I love how the melancholy theme for Celes pair up beautifully with the upbeat theme for Locke, just like how Celes an Locke acutally pair up. Nobuo Uematsu is a legend.

Don't forget how they also perfectly switch to Forever Rachel in reference to her falling and Locke not being able to save her, then back to Locke's theme when he this time actually does save the woman he loves!

This is by far my favourite resolution of the game, Celes' heart finally defrosts and she learns to open up to people, Locke gets over his guilt over his first love and puts her memories to rest willing to move on and love someone else for who they really are (Not just a replacement), and for both of them it means they open their hearts to one another and find what they longed for. An understated romance especially when you consider we see just how their despair went. Locke through his constant beating himself up throughout the story, while Celes reaches her lowest point if you fail to save Cid on the Solitary Island, showing just how much she truely wanted someone underneath that cold exterior.

Maybe one of my favorite scenes in the game, and it's so beautifully set up because of the significance of the bandana basically saving Celes' life.

Only if Cid dies though... (which is a continuity break because I always save Cid)

No disliking towards Cid. But I never felt the scene with him alive as impactful as the one where he dies because how she found hope to live on. Eventually it's up to the player. But in my headcanon the latter is what happened simply because of how much it affected me.
But I also liked Cid so I made a second save where he's alive.

@@TheCynicalOptimist I agree. It's kind of how I feel when people say they wanted Aerith to survive. I get it because Cid and Aerith are likable characters, but their deaths are so important for the narrative and establishing the stakes.

0:51 Now we know where James Cameron ripped his famous Titanic scene from.

This was always the best moment of the ending. But the first time I won the game, I didn't bring Locke on the Zozo mission, so I missed the cut scene in Kohlinghen, so I didn't know that he had lost Rachael when he failed to save her from falling over the edge, and that she lost her memory like Terra did. Once that happened, the mission link the story arc was found. There was like years involved in connecting these dots.

I didn't have Locke in my party on the way to Zozo during my first playthrough either. However, I did explore Kohlinghen and Jidoor and talked to everyone I could. Some of the residents of Kohlinghen mentioned Locke visiting Rachel. After the party reunites in Zozo, Locke is required for the next parts of the game. I then took the party back to Kohlinghen and saw the scenes before proceeding with the game.

My favorite romance in all of gaming. I get choked up about these two.

What do you mean by "interpreting FFVI as an opera"?

I originally made this for an academic presentation on that subject. I'm currently writing a book chapter about it as well. You can click here for more: www.classicalmpr.org/story/2015/07/30/a-musicologist-s-look-at-final-fantasy-vi

@@rtbardic This is very fascinating. I love musical elements in video games so much and Nobuo Uematsu has done such an incredible job portraying the characters and stories we love through sound. Excited to read.
