I had to laugh in the beginning. I diagnosed the starter brush issue on the first clunk of the solenoid. I work on ATV's and lawn equipment for a living and replace several sets of brushes every year. People that start and stop a lot tend to wear out brushes very quickly. I have customers that never wear out brushes, and others that I have to replace them every year.
Here's a question I have a 1999 450 forman S. Today I tried starting it, turned the key on and the green neutral light doesn't come on and wouldn't start. turned the key off and on several times and the green light came on and it started. I killed it to see what it would do, same thing green light didn't come on and it wouldn't start, but now green light doesn't come on no matter how many times I turn it on and off. Any suggestions? Thanks
@@6mallards I would start with checking the continuity on the neutral/reverse switch. Two wire connector on the right side of the frame below about were the air filter is positioned. Lt green/red wire to ground should show continuity when in neutral
Thank you sir. I'm betting I got the same issue . Saw the little bastard run under the tarp where I had my quad parked. Just ordered plug, coil and cdi box. Now its time to SNAP SOME NECKS UNDER THE TARP!!! DANG RATTS!!!
Sexy ESAB in the background. Best squirt gun I have ever purchased. Thanks for the diagnostic videos, I sure miss that kind of work. I sold my repair shop, and X wife in 2008 and moved to the big woods in open pit mine country 3 hours north. The deer just taste better here is my story.
some quad bikes have switches in there brakes and I saw that the qua was moving around did you try putting the park brake and standing on the foot peg for the reayer brake because moast quads have a safety feature on them so if the park brave and the reayer brake is not preast a secondary solenoid wil stop the power traveling to the starter.
Same thing happened to our Honda foreman 400. We sent it in for repair but it didn’t work with a new starter. We sold it and got a 550 cc arctic cat and it is crap. Now it doesn’t start. Dropped a valve and it is only two years old. Nice video. Good to see another nice four wheeler like that. Is the rear axle fixed or is it an independent linkage? Thank you
just curious... i injured a nerve in my left hand and my pinky up to my wrist has been numb for 3 mos... did you ever get feeling back in your thumb? if so how long did it take to recover... my doc says it could be 6 mos to 2 years for my injury... if it comes back. cheers
Good job tracking down the problem. I think I would just replace the starter as bad as the commutator looks. Wouldn't it cause the brushes to wear faster and uneven?
if you can find the brushes, emery cloth or fine sand paper will have the commutator looking like new. as long as none of the copper wires are broke on the amateur. i used to rebuild starters and alternators. just remember small starters with magnets, instead of coil fields. dont tap them with hammers, it can bust the magnets.
I have a Honda four trax as old as my dad and he’s 38. Stopped working about a year and a half ago and it won’t even crank. No engine sound, just turned on the neutral light. Batteries dead, no fuel, idk what to do?
Every time I hear that solenoid click on any of these atv's I just assume the starter needs some attention. Of course you could have just used the kick start lol
@@GuyinWY same here, I met up with the person I bought it from. Said I finally "broke it" and he is like....you do realize there is a kick starter🤨🤦.... meanwhile me🤯🤦😄, mine isint start, I press button and it just makes a click sound I think like yours, il finish the video (haven't yet) and see what happens
You do the wrong thing when you 'Tapp'' on the starter, because when the starter is stick on these Atv, you have just to get off the black cover in the left side to have acces to the starter gear, and Tapp on the starter and turn the gear with your hand until you feel the gear smooth! I repair mine like that yesterday :P
We have a similar quad and the ignition is not coming on at all. What could the problem be? I was drivibg it and it was working fine, and all of a sudden it died.
Really ? I've onky changed the brushes in my 88 trx300 1x in 34 years and still original brushes in my 86 trx350... Maybe you're doing something wrong or using crappy brushes. ..
too many move of the camera... cant handle it. sorry :( i had the same ATV... really unkillable... strong and reliable. dont sell it, looks in great shape ... (1985-86?)
That four wheeler is big money around 2000 grand the way it sits if the motor is not locked up and if you get the motor cranked and it runs 2500 all day that is the most sought after Honda four wheeler there ever was its still the best built bike there is people collect these and bring them back to immaculate condition prolly worth 3500 I would hold on to that thing and cherish and pass that sucker down to a good home it don't matter how broken everything is the bike is still worth money to people even if the motors locked up pinion gears busted front and back it's still worth about 600 so never let they thing disappear or junk it because of some bull crap they are the most simple things to work on you could rebuild the rear end front end motor and all just being a novice just knowing basic mechanics and a little research and that sucker is in very very very clean bike with a seat covered and running you could get 3 grand for it all day if you don't believe me look it up on Facebook they have groups just for these 350ds and four Trax 300s people are snatching them up quicker then you can put them on there!
Guy in WY they just are it was the first Honda 4x4 bike it's called a Honda fourtrax 4x4 trx 350d and people drool over them and they just made better things back then then they do today as you prolly know but how many straight axel front differential atvs have you seen it will pull like a train and run for ever you should feel like you got s good deal just to own that bike even if you have to rebuild something on it it's worth doing they will always be worth rebuilding!
The 2001 to 2003 Honda Rancher 4x4s (not sure the years).... are also straight shaft rear with front differential ATVs. They are also 350cc....... Excellent ATVs as well. The catch is most of them were electric shift.... but a number of them were also sold with manual shift. The manual shift ones are more desirable and will get more on the used market and are harder to come by. More importantly did he say "The Polaris started and Honda did not"?????? I have never heard that before. Its always the Polaris that does not start or is broken.
First check your battery voltage obviously, a dead or failing battery can cause you to not have enough power to turn over the starter. The clicking sound indicates that the solenoid is probably working properly. Next time instead of jumping it find the starter and tap it with a wrench or something that could rattle it a bit(not too hard though), if it starts after that your starter is failing but you can still get a little life out of it by tapping it with a tool whenever it won't start, often this happens in colder weather with a failing starter..
After you got power across the relay, you could have saved yourself time and your viewers a lot of motion sickness by just grounding your jump box to the case and hitting the power stud with the red lead. Seen bunches of guys test one your way, it spins so they put it back on, and then scratch their ass with a confused look on their face when nothing happens. Its got to have enough TORQUE to over come the compression of the engine and your shade tree test doesn't tell you that...... i know every Auto Zone has a "starter tester", but its also being "tested" by a $10 an hour counter guy thar doesn't know any better.
hard to see all from the video perspective, but i would guess if there are 4 brushes then you have a starter/generator combo, hopefully someone with more knowledege than i will agree or correct me
You could help him out rather then complain about it, and maybe give him a thanks for the time he spends to make the videos. Or just be a Asshat and move along in your perfect world.
Were you expecting him to not talk at all? I mean go ahead and mute it all and try to figure out what is going on, it is talking and explain or cheesy RUclips music
New brushes in the starter is easy, just had to do our old foreman starter brushes not to long ago. Over 13,000mi of checking cows on our 2001.
Good troubleshooting Blake!
Thanks Blake. I liked the way you did this.
Nice job Blake, thanks.
that"s why you have a kick starter too :-)
Thanks for the video Blake! I have never been very good at diagnosing electrical problems.

