I did 8 on a 12 for Agg assault w/deadly weapon on a public servant in TDCJ (Estelle, Wynne, Dalhart, Hughes, Ellis, Byrd, Holliday, Montford). I was released in 2016 from a halfway house in Houston, with nothing but some clothes and a Pitbull they'd given me. Today, eight years later, I have earned Two master's degrees; a Master's in IT and a Master's in CS/Cyber Security Engineering which I just completed. I received my Bachelor's in Cyber Security four years after my release, while working full-time. Now, after prison, I have the life I should have always lived, clean, sober, and FREE. "CHOICES."
I met one of my best friends by going to jail for six months. Shared a room with him for months while we awaited sentencing. I ended up getting moved to a program and on the way out, he gave me a couple bags of coffee and a rack of Ramen to take since I couldn't buy commissary for two weeks. Now we have both been out for over six years and stay in contact, go to baseball games and just check in on each other. I'm grateful for that aspect of jail.
Same sort of situation with me bro. I did 6 years and made friends with a guy in there, ended up celling up and became close and trained everyday together backed each other up at all times. and both been out over two years and catch up all the time, go over each other's house and eat with each other's family n go gym n that. I also thank jail for that.
Yeah, that is insane. Something had to be left out of that story. Our justice system is a joke. All these dudes talking about the football number sentences they got and there's pedo's out there hurting kids only getting a few years. Make that make sense.
Back in the 80's when I was in the military, I was wrongfully court-martialed for something I wasn't responsible for. I was given 8 months of confinement. (Yeah, I know. It wasn't much.) When I got to the facility, I was lead through a common area, past barred areas that held a bunch of bunkbeds, all the way to the back, down a small hall. I was placed in a metal box, with bars for a door, a cot, school type desk and that was it. I was allowed reading material, and that was it. Each day, the sergeant that ran the place would come back and see me, and ask how I was doing. I would stand at attention and say "I'm doing fine". After the third day, he asked me again and again, I'd say I was fine. He then said, you know, I don't get you. I asked, why's that sergeant? He said, each day you keep saying you're fine. You never ask to be let out. What's wrong with you? I said, I didn't know I could get out. I thought this was going to be my cell for the next 8 months. So, why fight something I can't change. I've got food, a place to sleep, reading material. That's all I need, so I'm fine. I'm not like depressed, or upset or anything. He said, and here I thought maybe you were crazy or something. You're not supposed to be fine in here all by yourself. Then he laughed and opened the door. He said, I usually let people out the first day, but you kept saying you were fine. I had no problem being locked up all by myself. I've always been kind of a loaner, in a way. If something ever happened and I got locked up, I'd rather be in solitary all by myself, than to be around a bunch of hardened criminals that may be looking for a new guy to attack for no reason. Then, one of two things are going to happen. Either I'll kill someone, or they'll kill me. And, I don't like either of those two outcomes. Oh, and by the way, I appealed my court-martial and won three years later. I got 3 years of backpay including raises, got my rank back, and since I had one year left on my last enlistment, I went back in. Unfortunately, due to the Clinton cut back on the military, I was among many others on base that was told, your services are no longer required. Pissed me off. Spend 3 years fighting to clear my name, get it all back just to have it yanked from me again. At least they paid me to get out.
I was in prison for a bit and the amount of guys on their 3rd, 4th, even 6th bid blew my mind. I don’t think I ever talked to a guy that was actually innocent the whole time. I was guilty. Was a 22 month sentence I got parole in 366 days served by taking every class, program, and job available. That was 2018 when I got out and I’m not on probation or anything now. Been sober since 2021. Realized I had never been arrested when I was 100% sober. It’s a choice, 99% of the time it is a choice to break the law and you get what you get. Lost count how many people I met that I was glad they were locked up. There are evil people in this world, believe that. Truly evil, no chance of changing, wanna just burn it all down type people. Be glad there is a prison system for that reason.
