Epiphone Valve Junior - KILLER with Punchy Speakers!

- I'm playing a cheap Epiphone Valve Junior tube amp though a Fender 4x10 cab with JBL E110 and eminence Blue Horse Shoe speakers. This amp is very round sounding so it sounds amazing with punchy and bright speakers like these JBLs for instance. I'm using a Squier Affinity Telecaster.

You deserve way more subscribers than you currently have. If the topic of RUclips comes up when I'm talking to another guitar player, I always mention you. You're one of the great hidden gems of the RUclips guitar community.
Thanks my friend! Makes my day to hear that
I was just thinking that before I read your comment. Agreed.
Mee too. Often i mention johan to others guitarists 😊
Inspiring for all of us Valve Jr. owners out there.
Glad to hear it! Cheers
I`v wondered about these Valve juniors for a while , holds up suprisingly well. Perfect entry level amp . And a whole lotta tone for the money .
Cheers Gary!
Great that you pulled out this little gem of yours and paired it with complementing speakers and guitar, you're the best! Clearly shows you don't have to own expensive gear (except the speakers here and not that there's something bad about expensive gear) to sound good and that tone is in your fingers! 😁 Tasteful playing included as usual! That's what I love about your channel, including a strong vintage vibe.
They are a hidden gem . Really. Incredible tone and response. I had mine thru a single 1-12'' Marshall cab. A friend loved it so much he bought it from me at a $$$ bonus. Great one Johan..
Thanks Buddy!
My first tube amp, got the head and cab for $249 brand new. Get it going in an open space and it sounds fantastic.
I had one too. The mods for these make them even better. Cheers!
Man I played one of these for a while at a shop today thru a newer vertical Marshall 2x12. Incredibly dynamic , punchy and detailed !!
Hi Johan... I like your clips a lot because of the focus on amps and cab (80% of the tone from my experience). But frankly speaking, in your hands, every amp sound amazing ! you have the right mojo ! I would like to ear in your test my head: Jet City JCA 20H (soldano design). Keep on making movies , please !
Thanks! Really glad to hear that! I’ll check out the Jet City first chance.
I ordered one. It was in a huge cabinet with a 12" Speaker such a loud sound, always musically
I love this heavy weight Amp ❤
The designer of this amp went on to design the Crate Blackheart amps which are little hidden gems themselves. The BH5H head was a great pedal platform and sounded sweet cranked with the eminence speaker they designed for it
Crate? Really? wow that's cool i never hear anybody say anything good about Crate….I was told if crate was great they wouldn't be called crate lol…..🤷♂
@@brianwarner308 Thats EXACTLY why they failed in the market. Nobody wanted the Blackheart amps because they had that Crate name attached to them. They sold very poorly despite being very good sounding amps that were above Crate's normal build quality.
Interesting, I’ll see if I can find one of those
Indeed ! Check out the Blackheart 15 watt "Handsome Devil" amp - It has almost the exact same Layout - identical to the Marshall SV 20 Amp !
Damn I've been eyeing them some time ago but didn't pull the trigger in the end... Would love to hear them in a shootout against similar ballpark amps or just alone, played by Johan!
Sounds so good, and great playing! 🙌🏼
My first amp was the Epiphone valve special. With an eq pedal infront it definitely did the job.
Excellent playing, very inspiring.
That riff @3:38 is killer. You should do a full album showcasing your riffs and various amps. I'd buy that all day long.
you would have a ton of em after a week….
that riff was killer tho
Thanks! Makes my day to hear that!
johan the secret stoner rock master
15 songs, each with title either amp or (and) guitar and I am buying 5pcs for my friends as well 👍
The Squier sounds fab. Amazing value for money.
Thanks Eddie, yeah that’s probably the best value for money I have ever come across
yes these are as good as I remember, a friend of mine had one years ago and I liked it a lot.
Thanks Ben
Hi, Johan!
Glad to see you, in the night its still good! The amp is good for beginners, and I never had a normal Epi as an amp, but its interesting!
See you!
S.
Thanks man!
In my Valve Junior i've replaced the preamp 12AX7 with a 12AT7 and it's much more usable: instead of crunching hard since 12 o'clock there's a palette of different sounds until the end of the range. Don't forget it's an A Class amp, so not A/B with different harmonics.
