Horror Comedies for the 20 year old crowd.
They casted this movie perfectly. Matthew, Sarah, Freddie and Linda were absolutely perfect for their roles not only physically, but they captured their personalities really well too and really gave them depth.

Daphne is my favorite. Because when I was a little girl, the only thing you needed to make me love a cartoon character was for their color scheme to be purple, and Daphne was a pretty girl with a purple dress. Now I like her because of the eventual subversion of the damsel in distress trope and how modern incarnations turn her girly personality into an asset instead of leaving her foolish and danger prone, which is awesome. But I also still like pretty girls and purple dresses, so there you go. Some movies aren’t meant to be art, just fun, and that’s how I see Scooby Doo. Objectively shitty, but when I think of it I remember having fun watching it, and that’s enough for me.
Definitely agree! When I saw the movie when I was younger, I thought it was the coolest thing ever when she fought against that villain at the end of the movie on her own. It was badass!😁
I remembered the acting in this movie being really good from watching it when I was ~13, and I'm glad to see that holds up. Shout out to Freddie and Sarah's supernaturally long lasting and stable marriage btw. Good for them.
This film is criminally underrated. Studio meddling held it back from being perfect (just check out the deleted scenes as an example) but it's still a solid movie. I can definitely see it gaining a cult following in the near future.
Rods toy box I always saw the movie attempting to be a loose adaptation of Zombie Island, with the team split and the real monsters and the scrappy hate, with some modern sarcasm and satire thrown in. I think that, like the Mario Bros. movie, the studio and director should have been on the same page from the start, and changing the tone partway through production just made things oddly disjointed. That, and Gunn shouldn't have attempted an R-rated Scooby Doo film to begin with, maybe PG-13. We are talking about a children's franchise whose most adult films up to that point hadn't gone past PG.
That fart scene in the knight suit, has to be one of the funniest fart gags ever *and it’s a fart gag from a live action scooby doo movie* Rewatching just now had me dead lol
I love the movie, it's a fun "feel good" film when you've had a rough day. Also Linda Cardellini IS Velma. She is why Velma is my favorite character of Mystery Inc.
I may be a movie critic - but the first Scooby Doo live action is hands down entertaining! Definitely added to my guilty pleasure films, even as the years progress!
It's because the film was too mature for kids to grasp. Scooby Doo was a sacred franchise for kids because they aren't taken seriously like adults are when it comes to creating concepts for a demographic. Like some of the stuff you think are for kids really aren't for them. So to have bunch of adult actors like Gellar and Prinze take that away from them when they've barely touched a movie aimed at kids was a slap in the face to the legacy of Scooby Doo. Kids didnt know who Lillard, Gellar and Freddie Prinze we're at the time.
My favorite Scooby Doo character is Tim Curry. Also, Ryan's Patreon is the most worth supporting of any of the Patreons I support. He has this cool ability to actually follow through with things he says he'll do.
I remember playing Night of 100 Frights as a kid, where Tim Curry voiced a character that brought back a bunch of monsters from Scooby-Doo’s past, then thinking it was funny he voiced almost the same part in Scooby-Doo 2 like a year later.
I love these films, no matter how bad they are. As a kid I'm certain my nostalgia got the best of me since Scooby-Doo was one of my favorite cartoons, but now for just the campyness of it I love it.
I felt that the iconic "Fart Contest" scene was an ably laconic statement on the then-relaxing quality standards in the baked beans industry; as, of course, the "Shaggy" character and the "Scooby-Doo" were able to release enormous amounts of pressurized methane gas from their anuses, we were painfully reminded of what was then a very serious issue facing many of us in the Western hemisphere at the time. Equally telling was the "Shaggy" characters' ability to _ignite_ his violent flatulence, which of course shined an accusing light on just how rancid our then-baked bean farts truly WERE. A daring and audacious metaphor on the filmmakers' part. And, naturally, the best part of all is that it has dated _wonderfully._ Pip pip! Good show!
I still adore the live action just because of the inherent goofiness and disfunctionality of a cartoon being produced in a real world setting, it doesn’t take itself seriously and so is perfect for its target audience ( and me a 17 year old that adores cliche monster flics ))
"Do not go into that spooky [ISLAND] castle" Knowing the James Gunn stuff now, I am starting to think there might be a liiiiitle bit of ADR going on there.
