- I met up with Matt from HZ watches, a local here to me in OZ...literally one suburb away from me.
We sat down discussed watches and this hobby and he showed me his watches he wanted photographed.
After spending time with the watches myself, I decided these are too cool and great value as daily's, so here they are.... HZwatches HZ.01
Pre-orders open January 28th

Thanks for watching..
Was $215 with tax+shipping. I'm happy with the cost. Simply stating the $160 price was for the initial buyers. Again, very happy with mine.
This watch seems like a winner for the money, very clean and clear tuxedo style design, I like it.
Watching this because the presale of Version 2 is today. They added a screwdown crown, 2 more layers of lume, and made the date window 0.5mm larger, so all the gripes mentioned he addressed.
Nice video, Peter, and props to your mate. The watch is very nicely executed. I really like the tux style dial, hands and round date window. My beater is a Lorus titanium. 37-38 mm titanium watches with quartz movements are the ideal everyday pieces. Small, light, thin and unobtrusive, they can make you forget you are wearing them. Set them once a month and forget about them until they are needed. It's an old-fashioned watch sensibility that really works.
Thanks for the heads up and supporting an Aussi watch guy, nice to see. Signed up for one already 👍Next one he makes, no day/ date, automatic 9039, bigger hands so more lume and a screw down crown, he would thousands bro.
Thank you for supporting your local watchmaker! Bravo for this watch with its second hand touching the indice on the dot. Tissot PRX, please learn from this!
Brilliant design for a Brand Opener .
Love the Pin Buckle repeat and the enamel logo on
the caseback .
Congrats Matt …. 🫶
The whole design has something mid-century industrial, that's for sure. I don't mind about the date, but the hands look a tad short, not cause they are, it's just the shape. Other than that, nice try, nice watch, grab and go indeed, GADA in fact.
Thanks for the presentation Peter, be well mate.
PS The quartz hint on the dial is spot on!
Not pretending to be something its not thats for sure..👍
That's a looker! The size is perfect too. Thanks for the video.
Another great video... kinda come to expect it now 😆
Appreciate you repping a local boy, seen him here and there on the forums, and stoked that his watches are so good! It's not my style (or size!), but I really like the look after seeing them in your vid.
If you see this, nice work Matt!! Hope your first HZ watch launches well, and you keep growing your brand! Keen to see what comes next 😎
Meccaquartz or hand wind movement, I’d be in. That ticking doesn’t go with how elegant the watch looks.
Thanks Peter for letting us discover this model
I obviously have never seen one in the metal, but, from your video, I like everything about it. The perfect urban, smart looking grab and go watch.
The dimensions are spot on
I am a sucker for negative space on a dial
The « colorful tuxedo » style is perfectly executed
Having a Sinn 556a, a small date window does not bother me. Actually I prefer it better here as it does not get in the way of legibility, the way the stupid cyclops does on a Rolex Datejust
The applied hour numerals are perfectly sized
At this price level, quartz is an excellent option, otherwise you end up with cheap and quite inaccurate Chinese movements, as in Merkur watches
IMO, way more versatile than a G-Shock which don’t make sense in town, unless you work in law enforcement, construction or handle large and heavy equipment all day long.
The push-pull crown, meaning you don’t need to be super careful with the thread when you screw the crown back in place after setting the time or date. It’s something I really enjoy on more expensive pieces, like my Formex Essence 39
Plus, obviously, the nice pop of colour on the tip of the seconds hand 😉.
Your mate has a successful business coming.
I'd love to see more quartz watches use the seiko mecaquartz with the smooth hand.
You're right Peter; spot on as a daily wear.
And, since the Pandemic, I find myself wearing dailies and only seldom having to wear true dress watches.
This one can easily be worn at social gatherings and at the office ... home office that is 🙂
Thanks for sharing my friend. I hope all is well.
The significant improvement in industrial processes is enabling inexpensive products to have tight tolerances. There are a lot of great watch bargains out there.
Well said Alix 👍
Completely agree with your gripes, especially the date hole. But I love the look nd layout of it, definitely thinking of getting that blue one, maybe a future version 2 will improve on those gripes.
I like it. I think the design is great, easy to read, good proportions, case size and shape, materials, I also like the colors. My niggles would also be the date window is a bit small for my 56 yo eyes too. Great price!
Pre-Registered to buy one 🍾
You'll love this..enjoy 👍
This watch is 🔥 imo. I’ll definitely look for a future release from this brand. I like this current one but i think i missed the lower launch price.
These look fantastic! Love the minimalist approach, yet enough details to find it interesting. I’m with you on the date window being too small. A little bigger would increase legibility and improve the symmetry with the day window. Just my thoughts. Love the caseback and logo design! Great price for this titanium daily!
