Nice landing (LFBE) Pierre, as usual. Nice long trip too. (But not for a VL3. ; ) Very cool trip & vid: Cirrus Jet, LFBY, and Biarritz is absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for the low pass & the view. I liked that, but yes: CAUTION, WAKE TURBULENCE! No kidding… I’m curious about a couple of things though: I noticed @ LFBE you had a slight gusty condition on landing. (≈7.5 kt - 11.3 kt crosswind from the Right, and ≈2.7 kt - 4.2 kt headwind) Now when I have a gust factor, I’ve been taught to increase my normal approach speed by half that number. e.g. In this case it’s only 4 kts, so I would increase my “normal approach speed” 2 kts. Is that what you normally do? Also, I got the impression that Dax is a Military field, but my info shows it open to the Public. ??
Hello Couz! Once again, thank you for your detailed analysis of my flight :-) Yes, Biarritz airport is sumptuous, but so is the whole region! I'd like to go back there next year. Regarding the wind variations in Bergerac: 4 kt difference between minimum and maximum, I don't consider that as gusts. It's actually quite constant :-) I use the same theory, increasing the speed by half of the gusts, but only when the gusts are of the order of 10 kt. In any case, the VL3 is too light. Hoping to aim for a speed 2 kt higher is an illusion. I'm not that precise. But the Bergerac runway is huge, so I had plenty of time to correct if necessary :-) That's the advantage of being used to 300 metre runways. And about Dax: you're right, it's a military airfield. It's home to the French army's helicopter flight school and a small civilian club. My co-pilot of the day belongs to the Belgian Navy, he did ENJJPT (Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program), the jet pilot school in Texas, before doing the helicopter training at Dax, in order to join the helicopter fleet of the Belgian Navy. While at Dax, he flew the FK9 at the civilian club. That's how he got the authorisation for my VL3 :-)
Thank you for such a detailed response Pierre! You bring up very good realistic points re: the wind. It's true, I'm analyzing that by text book theory. LOL And yes, you've got great experience flying out of EBBY! Though, I'm assuming the grass helps a little. Yeah, I've noticed you have some very capable co-pilots, but I have to admit, it's also entertaining to see pax, like some of the ones from your "ULM VL3 BEST OF #4" video. ; ) Definitely gorgeous in that area. I hope to be flying around there at some point!@@pierreleparrain
Magnifique !