Yeah same as New Zealand murder someone and you be out on parole in under 10 years, low level sexual offenses home detention it's crazy so soft in this country no deterrent whatsoever crime pays@@Champagnep4kki
I got a bid. You’re absolutely right! A guard told me one day that I’d be back, I told myself that day while being chainganged to 6 random mofos for transportation that I will NEVER be back there! To this day I am now a family man with 2 kids. Did a 5 year apprenticeship program and got my shit together. Started going to the Va and getting treatment and staying sober. I got out in 2014.
I thought the same thing. But he did mention that he had previous convictions.. Purse snatching could also be considered strong armed robbery, and if he already was a felon, it could have been a weird mandatory minimum for a repeat offender.
I looked him up, Juan Ballesteros 52 years old born 10/28/1972. 2 arrests one was a DUI in 2001 and another for aggravated robbery in 2008 for which he got a life sentence. Wild.
Man i was at Coffield back in 2022. Will be off parole this Christmas and dont ever want to go back, but I did learn alot when i was away for those 2 years.
I’m not even halfway into this and I already think this is probably the best video you’ve ever done most impactful, most informational. I hope more places like this lunch you in and let you spread the word.
honestly im glad you see this. TEXAS PRISONS do not get enough attention at all. i was at BETO and someone was murdered at least once a week and there was a death almost everyday. Shit is crazy. i was lucky enough to make trustee and had the privilege to avoid the combat scene
I hope not, he has ruined it for everyone for not following the rules and now we can’t visit prisoners in the state of Texas to give them Xmas gifts and to share the gospel with them which is way more important than getting likes and trying to sell Underworld merch😵💫 he has ruined it for everyone at this point
Not that crazy, it's a low risk environment lol. Cameras everywhere plus the inmates aren't the really dangerous ones. Louis Theroux interviewed actual lifers
@@brianbadonde9251 its crazy how far Tommy g has come, read the comment dummy, I don't give af about those piece of shit convicts, they are all in there cause they are dumb and move like kids - a prior inmate
Tommy beautiful speech for those inmates. It’s nice to see a good role model on RUclips that the youth can look up to. Definitely deserve all the blessings that come from your hard work.
Terrible camera work. Wobbly as hell, too many transitions, movie effects unnecessary, zooming in and out, bouncing up and down like guy is on too much Adderall.. this is zoomer brain stuff. (This is my opinion dont get all mad)

thank you tommy being born and raised in texas, this means alot , ian been to TDC but shi just being in county can give me a perspective of how these guys feel being locked in a cage . alot of these people don’t even have family to turn to for support at all. the streets don’t care about you once you locked up . im telling you , in couple years to come , you gon have some the people you interviewed in this video commenting on this telling them how you helped shed a light on the way they living and will appreciate this. I love that you got peso to pop out for this too. Texas Love You Tommy!!! ❤ #ripmainstreammedia !!!!
Having spent time myself, not this unit but TX, you nailed this with what you had access to, its crazy, there's simply no footage anywhere like this online for Texas prison experiences, I try to tell a select few stories every now and then and this says some of the things I can't seem to lol. Great Footage!
@@kimberlymahoney7891 coming from a former inmate less fraternizing. Screw those dudes in there. Me included. Don't try to be friendly be cold and objective. However, be professional and courteous to the inmates who have gained trust and who remain professional as well. I can't stand an unprofessional C.O. some of them should be spending nights in there with us instead of at home lol. And then there are sadists among the ranks.. that is just the nature of the beast tho
@@kimberlymahoney7891I worked in a Psyche unit. Offenders and COs alike wondered why they didn't do like the County Jail and hire nurses as COs, pay them well, and have someone who could do both jobs. That would have saved so much time. And stopped a lot of dumb situations.
I been to Gurney, Coffield, Dawson, Beto, Buster Cole, Jester 1, Hutchins,Sanchez,Roach,Michael and Ferguson. I served 15 years of my life in texas prisons. This video nails it. Though it was fucking violent in the 90s.
I retired from the Coffield unit a few years ago. I'm glad to see people doing this. I couldn't believe they let you in Coffield! Seeing parts of it again brings a lot back. Too bad you couldn't show what the rest of the unit looked like.
