  • Cascades 4x4 90 watt panels mounted to the front hood of my van build project…and they are working beautifully! This video shares the DIY approach I took for installation, and I would recommend this product to a friend. I intend to install on my off road vehicles as well.

    Hey I am in Parker Texas, and I am going to do the same solar panel install on my 2023 AWD Sprinter today. Your video is way more helpful than the other videos I have seen on the hood solar install.

    Great tip with using the zip tie to fish through the firewall. Worked on my 2022 Sprinter as well. Great vid!

    The January sun was beating down today, and it was warm, in the mid 70's. I washed my hood one last time before starting the install, and got some cool water from the hose onto the windshield. The windshield cracked from the change in temperature. Other than that my install is going good. I mounted the solar panels to the hood today, then went for a ride on my electric unicycle. Tomorrow I will tackle the wiring. I wonder how much a new windshield is for a 2023 Sprinter. My AWD sprinter is black, so it really soaks up the rays.

      Oh no, that stinks! Don’t know the cost but it’s a large windshield. Good luck!

    I travel full-time across the U.S. in my Sprinter camper van. I have 4 100 watt solar panels screwed into the top of my van's roof.
    I would be very nervous to adhesive tape solar panels to the top of my van's hood. Over time, the heat and cold extremes, plus the wind will eventually lift the solar panel no matter how strong the adhesive is.
    Driving down a highway and have that solar panel lift up, could be disastrous! The company should make it an option to be able to screw the solar panel into the hood and forget about the vinal.

      Thanks, you make a great point and it may be a reasonable fear. When I did my research I didn’t find much about the adhesive failing. The adhesive strength is supposed to similar to how windows are glued to the side of skyscrapers. Ultimately time will tell, I have only 6K on my Sprinter but I park it outside in Texas heat and so far no issues.

      So far so good. No adhesion issues and look as good as the day I installed them.

    The heat from the engine added with the fact that there are stick on so have no natural cooling will make them useless, but they look nice

    • @vandingo1
      @vandingo1  Год назад

      Well I hope you are incorrect, as would rather they not going sliding off on a hot day. So far charging results are good, but haven’t seen a hot Texas day.

      Demonstrably false. Bonnet doesn't get too hot, there is cool airflow during driving and when car is parked there is no heat from the engine. True that they seem to be too much effort for the result. They might get damaged from the chippings. Correction, I didn't notice it is hooked to the car battery. I thought it was an extension of the RV solar system. It makes more sense to just maintain the battery.

      @@pavel9652if you have an electronic sliding door, and have the van parked for 2+ days while going in and out of the van, the battery goes to “critically low” and the electronic door no longer works.. having the solar keeps the battery charged even without the alternator running so you don’t have to start the van and run it for a half hour just to use the door.

    • @Travelingboutz
      @Travelingboutz Год назад +1

      Idea is that when the van is running, the alternator is keeping the battery charged.. but when it’s not, the hood cools down and solar efficiency goes up.

    • @pavel9652
      @pavel9652 Год назад +1

      @@Travelingboutz That is quite a bit of parasitic draw. Maybe disconnect the sliding door when leaving the vehicle for longer periods?
