The problem with practicing any track solo is it never accounts for the other 11 players. No matter how good you are, items can and will mess you up. Not to mention someone just slamming into you at the wrong moment. Anyone who ends up sweeping usually gets coins early and then gets a significant lead while no one gets blue shells. Which is what Okayu did and just dominated in team C.
I'd like to argue that practicing solo time trials helps you learn the courses...but as you implied, time trials doesn't account for all the shenanigans that happen in a real race. Of course, Bae was fighting an uphill battle anyway (as she got grouped with Suichan, Mio-mama, Mikochi, Lui-nee, and Biboo).
You need to know the track to perfectly go far away possible when you are first to have enough advantage even when they hit you with the blue shell, so yes you need to practice the courses AND after that practice multiplayer.
I think the issue is that no one learns how to use items. As in, none of the people who stayed in the "pack" would use items before reaching another item box, which lowers the probability of blue shells showing up. Mk8 already has a blue shell that rarely appears, and 1st place can usually get a horn to counter it, so the fact that most of the girls didn't use items enough really made it easy for 1st place to stay in 1st. Seeing some players hold on to a green shell and a coin in their slots while in 5th place hurt my soul lmao, get rid of that junk and roll for better items!

Yeah, it was a bad idea to only do time trials on just a few courses, it would have been better to race against chat and get used to the race chaos than getting used to play on her own without all the hazards. Shortcuts, you learn those later

im pleasantly suprised that out of CHADcast Calliope Mori turned out with the best results. Granted her only real competition was Okayu and Kronii of all people.
This is why time trials might be ok to get you familiar with the course but it's definitely not good for practising actual races. No opponent interference and no items is not the ideal condition you will be in when you race other players.
