  • The late, great Alan Freeman rehearsing the new top 30 rundown for inclusion between the DLT show and Noel Edmonds on BBC Radio One in Sept. 1972. Noel Edmonds "helps"out! (yea right!)

Fantastic and instructional to hear on many levels. Love the "thing thing thing" warm-up, not to mention the "Fluff"-Ups. Sound like he worked with a "board operator", basically the same "Boss" system as CKLW "Big 8" (late 60s/early 70s).

How well I remember the ooobie doobie doo from DLTs closing theme from the days when he handed off to Johnny Walker at 1pm.

Sorry, you are quite right, the first 1.28 minutes is actually a snippet of the rehearsal of the chart rundown from 1970. From that point it is as listed. Thanks for pointing that out, sorry for the confussion. Shippy555

Excellent stuff, top30 rehearsal followed by off-air show.
For me, the great thing about Alan Freeman was that, although he did that big personality thing, he was showcasing the music and not himself. So many DJs of that era (and since) were pretending to do the one, but actually doing the other. On Freeman's chart show, each record got some kind of build-up or framing and through use of his set of short snappy musical pads, the music almost never stopped. I think that is what a music station should do.
I like proper music radio and I like all-talk radio. However, to me, mainstream music radio in the UK is now a bastard child of talk radio and music radio, awash with tedious guest chats, boring posse presentation styles and treating the music as prep time for yet another gab fest. No wonder so many people no longer listen and run their own playlists instead. RIP Alan Freeman, wish you were still with us - and still on the radio.

It's Jimmy Young he's with on the excerpt from 1970 - it was still the "JY Prog" on "Radio's 1 & 2" in September 72, so one presumes Noel was standing in for Jimmy as holiday cover.

Ah not quite right. JY was on radio 1 only from around Sept/Oct 71 to June 73 when he moved to R2 only.

Yes it was established (if you read the comments) that the first one and a half minutes are indeed from 1970. The rest is as stated, 1972. Sorted 12 years ago! Sorry for the mix up.

Really? I've got an official Radio One bloopers tape (presented by Adian Juste) where Fluff is (jokingly) asking him not to include any of the outtakes featured here! Of course, he does, and the swear words are bleeped out. Also DLT and Noel Edmonds are heard here too, is the same guy talented enough to imitate them too? There is also a "Story of Rock" outtakes tape also narrated by Fluff and presented (the outtakes tape) by Keith Skues. Lots of similar swearing comments on that tape too. Maybe the same guy does Keith Skues too!