Nice watch, nice price. A little less if imported into Europe. 🇪🇺Thanks Peter.👍
For this price, even if it's junk, how can I pass this up. However, they are not junk....Peter says so and I trust him. I love the look, the size (38 is my favorite size), and that Burgundy calls to me. I will be doing the pre-order. For a quick grab an go watch, it's a no brainer.
Couldn't agree more Fred 👍
Creating a partnership with Formex to offer those microadjust bands and clasps would be a marriage made in heaven. Nothing wrong with a standard pin buckle, but that strap is top notch.
I like simple, interesting quite well specced Quartz watches . I have a bertucci because it was titanium, sapphire and field style. A marathon because it is fibre resin with sapphire and tritium, and now this for the dressy option.
It’s kind of a Longines Spirit and a Polerouter combined. Nice design and nice price!
This looks lovely! I love the proud mention of the crystal movement. Technically quartz watches have more movement than any mechanical. 😉
That is a really beautiful watch and the slight hint there is a quartz inside is very well made.
Handsome watches with perfect dimensions and good specs for little money. I hope they put a little effort in second hand alignment on their production models. Very nice!
Love the design, and at € 150 it's a steal
I saw these recently and I think they're awesome. Everything you need in a dressier grab and go and more. I'm a day date guy and it is executed here is almost perfectly. The only wish is the lume was a bit stronger, it would have been perfect with that. Also, the owner seems like a great guy.
Love the design. Agree with critiques...needed a bigger date window and i would have preferred the numbers with lume also (even if the lume was stronger on the hands only).
I like it! Maybe make the date window slightly larger and a curved rectangle to mirror the day window? And longer hour hand? I know, it's easy to comment on a design vs staring at a blank piece of paper 😛
I jumped in on the presales on this also.. It's elegant, simple, classic, modern, quartz and good value in one. Also day and date . I think the date is just too close to the number track, and arguably a bit small. There really are too many micro brand Divers copying eachother ad nauseum. Also, im done with automatics...
Why didn't he talk about the significance of the 32,768Hz that's so proudly printed on the dial and buckle? Thought it would have a hi beat quartz movement like on some Bulova watches but it looks like a normal quartz to me.
I’ve ordered a Burgundy, chatted to Matt a few times on AAWF and just like Jody and Steven with the Erebus, I’m excited to help out a fellow Aussie watch enthusiast!
Champion, enjoy the watch, excellent daily beater 👍
Really nice looking watch.
Looks good Peter. I’ll check them out. Good to support local Aussie too!
Pretty cool, might have to pre order one! Cheers from Essendon
Cheers from Mount Waverley
Great watch and good luck to your mate!
Very handsome watch! 👍
I have been looking at this watch, I think they are great value for money.
Always love a good titanium.
Peter, a great watch, already sign to get two, one for my elder son, who is looking for a nice dress watch and surely one for me too ;-) Tell your friend he did all right. At least in my opinion. Cheers.
I do like the basic design and the day/date gets a thumbs up from me but agree about the size of the date window. From the video the hands don't look like they stand out that well against the dial from some angles. The Seiko5 currently on my wrist has great legibility which I need for seeing the time when I don't have my glasses on. An age related factor that now decides my watch collecting.
Amended 14th May 2024 . Mine arrived today 133GBP + postage so no taxes . Overall I am pleased . It has something of an old Oris about it with the concentric outer ring pattern. The lume is noticeable when I leave my light filled room and walk down the dull corridor. It is attractive and legible. It is certainly light . Strap good. Finish good. The day looks nice . Moans and niggles? I agree the date is so small as to be unreadable . I wonder if the colours should be bolder ( I have Burgundy. ) . Conclusions: I have lots ion watches that look similar. This is different to anything I have. Clean simple but with enough interest in the form and dial to be interesting. A GADA watch? maybe.

Thanks for sharing 👍
best intro on you tube mate
😊🙏
I’m really liking this. I’m going to give the green a go.
Good looking piece
Excellent review - looking forward to getting mine in a couple of months!
Hope you enjoy it! 👍
Have you heard when they begin shipping?
Wow I love this style of watch ! Thanks for the review 👍
My pleasure 👍
I have one serious pet peeve with quartz watches: the second hand MUST hit the markers correctly. If it stops between markers it is a non starter for me. Alignment is a huge QC indicator.
Absolutely, which is why I really appreciate when some watches actually do.
Probably more difficult to achieve than straight mechanical, at least in practice.