after hearing the solenoid when u would hit the start button I knew it was a starter mine went out today

Brushes was probably the most common problem with those old Honda’s . Pretty much A yearly repair

It’s a 240D.
You get it running?
Wow, I just finished the 6410 video
It’s a 10k sub bonus video! 😆
Guy in WY Looks like you need a new seat on the Honda
Just like my dad's vintage 87 Honda 350 joker is most reliable atv ever
It didn't look like the off/on/off switch on the left grip was in the center when you tried to start it.
I have a 83 200 big red I'm not getting hot on the ignition when key is on any ideas
how big are these quads are to the 2001 honda firtarc
Working on ATVs give me a headache
Thanks for the great Honda vid, it was very helpful. Where can I find the second part where you complete the fix?

Wish I could but I am quite a few years older with my ATV than yours, mine is an 86 like this one

bang on the starter"?
They have kickstart in case you don’t know
Put the parts on a cafe tray ,u don't lose parts

1983 240D
bimmerman3 I take it that is what is in the way of getting the 8n inside

brian bergman It’s just a starter. The generator is inside the engine, commonly referred to as the stator.
Damn interesting, but video camera way too much movement....
Brandon's name seems to come up pretty often around broken machines...just saying.
When a Honda wont start and a polaris does... it's end of days !! or time to buy a lottery ticket!! or maybe the universe has spun off it's axis !!
Take the front plate off and take the gear out and you can get it out
