In Mexico, our history lessons are (or used to be when I studied) divided into universal history (which begins with the Stone age, Bronze age and so on until the modern era) and Mexican history, which spans pre-Colombian civilisations (from the "mother" culture of the Olmec to the fall of the Aztec empire), the colonial period and independent Mexico. In that sense, we are very much aware of that past and there's a lot of emphasis and pride on all the positive things that those indigenous cultures gave to the world, including staple crops like maize, avocados, tomatoes among many more, chocolate, turkeys, chihuahuas, xolo dogs, rubber, tons of gold and silver, etc. (and even a little back punch to the Conquistadors in the form of syphilis). This is not to say that there is no discrimination or racism against indigenous populations, which still is very prevalent, but the US and Canada should give more recognition to the millions of people that have inhabited those lands for centuries prior to Columbus' voyage.

I have a decades long troubled heart for the indigenous peoples. My mother's paternal heritage dates back to 1637 (from France); her maternal heritage dates back to the 1700s (from Ireland) the family settled in Perry County in 1831 and there the family stayed. One of my ancestors was horribly troubled by our nation's treatment of the Native Americans in our region and he stepped in to serve as a spokesman for themnwith the Nureau of Indian Affairs. He became friends with couple of Indian Chirfs. I'm not sure if this was whennthe Brashears were still black in Maryland, where the family settled upon leaving Virginia ,(family home was built in 1651) or once settled in Kentucky. I have always felt good knowing my family cared and beyond just caring tried to help.

We don't call Europeans with heritage from Europe "Native Europeans" they're just European. We do call Americans with American heritage "Native Americans". We don't call Caucasian Americans "non-native Americans". But why is that? May seem like a childish question, but it's pretty obvious when actually verbalized. One of my ancestors was horribly troubled by our nation's treatment of the Native Americans in our region and he stepped in to serve as a spokesman for themnwith the Nureau of Indian Affairs. He became friends with couple of Indian Chirfs. I'm not sure if this was whennthe Brashears were still black in Maryland, where the family settled upon leaving Virginia ,(family home was built in 1651) or once settled in Kentucky. I have always felt good knowing my family cared and beyond just caring tried to help.

Buffy Sainte-Marie said this in an interview she gave the CBC in the 1960's. Now this generation is middle aged. WE WANT TO GO BACK HOME! WE EUROPEANS ARE INDIGENOUS TO OUR EUROPEAN NATIONS AND WE ARE TERRIBLY HOMESICK. Make America Great Again, build the wall, and restore the European homelands and our spirits, after this horrific deed. We should never have come here.

I'd have a lot more respect for a person that stands with their beliefs, daytime protesters don't impress people with moral convictions.

Let's all take some time out of our day to think about the reason that that category of person group is called "indigenous" and not just "people".
We don't call Europeans with heritage from Europe "Native Europeans" they're just European. We do call Americans with American heritage "Native Americans". We don't call Caucasian Americans "non-native Americans". But why is that? May seem like a childish question, but it's pretty obvious when actually verbalized. The settler colonizing population intentionally displaced, ousted, and replaced the native people of a massive area,slaughtering millions, on an order rivaling the Holocaust. They became the dominant people group in an area.
And some of them have the gall to call themselves "legacy Americans".

The people who respected the land and did not want to create an evil empire in Europe were killed thousands of years ago. Many revolutions by the people have been tried since then to bring people power back. It has taken hundreds of years for the people to be treated equally amongst the now remaining differences of cultures, beliefs and teachings.