There's absolutely nothing about this watch that I dislike. Really good job by the creator. I would buy...but I just don't need another daily beater 😅
Mint!!! Stick a 262 kHz-frequency quartz movement from Bulova into them and you have a world beater :)
That looks nice. My daily beater is the Casio Oceanus S100, also a titanium workhorse. It’s not as inexpensive as this HZ but it’s the most comfortable watch I have. Great video as usual!
Reminds me of the Hermes H08.
I love the watch and I think it looks a real strap monster - but like you the date is to small for my 53 year old eyes :) But at the money a real bargain.
These look nice and quite unique
Well finished titanium, wow, for that price? Sweet. Unfortunately not my size, and date legibility would be improved in a 42mm. Missed an opportunity on the lume as well, for the numeral indices. Also would like to see more color options on the middle dial plate, as it comes across quite plain, unfortunately. A great first effort though!
Thanks, looks like a good deal, ordered the blue version! 👍🏻
Ordered mine!
Maybe I missed it in the video, and if so, I'm sorry, but:
Any word on what international shipping is going to cost?
I would buy one if the date window was a little bigger. My eyesight isn't the best and it looked hard to read. I will be eagerly awaiting his second watch
Thinking of placing a cyclops over my date. Why not? 😊
Looks nice 👍🏼
For the price WOW ! What a grab and go.
Totally agree brother
Nice looking watches for the price. Thanks Peter.
You bet, thanks for watching Bob...be well brother
Just a great desing. Not a hater of quartz, this would have been amazing with something more spesial, like a mechaquartz with higher beatrate of the secondhand.
Nice one! Jumped on this too, cool Melbourne vibes styled on them ;-)
Really nice, I think Matt nailed it ! My only 'gripe' is the size, 40mm would of been better in my opinion.
This is a great value
I am going to get one of these . But which colour? Burgundy, Blue or Green?
I personally like the Blue..
All three 😂
Would buy one in a heartbeat if there was no day date complication. An extra mm would'nt hurt either. Maybe next time. Good luck Matt.
The web page shows lumed Arabics. Nice.
Not sure these pre production version had lume on the arabics, looking forward to the production version 👍
These look like a bargain. Any reason why the green dial is £50 cheaper in the UK, is it no longer the sought-after colour of a few years ago?
When I came across these on social media, like you, my interest was immediately peaked, simply thanks to that design. It took me a while to let it sink in that with this price there wouldn't be (of course) a mechanical movement. In a way, the biggest disappointment therefore is that I might have been really tempted would this same design have been executed to a more premium level with higher grade components and a mechanical movement. Currently, I kind of see this play as a competitor for Swiss Watch Company. I have been seriously tempted to try their ARK GMT, which is a nicely informal daily with great colours and a fun implementation of the GMT complication. It would have been fine had it had a date instead. The launch price of this is even sharper. There are similarities in approach, but they're very different watches. This one's tuxedo dial could still push for slightly more formal occasions, yet the SWC case wears a little smarter than their fun-driven dials. The difficulty I experience is letting go of my 'mechanical/automatic' watch focus. Having a hardened steel grab'n'go-type 'travel/adventure' watch always at the ready -- a niche currently filled by my rather cheap (and admittedly not so nice and kind of traditional looking) Citizen chandler -- does work for me. The issue is, the niche is filled, and it's already 'worn' and whenever I want to wear something nicer, I have my growing collection of nicer mechanical watches. Essentially I don't need choice for that grab'n'go purpose and my list of demands to replace that very cheap chandler with something nicer is rather long. True grab'n'go for me benefits from a solar (or very longlife battery) movement, neither of which this HZ has (nor the SWC). Mainly what both offer is a design I'd enjoy more with a (presumably) better and more refined execution (though I note that the edges of the numerals appeared to have some ruggedness in your footage which I cannot really ascribe to anything, but funnily enough also applies to the SWC). I saw renders of this HZ with longer hands, which I preferred and aid legibility even further. You mentioned thicker hands, and I suppose actually that the longer hands stay thicker for longer, too. It would have meant slightly more lume too, and indeed, I actually expected the numerals to have been lumed. Not so much at the price, but rather as part of the design and construction. It is good to have a hardening of the Ti confirmed. I actually thought they weren't going to harden it from an exchange on social media. I also completely agree that the date window is too tight. I can still read it fine in your footage, it's just visually a smidgen too tight. As it stands, I remain on their mailing list and for the money I might just go for one and see how it truly compares to my chandler for the same purpose. Perhaps it is more of an upgrade than I think, but my rational mind says I've got enough choice of more refined pieces which I will wear daily regardless and the 'beaten up' chandler can just keep on serving that exact purpose.
