  • Well, it's summer and that means not a lot going on with the beekeeper and the hives interacting. Except that I have a few small colonies that need attention and one box of honey to pull off. Come on along on my VLOG and let's take a walk out into the bee yard and see what we have.

    Thanks for joining me in my bee yard here in Louisiana as I share how I maintain my beehives. My videos are not meant to be 'How To' videos, but simply me sharing my experiences in beekeeping as I learned it from my mentors, teachers, and studies.

    I bought 5 of the Corey Steven’s queens this year. Ended up with nothing for my time and money. I will not pay for virgin queens ever again.

      I think his queens are fine, but For me it was more about the time frame that I introduced them. Summer is not a good time down here. But I do agree on buying unmated queens though. I’m not going to spend that much on an unmated queen. I’d rather buy cells for $5 locally and put them in the hive or even if they emerge introduce them after that. I have great success normally with cells and unmated queens, but not this late. I really like when I can use my own grafts.

    Hi Mike, I'm glad you are getting over the flu,,,,,😊
    Well I took your advice on how you spaced out 10 frame honey 🍯 box, and its working .the bees are making fat frames, not capped yet,
    😅 THANKYOU for your idea,,I have only 6 hives in my backyard in Cairns Australia.

    Some people actually quote on quote pinch good queens tbinking its the queen's fault,leave them alone bees will do what bees do,they will get it together smh🤔

      @MikeBarryBees  27 дней назад

      Well, this queen was definitely not good and was not laying after a very long time. They would’ve dwindled to nothing as the workers died off. Better to give them a new home.

    Those were some interesting hives and queens. May not have worked well but if you have nothing to be curious about, life gets pretty dull fairly fast. I like those kind of experiments, too bad they cost you money though. That's how advancements and discoveries are made though.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  Месяц назад

      Yes, I agree on this. We need to try thing out from time to time and we never know what we might find. Sometimes good and sometimes bad. We don't know though if we don't try. Thanks for the comment and for watching!!

    Mike ,that nuck with the not laying queen is like my production hives when I cage queens. It looks the same.. it's all prepared for the eggs. Pollen, honey, polished center. That's how my are with the queens caged. And those bees are fat bees gorged with pollen whayting for something to feed.. l had them live over 3 months in some tests l did. Like winter bees in summer. It's because they are very slow to get old if they don't feed brood. And they are very good to raise those first new bees. My queens are like mushin guns when I release them on those polished brood cells.
    That's why caging queens works great.. because those same bees prepare everything, live long and raise the new bees before dying. I love the method.. it saved me so much money on feeding when it's drought outside. They just stay in and wait for better conditions

      Interesting comment. Never seen or heard some of the practices you bring up from time to time, but then again, Europe and surrounding areas always seem to be one step ahead of us anyhow.

    In your opinion is it better to have the honey by the entrance or brood?

      I think it should be on the sides and above the nest at this time of year and really for most of the year.

    I had queen do the same thing so I put in a couple of undrawn foundation and she took off laying. Funny thing was she was laying long before the frames were fully drawn. I thought holy cow maybe she didn’t like the pheromones from the other bees.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  Месяц назад +1

      The strange thing with this queen is that there were all kinds of polished cells waiting for her. Maybe like you said though, it was pheromones from other bees. Who knows. Just a long time for her to just walk around.

    Mike, I'm glad you are feeling better. Will you have to go on the road some more this fall? Congrad on the record harvest. Don't know how you will get rid of 4,000 lbs of honey at the little farmers market?? Have a good week also.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks Russell. I have a couple of possible trips coming up if the clubs end up calling me, but nothing major. We looked at the numbers from the past year and we sell about half of our honey at the market, but regulars and pop-up orders makes up the other half. And each year there seems to be decent growth form the stats. So we don't solely rely on the market. I also have one wholesale account that moves a good but. I also carry over each year and that's what allowed us to not miss any honey last season after such a rough year. We had honey left from the previous season that we made 3K. I have 5 buckets left from last year, so we'll be getting right into the 4K in the coming weeks.