My favorite character is definitely shaggy. I think out of all the characters he's more relatable and the way they expand his character in mystery incorporated only made me like him more.
Shaggy, when i was younger, was my childhood hero. It was always his nonchalant but over the top sense of humor that made me the sarcastic prick i am today
Favorite character: Daphne in later seasons as she actually became a well rounded integral part of the team, instead of the danger proned eye candy ginger ditz of the first seasons.
I always say and I will always stand by this, that this is the best casting ever for a cartoon to live action movie adaptation. They look AND sound like the characters, it's spot on! The Flinstones movies are a close second I suppose haha
I don't think that SMG sounds or looks like Daphne, but Daphne was a very boring character, and the SMG version of her as a self-satire of the character and a meta pop-culture reference ("we know that you know that SMG is Buffy, and Buffy kicks ass") is a lot better than a faithful remake of the character would have been.
While the concept of an R-rated adult Scooby-Doo would have been interesting, if done as a satire, I love these flicks because they don't do what the likes of the live action Transformers of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles adaptations do: Try to make it pointlessly dark or edgy. I know that those examples came after the Scooby-Doo films but, like you said, the fact that characters FEEL and LOOK just like cartoon characters in a real-world setting is truly is refreshing in my opinion. Fantastic video! Gave me a whole new perspective on these films with the context and era in which they existed. Lots of new facts that I didn't previously know too! (:
Well this explains why I love this movie so much. As a fan of the 90s Addams Family and Brady Bunch movies that parodied the original properties by setting them in modern times, as I got older I found myself appreciating and getting a lot of the jokes in the first live-action adaption. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one.
Mr. Hollinger, my favorite is Velma--the one doing all the work!🤓 Thank you for explaining! I understand nobody likes Scrappy, but making him the villain was too "postmodern"; I wish the villains were played "straighter." | Are you still uninterested in the Cartoon Network series _Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated_ ? I'm under the impression it might have the right amount of sophistication for you: it still has traditional elements of the series, but the humor is much more sly than what was in _What's New, Scooby Doo?_ , and there is a single over-arching mystery, featuring an older, more corrupt group of mystery-solvers. I would love to know your opinion on it, if that interests you.😊
I think what you did not research was, before the introduction of Scrappy, Scooby doo ratings were sinking and the studio made Scrappy as a last resort to help save the franchise and if it failed, they would just have to shut down scooby doo forever.. And the introduction of Scrappy brought new life to the series, and as ratings went up (clearly people were interested) the producers put 2 and 2 together and decided to put more focus on scrappy as according to them, he was the reason for good ratings..when the ratings started to fall again, they tried different formats until the original was finally restored.. Without Scrappy, there would be no more Scooby Dooby Doo
I remember wishing for more of these movies when I was a kid made with the same cast. Also, imagine if they did a dark scooby doo film without being too much adult or kid focused, rather just a more realistic representation of how these characters may act in todays world. Think of it like a Jack Nicholson Joker in a Christopher Nolan film, retaining the comedy but just changing the tone. Obviously dumbed down a bit though.
I adore the live actions movie, is it purely fueled by my nostalgia and love of the scooby doo show, yes, but let me just say there is no other movies like them, and that’s why I like them so much!
Daphne was always my favorite but she really became a favorite after she finally learned how to throw hands 😂 and Shaggy is a close second being a fellow stoner. 😂
Honestly, I think they were both good. They picked just the right actors to embody each character (also the fact that Fred and Daphne are married IRL is GREAT) and the special effects for the monsters in the second one were badass! The older I get, the more I enjoy them!
This will always be one of my all time favourite family films, maybe that's just nostalgia talking but i'll always stand by that, a film that can entertain ANY demographic is special in my books, shame we only got 2 of these films really
How can it be that you are taking a movie that I already accepted into my heart as a pile of crap and are now making me doubt myself into thinking it's a masterpiece of satire and subtlety?
When it comes to choosing favorite characters, if we're talking about the main cast, as cheap of an answer as it may be, my favorite Scooby-Doo characters is Mystery Inc. as a whole. Each one of them works off each other and in many ways need each other, Scooby needs Shaggy, Fred needs Daphne, Velma needs everyone, and everyone needs her, and because of the family theme that has carried itself throughout each incarnation, both TV and film, I honestly love the Mystery Inc. characters as they are presented as a collective. My favorite guest characters are the Hex Girls and Vincent Van Ghoul (because of Vincent Price voicing him), my favorite one off supporting characters is the Grimwood Girls from Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School and I also like Scrappy, both as a hero and as a villain. (Especially in the Scooby Apocalypse comics by DC.) My favorite villain in the entire series Professor Pericles and Mr. E from Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated (which I cannot stress enough, is a show I highly recommend you give a watch).