That squire is nice, just got a classic vibe and love it, for the money it’s pretty bad ass 👌
Thanks! Actually I was planing to test mine soon (in storage since I bought it new due to many circumstances taking me elsewhere). So I'll follow your suggestion 😎, and among the speakers I'll use I'll include the brightest one I have, a Celestion Century (regular version), and my only shrill Greenback.
Cool! I think that could work beautifully. Cheers
Nice playing and really good informative on you channel. I picked up a little giant 3/5 watt Blackheart amp. I have the head only, no speakers, I really liked your 10 inch vintage speaker comparison, but I also liked the mojo 12 speakers you demonstrated. In this video and the other one, you are using this amp you are playing thru a 4x12 cabinet. Are there major tone differences in pushing 5 watts thru 4x10, 4x12 or 1x12, 1x10 cabinet?
Sounds great with that cab!
Thanks!
ive bought and sold a few of these over the years and i always end up picking one back up at some point. cutting JP1 is essential on these imo, makes it sound so much better (and they already sound great stock)
You show everyone how to do it! sound ! And sounded again. Unbelievable how this Affinty Telecaster sounds with your fingers. i love your channel Everything you do makes sense. Does your Squier have ceramic pickups? Sounds so cool!
Thanks! Makes my day to hear that. The Squier has the stock pickups
That's a great little amp, I have one (kind of forgot about it) and now thanks to you Johan, I'll go and run it throgh a 4 x12 or maybe a 2 x12 with greenbacks!
Thanks! I think they work better with punchier speakers like most 10 inch speakers or JBLs. It’s a bit to round for greenbacks I think
Thanks Johan! maybe v30s? I don't have the 10 inch ones.
Had a modded on for years and really really liked that amp. I kind of regret selling it.
I have mine plugged into an “Ampro” pa speaker from the 40-50’s and it sounds glorious.
Interesting!
Made awesome by the great cab!
Yeah the cab and speakers are instrumental indeed
Mine sits in tandem with my Fender Greta, both happy to drive a 2 x 12 Creamback, or a single 15" for surreal "in the pub" sounds.
That squire sounds amazing.
Thanks Eduard!
Awesome! Now do the Blackheart little giant! Recently got one, put a Telefunken EL84 in the power and GE 12AX7 in the pre. Wow this thing roars! Even the original Eminence design speaker is great.
Thanks! I’ll look for one!
I used to gig with a little giant, and I don't think I've ever been complimented more on my tone than when I played that little 5 watter.
@@Artress357 It's truly a hidden gem. They go for ridiculously low prices on the used market.
Ok Johan, show me one instance where you made a guitar or amp sound bad. I challenge you. Lol you are a gem of a guitarist and a refuge and inspiration.
Thanks my friend! 🙂
A one knob amp, amazing. Reminds me of the glorious and portable Pignose 7-100!
Up next, a no knob amp, and a no knob guitar to match.
😆
Hey Johan, I was so impressed by this that I found one yesterday locally (literally the other side of town a guy was selling one) today all day playing it through an 8 inch speaker of a tiny transistor Fender thing (I got given it and it sounded bad but the speaker is great)
Maybe I do a quick demo on my channel later in the week. Cheers & Let's Go ( you should do a Lets Go T Shirt)
With a Plexi and LP on it! 😉
Oh and a pulsonic greenback should have its place there, too!
I think you sell me on more gear than any advertisement and you aren't even aiming to do so. Great stuff, interesting find!
Thanks, glad you like it!
Sounds nice! For recording, in general, you prefere open bacj or closed back? 1x12? 2x12? thanks for your job Johan!
If you ever get your hands on a Greer Mini Chief try one out. You'll love it.
It's amazing what 1w can do! Can't remember, have you ever tried a Blackstar HT5? I have one of those and it does hot rodded Marshall tones really well. God bless and rock on 👍😎🎸
Yeah I did and I really liked it! Cheers!
Ive seen mods for these that convert them into a little 5 watt Plexi. Great tones as always Johan, inspiring to us players who have cheaper gear but want good sounds.