I believe the production versions will have lumed arabics 👍
@@PeterKotsa that would be a nice touch. Even if lume is never a must have for me, dressy as I am in my inclinations, when present it is best well implemented
No lume on the numbers is a deal-breaker for me at any price but if that we're there I'd happily pay twice the asking price. Let's hope v2 adds that as well as enlarging the date window.
Very nice, but two things are a deal-breaker for me:
1. On the blue colourway one shown, the seconds hand didn't line up with the indices. The green one did. Need to weed that out.
2. Writing the oscillator frequency on the dial and the buckle? Oh please! It's not a Bulova running at 262kHz.
I'll keep a watchout on this brand - looks like a very promising start and I think there will be one in my collection some day.
👍👍👍 Nice Watch 👍👍👍
I like it.
Very nice looking. But I would prefer an NH35 there.
Looks like a variation of the Vario empire watch.
@0:35 the launch price shows as 349 for me. Would have been a non-brainer at 249.
Unfortunately the launch prices have expired
I like the design, but am not a fan of quartz movements. One idea I do like is putting a little less money into the watch and a little more money into the strap. In my opinion, a quality strap makes all the difference in wearing enjoyment. I would much rather have a $200 watch on $100 bracelet than a $300 watch on a $10 bracelet.
I like this watch but i dont know if i would put it against a seiko 5 which costs half
Should make s no second hand version. And enlarge the numerals s bit.
And throw in a titanium bracelet for $80 more.
Can you link the brand and type of the auto close grey strap? I've been looking for one - not sure what they are properly called. Thanks!
artemstraps.com/products/loop-less-grey-sailcloth-watch-strap-with-grey-stitching
The date window is FAR to small, and the hands are illegible in certain lights.. They are too slim, and not differentiated from the the brushed background enough (and i own one)...
0:49 AND…..Sold, just ordered the Blue
Enjoy..👍
What’s the website called?
Looks good. Versatile size that won't alienate small wrists. I just don't care for the "32,768Hz" branding since there's nothing special about that spec in a quartz movement.
Nice!! Not for me, the date window.. plus a day window.. maybe with no complications it would hit my taste.
I took thought that date window and the minute hand was too small. Other than that it's a on my short list.
Yep agree, the bigger date window would result in a buy for me. The numbers look a bit squished.
Nice looking watch! Just checked their website, price seems increased to 349 AUD?
Correct, launch prices are finished
It would be perfect for me if it had a GMT function!!!
Nice one.
Uauhhhhhhh, its great. I want it... 😁
Overall I really like the watch and think, as you noted, its a winner based on looks and value. But why a date/date complication? IMO, ditching them would result in a better looking watch, and I, like everyone, have a phone in my pocket if I need the date.
You might be right that the same watch without a day/date complication would be a cleaner, possibly even less expensive watch to make and to buy and might be a good addition to the existing line to consider. It is a handsome looking watch, but I do agree with the author of this video that the numbers/window size for the date look too small in comparison to the letters of the days. I could live with the loom as is.
The same thing about having a phone in your pocket for day/date could be said of using your phone for telling the time also..😊 personally I like a day, date, time watch ..
@@jonathancarson1974 Which is why they build them. Each to their own. I just prefer the simplest, cleanest dial possible in what I hang off my wrist.
Huge waterproof is not an issue for me, because daily watch is for beeing a companion in work. (Unless you're a pro-diver)
Beatutiful.
As it goes I brought one. I went for the Burgundy. Not a safe choice . My head said Blue , of course Blue , my Heart said "you don't have anything in a red/burgandy etc " My Bum was quivering when I hit the pay now. But at the end of the day it is super original , very distinctive and very cheap, but not "cheap" . I have never been a gambler , I am to poor to waste my money. . Was in the pub tonight my good mate , who I have watch banter with, had a Cartier Santos 7k GBP which he upset with as its not running to plus or minus whatever. I had my Lorus Lumibrite full dial lume 30GBP that glows like a UFO . Burgundy what was I thinking of....I will obviously have to get a tan to wear it ....I will obviously have to take my family to The Med this summer ......my kids will love holidays in the sun......My wife will like it too and probably get very "sexy " with me with all that sun , vino and good food . All for 158 GBP inc postage . Burgundy does not ,now I have thought it through , seems bad choice . Richard
"My Bum was quivering" 😊😂, thats very funny Richard😂
Put an NH35 and I'll get one.
I love it...but is the radius on the top of the day window slightly off? I was looking at pics on the HZ site and their Instagram feed and it the arc of the day doesn't fit proportionally with the radius of the hour-marker track above it. Is that just me?
These are pre production watches, so hopefully if there are any little flaws they get sorted..👍
