  • Waitomo District Council is $40 million in debt and has raised rates to be the highest in the country to try and meet infrastructure costs. The impact on small towns like Te Kuiti and Waitomo Village has been immense with residents still suffering Covid related unemployment and economic downturn. Residents Michelle Wi and Katrina Winn are trying to help by establishing a community garden, and setting up a petition. Land manager Charles Tutahi speaks out about the impact of rising rates on farmers, and Deputy Mayor John Robertson defends the stance of the Council.

    Its not the rates payers fault that council are in debt. That doesn't seem fair. They need to look into why that debt is so much .

    Te Kuiti has some of the most fertile soil in the country it should be the food growing capital of NZ. Ngati Maniapoto should be stepping up for our people come on if your annual profits are just below 2% then your not using our land or trusts wisely..

      To pay rates people can grant councils a charging order on their property I think.

    When the council borrowed money, it would of come with a contract. Who did they borrow money from? Because during covid there was a payment packages for businesses. Yes you had to tighten down ( wage/salary workers) but a saw mill, tourist attractions? A thought...

      There's a quote by king Solomon in the bible. " For the rich shall rule the poor, the borrower will become a servant to the lender" The kaunihera borrowed the money and are responsible to pay the lender" eg: bank

      This is the proof that you do not own your property if you do not pay rates for say five years the council will sell your property to get the outstanding rates you do not own your property and rates are nothing more than a land tax

    "No we wont be looking at a rates freeze"...we've long enjoyed the salaries we're on whilst fleecing the very people who pay us rates for us to fund multiple dead end projects...WDC is the epitome of the saying "money for nothing"...

    It looks to me that the high standards of living that were established during the time of New Zealand high incomes are now becoming not affordable for the population. We cannot keep living like we have lots of money and demanding high standards when we don't actually have the money to pay for it. Councils need to seriously review their budgets and cut the spending on what is not essential. Festivals, sports, arts, etc... all that needs to become community activities that aren't funded by government.

  • @adsdft585
    @adsdft585 27 дней назад +1

    The debt based economy is a serious issue. Currently the cost debt higher. But the main issue links the amount debt needed to finance activities. This can be linked to changes in the 1980s. A report from the roading contractors association pointed out that from the 1930s to about 1970 lots infusrtucture was built and it was built for a growing population but since this time it has not been built and now useful life is an issue.

See what they are spending the money on.. You are allowed to. You are the rate payer. They are a very rude and arrogant people, l tell you now. Sue these rude,think you own the land people, to tell us how you spend our money. Before we pay any rates. Especially, look at what your rates have done for your land