Thanks, I’m glad to hear that!
The tone alchemist is at it again :)
Love the feel in that last riff when you pick with your thumb. The JBL is a tall order to push for the valve junior, how does it handle a single greenback, would that contribute to a more controlled breakup?
Thanks! Maybe a really bright new greenback could work, but try a Jensen P10R or an Eminence blue horse shoe, those marry really well with this amp too.
@@JohanSegeborn I would if i could :)
To many amps as it is so no valve jr for me.
The essence of my accumulated knowledge, after following your channel since back in the day: The speaker is the most significant eq in the signal chain. Therefore it is necessary to have more speakers than amps :)
Love your Squier Affinity. Did you keep it original?
Those speakers can make anything sound good 😂. Thanks Johan !
Thanks! Cheers
The prices have been going up on there the last few years. I almost snagged one just to mod. It would be cool to A-B with my Marshall Class 5. Cheers!
Well done!!
Thanks Glen!
Hey Johan! It’s your Norwegian buddy from North Dakota again …😜 So I bought one of these off a guy a few weeks ago for a hundred bucks , I asked him why he was selling it and if anything was wrong ….. he said nope, it just sounds like junk …so I asked what he was running it through to which he replied , a Fender frontman 15 watt practice amp !! 😐🫨🙄😆😂🤷🏻♂️ so I brought it home and I run it through my MG 4x12 which I’ve put ehx speakers in and it sounds great!! Takes pedals like a champ !! 👌🏼
Beautiful my friend....
Thanks my friend
A bunch of tone for one knob. Does tele clean tones very well. Might need a pedal for dirt. Cheers From Hawaii Johan!
Yeah it would benefit from a tube screamer I think. Cheers!
It would be cool if you did a challenge taking a handful of notoriously "bad" amps and seeing what kind of usable tones you can get out of them.
Which would be your bottom 5 bad amps?
@@JohanSegeborn Probably a Crate, some more solid state Peaveys, maybe some Line 6 modeling amps, probably any amp below $400 people would consider to be not a "real" amp. With the way you mic things up and use your API everything sounds great!! Thanks for the great videos!
@@mrbuttons1243 bugera would like to know your location
@@gnoogie Yeah! That would be another good one.
i'm thinking buying one and do a little mods, it cuolb be flabby on bass
I like how he's playing a squire with all those mean ass Marshall's behind him 😏 I love this guy
Great sound Johan! Please share your settings 😂
😂 Cheers
did samenwith bugera 5 watt combo used 2x12 greenback cab.. 90% of tone in the soeaker apparently
Yeah it’s crucial to combine amps with the right speakers.
Let's go
Cheers Darrell!
Big fan of these amps! I have two. One modded, one stock. Try swapping the preamp tube with a 12AT7. Greatly reduces the volume so you can crank it and get great tones.
Interesting, I’m gonna try that!
I have one for making noise with and one that I'm looking to sell. I'd sell both if the price is right.
Thanks Johan ! Tele rule ;-))
Thanks! Yeah I gravitate more and more to Teles
sounds great.
although i believe you could play a wet spaghetti strand through a kazoo, and it'd sound like rock'n'roll.
😆 Thanks my friend
Mind making a video on how you are recording?
Yeah I’d be glad to. I did one about 5 years ago but I have changed setup a bit since then. I think recording is actually a lot about playing to pick the strings in a way that doesn’t sound harsh and creates contrast.
Cheap guitar. Cheap amp. Great sound!
Thanks, yeah insane bang for the buck
I wanted to get a Valve Jr but the interface was too busy and confusing. Any amp that needs that many knobs can't be any good! What are you hiding behind that wall of complex circuitry, Epiphone?!
😂
I own a Valve Senior 20W.
Cool! Have never tried those
@@JohanSegeborn They aren't a bad amp, but a bit dark sounding, along with a rather dark reverb!
So you're plugged into something else I see. How does that relate to the Valve Jr.? There's no explanation in the description.
Where's the reverb coming from?
Post processing in Cubase
Is this a class A amp ?
Nah. You are much better off with a VHT Special 6. And that beats a Marshall 5 by a mile..
Impossible. Everyone “knows” these amps were trash.