I am also a 20+ years retired C.O. and worked a few times on coffield on overtime due too shortage of co's. like you said, I cant believe they let him on the unit filming. it is a whole other world in there and this just showed a fraction of what it is really like. I am so glad too be retired from that life but would not change it for anything. I have seen many co's quit within there first week because they could not handle the stress. like I said, when that last gate locks behind you, you are in a totally different world.
Use your brain. None of the people you know now will be around. Some will die, others will knock someone up and work a shit job and fall off, some will get fat, some will leave you hanging to peruse success. Etc. life is very strange and nothing like what you think it is. I promise with every fiber in my being and any adult who reads this will agree with every word I’m saying. DO NOT wait until it’s too late to care. Work hard, make something of your life and start NOW. Right now.
You do not have the time you think. You truly don’t. You need to fucking understand this. Life is incredible hard and the real world is cold and empty of any care for you and your feelings. It will destroy you. But you could have a great great life. Truly anything is possible for you right now. You could be a surgeon, a truly good lawyer, a chemist, a welder like myself, you could start a successful chain of gyms or stores that fill a niche, you could change many people lives for the better. Or you could WASTE it all. Don’t.
Tommy i can NOT explain how well your editing and video style is getting! i have been watching you for a while now and seen how good these new videos are compared to the older ones, awsome job man!
Maaan. I just did 5 years in TDC and for you to do this documentary is huge. Although limited by the constraints of the Coffield staff, you provided an opportunity for the gentlemen of the unit to show the viewers that they are not defined by the mistakes of thier past and they DESERVE another chance. Growing up without a father and in poverty clearly plays a role in the outcome of person's life, and we as a society need to invest in those communities and reform the Texas Prison System if they ever expect recidivism to lower. God bless you man! Great job!
Watching live from Nigeria in west Africa 🌍, tommy keep doing a great job. You inquisition and asking d right questions with respect keeps your content paying off ...you always have a question to pop out minute after minute without going clueless, your background sound and voice over is top notch... I appreciate you doing that Tommy. I've been through that unit before along with others in TDCJ system. I've changed my life around, gotten into editing, drone stuff, videos and photos. New found life is GOOD! Much love and respect for that G!
Do you think there are things that TDCJ should change and improve on? I used to be a CO, there. I come from a family that’s COs. I have seen things many things in my perspective that needs to be worked on and changed.
@@kimberlymahoney7891you can make that change by talking to your representatives and your Governor. Good luck. Went to jail for 21 days and that is not for me. I learned quickly how to act in society 😂.
@@Hamp72 I personally think there needs to be more programs for offenders, I think there needs to be more requirements for corrections officers to be hired. As I applied to be a CO and went through the academy I wanted to rank up and be a warden to be able to implement good change but as I got in, I saw how fucked up it is, and i decided i would rather to go back being a store manager honestly
@@kimberlymahoney7891 yeah I get what you are saying ,there's probably a lot of corruption in the system. Maybe there's going to be change in a great way around the world. One can only hope and pray. Happy Holidays.
Nah, i don't think he is. What about that guy, who was locked up in Rikers Island, the one Netflix made a document of😅 he got a sentence for stealing a backpack, which he didn't steal
you can look up the court record on his case he was charged with aggravated robbery in which he caused bodily harm to a person 65 or older and in Texas aggravated robbery carries a maximum sentence of life in prison even if you don’t have a criminal history which he did he had a previous felony for driving while intoxicated he also run from the police and the car he was driving was stolen he also had other people’s information on him but he was only charged for the aggravated robbery also the lady would end up recovery from her injuries so don’t believe people saying she died because she didn’t also there’s people on here saying it was a armed robbery and that he used a gun which is also not true there was no report of a firearm being used in the crime
I Worked for Securus a company inside of TDCJ issuing out tablets to inmates. I've been to allred, roach, baten, wheeler, jordan, dalhart, Worked 1 day a week at the mechler unit solo and 4 days a week at the clements unit solo with 3000+ inmates. It was a crazy experience I got to meet a ton of different men with different storys and different backgrounds. Some are great people who made a mistake, but some of the high security inmates at clements is what lead me to leave. All and all a great experience at the age of 21-22. My Unit barbor at mechler was locked up for the same charge I had except the DA dropped it. Crazy how life works. 0:01
As someone who had no record that ended up doing some years in the CDCR system, one thing I can say is that IF (and really, big if) the inmate has family sticking by them those people are essentially doing time as well. The effect of someone you love being locked away isn’t always talked about but it’s huge. I thought of that seeing the family visiting from California. I was lucky enough to be at a prison where the phones were more available than some others and my wife and parents spent a lot of money to keep minutes on their phones so that I could call. Wife also visited once a month as I wasn’t too far from home but many don’t have those luxuries and it’s clear those inmates have it extra hard. That said, those same inmates always seemed legitimately excited when others would get visits and always ask how they went. Beyond the violence and general aggression inside is also a strong brotherhood between those willing to put in the time and effort to speak to one another and without that, good luck.
