Very sad; even though John Sr. should be commended for keeping the act alive, there is a distinct difference between father and son--and the Swing era is unrelated to this.
This is my mom song. She's currently in a nursing home. She said "hold that tiger," in the street once at The Apollo Theatre. 6/29-6/30/19. 5:30 a.m 👑💒🌟🙌👸😊📹📷🎥🌈💎❤💍🔥🐞🌟🙌🙌🙌🙌💃🙌🙌🙌🚘🙌🙌🙌
This is just amazing. Remember when musicians had this kind of talent and ability? There are many great artists, but the best can stand in front of a microphone with auto tune, filters, and sound engineers, and create things like this.
This song was featured in “The Big Broadcast” in 1932 with newcomer Bing Crosby in his film debut. The Mills Brothers was the very first male vocal group to brought into new heights, and doo-wop was long years away. To be honest, as a doo-wop fan, the Mills Brothers were great during that time. There was no rock & roll in 1932, it has four guys and a guitar. And that’s it. And of course, street corner harmonies didn’t exist in 1932, remember the barbershop quartet? That was a big deal back in the 1920’s and 1930’s.
Absolutely 🤗🤗! They also were a huge influence on the vocal groups who followed to the present. Their horn imitations are a direct precursor to beat boxing (hip hop).
Gotta love a guy who imitates a muted trumpet... and gets away with it. Only in the 1930's could anyone--much less a talented group like the Mills Brothers--remotely get away with it.
Talk about prototypes for close harmony vocal groups; these four guys predate most every Doo Wop and early rock group as well as the boy bands of the present.
They kinda worked as two units.... Donald and Herbert, and Harry and John Jr. Harry said in an interview a couple years before he died that even forty years later and blind himself, he could still see John Jr to his left, playing the guitar
In the 1970's the Mills Brothers were largely relegated to daytime TV appearances as well as awards shows and telethons (the younger generation of mostly middle of the road soft rock stars had pretty much taken over the new variety shows by this time anyway); the largely B- pictures they appeared in were rarely shown on television. Only the fellow big band swing old-timer's like Mike Douglas, Dinah Shore, and Merv Griffin showcased them anything like properly.
I saw a picture of the actual record. It said: "Four boys and a guitar" Wow... that is all they needed to make beautiful music. Lets see Lady Goo-Goo-Gaa-Gaa try that.
At 0:17 the manual trumpet guy is mean muggin' the guitar player so hard because he thinks he purposefully didn't take his suggestion for a better riff and is trying to read him.

Hand trumpeting is a lost art.
Most people really blow at it.

The brother playing the guitar died just 4 years after this performance.

No way 😱😭
This is a great rendition of an old favorite. Too bad not that many people know about it. What a wonderful group.
their look is smooth and their sound is hot!
Trickeration Absolutely!
Since I've played Mafia game, I'm a jazz fanatic :)
Мафия зацепила нас обоих дружище, меня только перетянуло в блюз))) эх, 2002 год. Мои 14 лет, школа.. Mafia, Max Payne, gta 3, gta Vice City.

When I first played Mafia and heard them, I thought they were singing to the music. It turns out they themselves are music.
Smashing cars with a baseball bat to this song was priceless.

America Had Talent.
Today they'd be booed off Showtime At the Apollo, much less America's Got Talent or The Voice.
America also spoke English!
We still have it, its just not just not in the spotlight . Ya gotta dig for it.
This is just amazing. Remember when musicians had this kind of talent and ability?

Yep technology make artists lazy now new pop sucks (not all)
Know I don't. This was 1931, Wilford Brimley. And it stinks.
there's always comments like this 😂

"Just like" isn't the same as "exactly like".
That, ladies and gentlemen, is talent.
He plays his hands like a bugle?? Serious talent.
Yah im wondering how he does that, how he did that
a very catchy tune, hahaha, my tongue would fall out or run away trying to do that. Lol
This is beyond fabulous.

Another brother imitated the trombone in perfect pitch!
They didn't need a "swing" band the could sound just like one without the instruments , just amazing talent

vocal quartets went back to the 19th century - old sheet music from the 1920s often advertises whole catalogs of quartet music.

Donald Mills (2nd from left), was 16-17 here.
Always a kick to see this influential group in what might as well be their baby pictures; not for nothing were they called "Four boys and a Guitar".
What a great song and a great live performance

Um grande artista, época marcante
They really DO sound like trumpets, trombones, and a tuba--with a guitar added for good measure.
They kinda worked as two units.... Donald and Herbert, and Harry and John Jr.
Harry said in an interview a couple years before he died that even forty years later and blind himself, he could still see John Jr to his left, playing the guitar

I hate that this was slightly sped up from the original song. It's already extremely impressive to scat that quickly and much harder than it looks.
