher..... and such a nice, humoristic person.
🎆ARTISTE EXTRAORDINAIRE DE FINESSE, DE BEAUTE, DE MUSICALITE
Un gran Maestro de la guitarra. Salud por la memoria de Lagoya!!!
So smooth
Such a shame that lovely phrasing and tone ideas get lost in the mists of time, thank goodness for youtubers. 😊😊😊😊😊😊
AWESOME!!!!!
I wonder how Segovia thought of his and prestis playing just beautiful so musical the tone colour sounds perfect. I guess he's be playing a Ramirez 1a
Lovely. Almost as good as Bream's playing. A 'cow' of a piece to play.
Tend to feel that Bream is more "technically mechanical" whereas Lagoya has such a smooth tempo
❤❤❤

Great write hand technique, but..., rather poor left hand technique. Great sound.

Alexandre Lagoya was the most devoted musician. His aim was to make the guitar resemble an orchestra.... and he did.
Safa
Pour moi, mieux que Segovia
