What happened with the explosion was that, after the run-through, Keith was unhappy with the size of the explosion, so he took the stage hand who was responsible for the pyrotechnics down the pub and got him drunk. When they got back, Keith talked him into putting a LOT more explosive material into the bass drum than he should have, so nobody was prepared for the size of the blast (not even Keith, who fell down into front of the drum riser... Pete thought he might have been dead for a moment). Bette Davis, who was also a guest on the show, was in the wings, and when the blast happened, she fainted and Dick Smothers had to catch her.
Uppers or speed was in wide use by the British youth. In high enough doses it can make one stutter. Roger said in an interview that he was mimicking the speed freaks. PJ

This is my favorite Who song too - this and "The Kids Are Alright". I like their earlier stuff more than their later stuff. John Entwhistle's nick name was "Thunder Fingers". And you can see why.

Only Keith knew of the impending explosion, however, the inebriated sloppy stage hand used waaaay to much explosives, so NOBODY knew how BIG an explosion was coming. Look closely at the clip… Pete’s hair caught fire, and, it damaged his hearing, which affected Pete greatly decades later. ✌️

I've read a lot about the band and as I understand it, if their rock opera "Tommy" and the subsequent tours hadn't been so successful, they would have possibly had to seek bankruptcy protection. As it happened, "Tommy" made them all millionaires.

Check out the video for their lone Top Ten USA hit, "I Can See for Miles," which features some amazing Moon drumming. The other great stuttering track, "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by BTO, was the result of a joke during the recording the demo and they eventually were persuaded to keep to keep it in the actual recording.

So I actually heard the story on SiriusXM about the stuttering. Roger Daltrey has a brother who stuttered. One day they made a bet that The Who couldn’t make a popular song with stuttering in it. It was all for a bet.

The Who did the guitar and drums destruction originally, maybe Screaming Jay Hawkins did it in the fifties, not sure. Hendrix copied it a couple years later but this was a Who trademark in their early years. Keith Moon still the greatest rock drummer ever. Close second is Ginger Baker and Dino Danelli

My Generation's Live at Leeds version is EPIC. A 15 minute medley with one bangin' riff after another. The raw power and energy is incredible.