My favorite character is actually daphne. I've always thought she was cute and was the easiest to relate to. Spoiler alert in the new scooby doo show daphne becomes a journalists while velma joins NASA and fred becomes a news airman (or something) so daphne also seems more down to earth (since her job is on par with what most people have access too.)
shaggy and velma are my favourite characters because i see myself in both of them, i’m a dorky know-it-all who is a huge coward (shoutout to my anxiety) and eats way too much. one reason i love the mystery inc. series so much is how much more they fleshed out velma, which made her that much more relatable to me
I really liked this video! I have always loved the first scooby-doo movie and nobody ever seems to agree with me! Spot on about Shaggy's actor, he is terrific. I had no idea the same guy that wrote Guardians wrote this movie, that's awesome. Good stuff man

Ryan Hollinger you can defend these live action movies but you can't defend the made for Tv ones produced by Cartoon Network in 2011 and 2012 those are really bad made films
Ryan Hollinger Hey, I love your videos but cannot afford Patreon at this time. However, I’d like to request a video on the 1995 film Kids. This is a contreversial masterpiece about teenagers in the height of AIDS.
I will always enjoy monsters unleashed. The monsters were incredible to my young mind, I felt for scooby and shaggy feeling useless, wanting to help, and the action scenes felt exciting to watch. Also, scooby and shaggy vs the Cotten candy monster always made me laugh.
Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated is worth a look! From the snippets I've seen, it adds a lot more depth to the characters and there seems to be an overarching storyline 🤔
The Melvin Doo bit and the first half of the informational video where dude says "I'll crush your bones into dust," legit made me laugh out loud upon rewatching. Something about the over the top stupidity of calling a dog, and violent overreaction to a spilled drink just tickled me pink.
I used to love this movie, it's awesome to see a whole video dedicated to it. My favourite character is probably generally Fred for most series of Scooby, especially Mystery Inc. His obsession with traps was always good for a laugh and his realisation of his feelings for Daphne was great. Also he's always the leader of the gang, and he gets extra props for being the only character to still be voiced by the original voice actor, I don't know what they'll do if he ever retires. In Be Cool, Scooby-Doo it's tough, I loved all the characters in that one, but my favourite's probably Scooby, I love his dry humour and wittiness, but Fred and Daphne come in a fairly close second. Keep up the great videos, you've got me interested enough in the first four reboot movies to go back and watch them all again (I only saw two or three as a kid). Also, have you seen Be Cool, Scooby-Doo, if so what'd you think of it?
Freddie Prince Jr. getting a razzie nomination pisses me off TO THIS DAY. He fucking nailed his role. And he was my favourite character in the movie. "Dorky chicks like you turn me on too!"
Reminds me of when Ennio Morricone got a razzie for his soundtrack of The Thing. People can be really, really dumb at times, more often than you'd like to see, really.