We also had a few really good programs that were mostly optional but sometimes mandatory if say you got caught with drugs or did something violent (substance abuse programs, criminal thinking etc). I did a 6-9 month, 5 day a week 3hrs a day substance abuse class and it was immensely helpful as I was an oxy addict on the streets, but it was clear some in the class didn’t want to change and only a few of us honestly took part. I always saw it like this- if you couldn’t stay clean on the inside, couldn’t change for the positive in some way or another, you’ll likely be adding to the insane recidivism rate. My yard was absolutely flooded with meth, weed, and eventually even heroin probably more so than the average prison yard so I am sure it was extra tough to stay away but it really isn’t a fun place to get high (or drunk on the pruno) or I sure didn’t think so but I watched guys smoke and shoot meth and clean the bathroom vigorously at 2am or fidget with their possessions so maybe others could let their guard down more easily lol. Sad reality, but I did made some good friends inside (NEVER expected that) and the experience helped me grow as a man so somehow I am a bit grateful for the experience. It opened my eyes to a different world and I can never unsee or unlearn any of it. Just some thoughts but I was only a minimum security inmate, I can’t speak on level III and IV yards. Still saw some very graphic incidents I wish I didn’t but at the end of the day these are all real people who oftentimes are completely forgotten and it’s sad no matter what some had done or even continue to do.
Amen to this. My big brother has been locked up in this exact prison for 20 plus years and it has taken a toll on me and my mom and his son. We are there for him but it still hurts. 🥹

Insane video Tommy G. Love the insider view. I love how the inmates respected you. I love how you showed what’s it’s like inside the jail in a very unusual and unbiased way! Great video Tommy G

Some units are still rocking, I was on the same pod with a guy that passed in 2018 I think from ‘heat stroke’ but had m3t# in his system, and that made his family’s sueing invalid since it wasn’t due to heat itself, a guy with 8 year sentence with 7 down 1 year to go killed his cellie after smoking toon with a fan motor looking at life now, CO’s pepper sprayed one guy who had asthma they didn’t listen, pepper sprayed him and threw him in solitary to come back an hour or so later to him being unresponsive, the prison sent the body to Huntsville for burial without letting the family know, one of his homeboys called his family that something was up to call the prison, the prisons response was that they reached out to them and no one answered, they were trying to bury him to cover up their F up they ended him, 4 people passed away on 4th of July from smoking toon, so we went into lockdown…it’s crazy how they can end you and make you disappear and without family you’re forgotten, one guy punched the captain so he was sent to administration segregation and that man suffered bro, other people said they could hear him crying out in pain those CO’s would rush in his cell in riot gear and F’ him up over him punching the captain and when his family came to visit they denied it due to him being in ‘seg’ nah if his family saw him and his injuries they’d be f’d so those CO’s do everything to hide their malice also ad seg had blind spot they chose his cell because of that blind spot
What is smoking toon with a fan motor? And I believe it. People will group up to cover big f&$k ups like that. My kid has asthma and I cannot fathom the effect pepper spray would have.. that poor guy. Terrible way to go..
