Fishing the Sacramento river with live baits was all about the tides.Out going tides were tough to fish. The slower the tide the better. It took a couple trips to figure this out but it paid off. The slower the better. Great video!

@@dannyneihart1821 thanks for the info Danny. It’s crazy how different fish behave in different bodies of water, most times incoming is best, but there are plenty of places where outgoing is best. We fished the Bonner bridge ALOT goin back many years and the outgoing was killer. Just fish after fish, it slowed way down at slack and then we couldn’t BUY a bite on the incoming. That bridge is in a bottleneck with a giant shallow bay further inshore. The outgoing pulled all kinds of critters out of the bay and right to my boat under the bridge. I can’t believe that bridge still stands. That is the most gnarly rip I’ve ever seen. You can see the pilings are half the diameter below the water level.

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS We were anchored up in @ 30 ft. of water. During the faster tide the fish were in mid column. As the tide slowed they dropped to the bottom. These were spring migrating fish.

Hey, love the videos, was looking at rods that you helped designed, which one for doing 30/30 lb test line and which one for spoons and bucktails. Loved video on using topo map to pick areas to hit on a lake

Ok, I was not aware of the braid as a no go. I've got my 4 striper rods rigged with braid, going to have to remove that. So I'm fishing a reservoir with good size fish, what line would you suggest and leader type and weight also? Thanks

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

You’re not alone brother. I see countless people using braid for live and cut bait. Braid is great for casting artificials, you can feel every little tick on the end of your line, unfortunately the sensitivity goes both ways. If you can feel the fish, it can feel you back and drop the bait too quickly to set the hook. My rule of thumb: 1 when rod is in a holder at strike use mono, by the time the fish takes all of the stretch out of the line it’s too late. They never felt the rod tip and got the whole bait down the hatch.
2 when rod is in your hand at strike you can use braid if you wish, for added sensitivity. Mainly to cast plugs or plastics. They don’t need to swallow lures to get hooked, and you can set the hook as soon as you feel the bite, immediately. I love Berkely Pro Spec, HOWEVER, I’ve been experimenting with Reaction brand lines on Amazon going on 3 years now. It’s awesome and 1/3 the price of big brands. It feels great, super soft and stretchy with near NO memory at all. I use the 30lb mono for everything baitwise. 30lb braid for spinning reals with lures and 50lb braid for jigging and Baitcasters. This code will get you another 15% off too. Don’t feel obligated though, go with your gut, but I know you’ll LOVE their lines.

Save your $ and don't waiste that braid. I think he is overly preachy on the no braid. I do the same thing and get tons of huge striper on big bait, locked up in the rod holder both chunk and live. The most important part of the equation for circle hooks and hookup ratio is the rod. Like 95% the rod and the line only adds to that a fraction. Mono may compensate a tad bit if your rod is too stiff. With the right rod the line won't matter that much for hookups, i find the lack of stretch in combination with soft rods actually helps bury the barb better and i also keep a firm drag for the bite as well. Braid I will say you want to watch drag tension on a short line when a big fish is next to the boat, dont hurt to loosen slightly at that point. I also use striper stealth rods and run a little heavier than he does using mostly the heavy action with braid and I'll put my hookup ratio vs anyone. Moral of the story is you'll be just fine with the braid

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Thank you, I appreciate you both! It's great to see people helping one another. I will say i tried to purchase the striper stealth rods but they were not available so I went a different route. I picked up 4 Ugly Stik Carbon Inshore Spinning Rods with medium power extra fast tips. I have yet to try them out, it's been a very busy summer and I'm still dealing with a rod mount issue on my boat. I'll get it figured out soon and be on the water but thank you so much for all the advice. Oh and thank you for the code, I actually do use their braid line but will be buying some mono now. :)

@@6atlantis i really like 7’6”. It’s what my Striper Stealth rods are and they are perfect for live bait Stripers. In fact I can’t find a rod for that price anywhere which is why I got involved with designing. There is a strange gap in the fishing rod industry. You can get backbone OR you can get a super soft tip, but you need to spend $300+ to get both. Soft tip is the most important thing in live bait fishing. There’s a link in the description if you want to try a rod out. You’ll love them. SMEDLEY5 will save you a little bit. Catchthefever.com.