The director, Raja Gosnell, wanted a real-life couple to play Daphne and Fred. His first choice was Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. Prinze Jr. didn't originally want to do the movie because he felt it wouldn't live up to the Scooby cartoons, but Gellar talked him into it. This was the last Scooby-Doo project franchise to be created and produced by both William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Hanna died on March 22, 2001. After filming was completed, Freddie Prinze Jr. had to shave his head, because the bleach ruined his hair. Sarah Michelle Gellar hated wearing Daphne's purple go-go boots and would change into comfy sneakers whenever she was able. Freddie Prinze Jr. hated wearing the trademark ascot Fred usually wore in the original cartoons. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jennifer Aniston were considered for the role of Daphne. One of the few Scooby-Doo films to reveal the real first names of Scooby and Shaggy as, respectively, Scoobert and Norville. Frank Welker, who has voiced Freddy Jones in all the Scooby-Doo cartoons, provides his voice to one of the evil creatures in this movie. From 2002 Welker has also taken on the job of voicing Scooby-Doo. Despite the movie poster of the gang being in front of the shadow of the Luna Ghost the villain only appears in the first few minutes of the film. This is because the Luna Ghost was originally intended to be the main antagonist in an early draft of the script. In reality, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar are married, having had two children together. Ironically, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is blonde, portrayed the red-haired Daphne, while Isla Fisher, who is redheaded, portrayed the blonde Mary Jane. Linda Cardellini and Isla Fisher were fans of the cartoon before they were cast in the film. The very last Hanna-Barbera live-action movie. Originally, Scrappy Doo was not going to be the main villain. At the end of the film, Old Man Smithers aka "the Luna Ghost" from the beginning of the movie was going to be behind the event of the film. Throughout the film, there are hints that Mr. Mondavarious is actually Scrappy. He is seen scratching behind his ear as if he had fleas. His office also has bookends in the shape of dog heads and a carved dog head statue. Though James Gunn hasn't entirely disowned the film, he has expressed regret in making Scrappy the main villain of the film, after receiving some backlash from the character's fans. James Gunn's original screenplay had the villain finally revealed as actor Don Knotts, a payoff to Fred's line referring to Scooby's mistake at his Christmas party. The kitchen in the Spooky Island Castle where Shaggy and Scooby have their burp/fart competition is the same kitchen in which the brainwashing training video was filmed. This explains why there is a camera in the kitchen and Shaggy says "lights, camera, action. Huh Scoob" when he notices it.
Love both of the live-action Scooby-Doo movies (nostalgia influencing my opinion heavily but what can I say, I grew up with them). My favourite character is Daphne, but I love the whole gang. Scooby has been a huge part of my life and I just love it to bits (bar a few exceptions like Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue). Still watch every TV show and DTV as they are released. I agree with others that you should check out Mystery Incorporated if you haven't yet, it's my favourite series and is just brilliant.
It used to be Daphne because I wanted to be her, especially after she became less of a damsel in distress. She is still my favorite, but Velma has found herself up there due to her sassiness, underappreciation, and smarts. She really is a role model for younger girls and Daphne slowly is becoming one too.
Fred's narcissism and ego were never the problem for me in this movie. His stupidity is my problem with his character. The original Fred was not stupid. He was the second smartest in their group, and a very competent leader. The point where we start getting dumb Fred is A Pup Named Scooby Doo, where Freddy is portrayed as a dumb kid who believes in any conspiracy theory out there. It was charming for that, and you could believe that he grows out of that later. Then Scooby shows began making adult Freddy that dumb, and dumber, and the movie Fred (at least in the first one, since he's more self-aware in the sequel) is one of the dumbest Freds we've gotten.
Anyone who doesnt like the live action versions of scooby doo can fight me!! These movies make me so nostalgic and i dont care if im 5 20 or 80 years old ill probably watch them again and again

I still adore the live action just because of the inherent goofiness and disfunctionality of a cartoon being produced in a real world setting, it doesn’t take itself seriously and so is perfect for its target audience ( and me a 17 year old that adores cliche monster flics ))
"Do not go into that spooky [ISLAND] castle"
Knowing the James Gunn stuff now, I am starting to think there might be a liiiiitle bit of ADR going on there.
My favorite character is definitely shaggy. I think out of all the characters he's more relatable and the way they expand his character in mystery incorporated only made me like him more.
Friends don't quit
He's also god incarnate
Shaggy, when i was younger, was my childhood hero. It was always his nonchalant but over the top sense of humor that made me the sarcastic prick i am today
I wonder if Lillard is still playing shaggy.
If he is, good for him.
Samuel Solomon
He is indeed, he took over once Shaggy's old voice actor passed away.
I know he did voice Shaggy in a few of the direct DVD movies and if I'm not mistaken TV series.
Favorite character: Daphne in later seasons as she actually became a well rounded integral part of the team, instead of the danger proned eye candy ginger ditz of the first seasons.
i’ve always felt like this is the worst movie with the best performances from all of its lead actors
How about Linda Cardellini she tries to do velma's voice and nails it in my opinion but so did Matthew Lillard he was perfect.
Dillon Ohlemiller Freddie, Michelle and Linda were all great where the fuck are you getting the idea that Matthew was the only one trying?
the whole cast was pefect.
Your accent is wonderful I love it
I think it's either a Northern Irish accent or Scottish and it's driving me insane
It's a Northern Irish accent, though I barely notice because it's the kind of accent I hear day-to-day so it's very familiar to me at home
I legitimately love the first movie, so glad somebody recognised it in some way finally
Yes because we didn't realise we where in the presence of a God
@ He's referencing the Ultra Instinct Shaggy meme.