man i pray for these brothers i got two brothers in and out like clock work all u can do is want them to want it,i fr got love for ya tommy u one of the realest online
This made me want to watch the movie 🎥 "Life" with Martin Lawrence & Eddie Murphy. Keeping positive throughout all those years, but they were innocent 😇 the whole time 🙋😁🙋😁
I wish I could do this with Tommy I was incarcerated and I learned alot from that experience it humbled me I want to go around and help others and spread the love
TDCJ-ID CO "the ol' glasshouse unit" I'm so glad to be outta that place.. too bad they didn't let you film more of the unit, it's a fucking literal maze. The ad seg guys have some crazy stories, that's where they keep the hi profile guys. The inmates would burn K wing almost on a daily basis when I was there. They keep that from gen pop tho so of course you wouldn't get to see that wich kinda sucks, you don't get to see what prison life is actually like there. COUNT TIME!! you must've had to edit 3 or 4 of those out 🤣 great vid!
Tommy, I have a lot of love for you, man. Thank you for doing this, thank you for giving these men a platform to speak their truth on. I have been a long term viewer and am incredibly overjoyed with seeing how much good you put out in the world by sharing these intimate stories with us.
Your ending solution was absolutely SPOT ON man. Even if they don't let them access the money until release. That would be amazing way to help them transition.
Pack that prison pocket with lots of Za and F and you’ll be good. You go in empty and they know you had a date to turn in and didn’t bring a package it won’t be good for you
Great video! I am a retired California Correctional Officer and It is nice to see other state prisons and how we all run exactly the sane way ! But yes a big prison this is is in Texas. Once again I like to give thanks to all of who have and are still walking the toughest beat of the state.
Facts thats why if you do crime out there you better be able to afford it. All comes down to money at the end of the day...difference between signin for 5 yrs TDC(if you in TX) and signin for 2 yrs probation or maybe even time served if you sat for a little bit. Last time I got into trouble paid for a lawyer and got that 12.44a...iykyk
Texas is full of prisons, my cousin is doing 90 years in a prison in Texas, we've been trying forever to get him out, he's been in there since I was a baby, im 30 now
As a correctional officer in a maximum security men’s prison in Texas (TDCJ) this is so cool to watch. I treat all the inmates like human, but you also have to be careful so in depth conversations like this don’t happen. For my own safety I have to just keep in mind that some of these men have absolutely nothing to lose. But, some of these men have really changed inside.
"Murder Self Defense" is not a crime under Texas Penal Code. I'm not denying the family's assertion of miscarriage of justice, but their statements of the crime are not part of Texas law. Period. Texas has relatively well-defined self-defense statues that reduce ambiguity. They may not be perfect, but making up charges is not a way to cry for one's innocence. If their family is truly innocent of some crime then I hope they find justice.
@@donttrip9664 certainly and I understand that. I wasn't calling out the family for their apparent frustrations but rather pointing out facts. Facts and frustrations are two very different things which are not lost upon me. 🙂
They probably dont know the terminology to use. Ive been charged for Take and Detain in the past but if you asked my family they would probably say something like "Kidnap" So the family not knowing the exact name of the charge is not surprising
Makes you wanna finish that probation clean as a whistle. When I got out they had me on probation for 2 years. The first year and a half was hard but then it was easy. God first

Facts. U arent getting life for just snatching a purse. Maybe he had a heater on him or he beat the brakes off of the woman.
Wild.

I retired from the Coffield unit a few years ago. I'm glad to see people doing this. I couldn't believe they let you in Coffield! Seeing parts of it again brings a lot back. Too bad you couldn't show what the rest of the unit looked like.
In 22' I used to do transport for coffield, I was working beto and powledge
I am also a 20+ years retired C.O. and worked a few times on coffield on overtime due too shortage of co's. like you said, I cant believe they let him on the unit filming. it is a whole other world in there and this just showed a fraction of what it is really like. But you could have a great great life. Truly anything is possible for you right now. Great job!

Would love to be able to share more about my experience
DALLAS LOVES YALL!!!! Keep going, you are in our prayers! ❤❤❤❤❤