You didn't tell me to stay safe, thumbs down until this injustice is rectified.
How about a personal stay safe?
Stay safe!
Ryan Hollinger
Thanks homes, you as well.
I adore the live actions movie, is it purely fueled by my nostalgia and love of the scooby doo show, yes, but let me just say there is no other movies like them, and that’s why I like them so much!
The live action one was my childhood
Daphne was always my favorite but she really became a favorite after she finally learned how to throw hands 😂 and Shaggy is a close second being a fellow stoner. 😂
Finally, someone is defending the flick
Honestly, I think they were both good. They picked just the right actors to embody each character (also the fact that Fred and Daphne are married IRL is GREAT) and the special effects for the monsters in the second one were badass! The older I get, the more I enjoy them!
Velma was always my favorite because shes mature, smart, and pretty cute in pretty much every adaptation of her
Including Wendy Corduroy from Gravity falls.
Your accent is perfect for watching at X0.25 speed especially at 0:38
I love and hate you for discovering this.
Dude I just bought that same desk. I love It! Plenty of room for my dumb anime statues.
steviewylde haha 😅❤
steviewylde how much is it and what's the size looks pretty nice and plenty of space
NinjaTyler m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/50219044/
steviewylde wow that's a surprisingly good price for it
This will always be one of my all time favourite family films, maybe that's just nostalgia talking but i'll always stand by that, a film that can entertain ANY demographic is special in my books, shame we only got 2 of these films really
How can it be that you are taking a movie that I already accepted into my heart as a pile of crap and are now making me doubt myself into thinking it's a masterpiece of satire and subtlety?
because I'm the ultimate bullshitter.
Shaggy was using 0.05% of his power during this movie
One thing that I love about these movies is the look of them. They look visually gorgeous.
The second one is a masterpiece.
Hold on.
Daphne and Velma kissing was stolen from us?
My happiness is gone forever.
that would’ve been heralded as the greatest lgbtq+ representation moment of the early 2000’s
Hm, you have made me appreciate that film a little more now :)
shaggy and velma are my favourite characters because i see myself in both of them, i’m a dorky know-it-all who is a huge coward (shoutout to my anxiety) and eats way too much.
one reason i love the mystery inc. series so much is how much more they fleshed out velma, which made her that much more relatable to me
I really liked this video! I have always loved the first scooby-doo movie and nobody ever seems to agree with me! Spot on about Shaggy's actor, he is terrific. I had no idea the same guy that wrote Guardians wrote this movie, that's awesome. Good stuff man
It's refreshing seeing a video actually backing up this movie, unlike the Nostalgia Critic review of this movie.

Ryan Hollinger Daphne and Velma where supposed to kiss??? I WAS ROBBED
You are seriously the best! Thank you.
Also, have you seen Be Cool, Scooby-Doo, if so what'd you think of it?
the FREDDE desk is well fitting for the video, and once again this channel makes something great!
@@J1283-s1k what the fuck? That's the dumbest shit I've ever heard. Award ceremonies are the worst.
@@niallreid7664 My thoughts exactly!
Angel Dynamite or Sheriff Bronson Stone from Mystery Inc.
I've always liked Daphne very much. But I don't really know why.
I didn't realise till today that the actress who played Velma is the same one who played hawkeyes wife in avengers age of ultron
By making this you’re the hero this city doesn’t need now, but the one that it deserves
I unironically adore the first live action Scooby Doo movie and rematch it all the time.
Woo-Hoo 200k Subs!!! Been loving your content lately. Notifications are on!
Kellen Johnson roo hoo
When he gets a million I think I'll cry.
This movie came out when I was 7 loved it then, still love it now, its so strangely made it's great
Velma as my favorite character. Just loved everything about her.
Watching this video made me realize why 5 year old me rejected this film in favor of the second film. It all makes sense now.
Yames exactly because when I was younger I thought the second movie was better
Speak for yourself, I thought the Tar Monster was just the coolest thing since Legos
Anyone who doesnt like the live action versions of scooby doo can fight me!! These movies make me so nostalgic and i dont care if im 5 20 or 80 years old ill probably watch them again and again
Same! I’ll show it to my future kids (hopefully!
Shaggy because he can destroy god with 1% of his power
The casting is honestly so good the entire gang is perfect for the roles
