You can always tell a Yorkshireman, but you can't tell him much! Good video, I've always grown leeks this way and it's pretty much foolproof. However, if you want a longer white stem try putting a 6 inch (again) plastic pipe "collar" over the plants to keep light from the stem.
Oh! I've got to dig mine up and find some space in my garden. LOL I have cabbages brussels sprouts, large tomato plants and now I have to find some room for these things. I have lettuce I can take out cuz it's ready. Glad I watched this!! Thank you!
Fabulous! This is what I was looking for. Love your technique, surprisingly other videos on leek planting don't seem to realise the trick of how to plant them deep to get more of the white part.
I don't speak that flavor of English, but the points are well taken. I do like to start in a deeper box than what you have their. Restaurant bus trays or tubs are cheap and last forever.
I sowed my leeks about the same time as you, in polystyrene boxes, and they look like fine grass! I must be doing something wrong because I bought special seed this year. Oh well, I'll just have to go and check my 9" dibber so that I'm ready to go. Best Wishes, Brendan.
I calibrated mine with the girth so I'm happy with the mediocre 6". Oh dear, where is this going ? Can't wait 'til your first spud reveal ! Cheers, Dan.
Thanks to your dibber checking there is now red wine all over my screen. Its going to take ages to clean that off. What do use to measure 9 inches between them? Great tips and I am quite sure no-one wants a bitter shaft. On a serious note I actually learned a lot from this and will be planting my leeks out tomorrow so perfect timing as well.. Cheers Dan, an absolutely great video. All the best mate.
My first sowing of leek went in a couple of weeks ago. Since watching you grow yours in a poly box and starting mine the same way I've had great leeks. As long as the allium leaf miner stays away! My dibber is uncalibrated so I think I went in to far!! Gunna plant another row or two before netting against the leaf miner. Cheers Dan. Great video. Chris.
If it goes in too far you can always pull it out at the last minute ( maybe Brendan can help you out with that technique ) If it did go in too far you'll be rewarded with a huge long gleaming white shaft by Autumn ;) Cheers, Dan.
I've got some of my leeks in, but the rest I hope to get in this week. I've got to find space for them though. Oh you wish it was 6 inches:-) Very funny. Let us know how they grow.
I love gardening, I really do but what annoys me, especially at this time of year, is that I suffer from sleep disturbance and usually cannot sleep at night and instead sleep during the day. As I write it's almost 3am and I haven't slept a wink, yesterday it was 4pm when I woke and it was soon too dark to do anything in the garden. I have so much to do as well. Please include me in your thoughts and prayers so I can overcome my sleep disturbance and get cracking in the garden again.
What about the lady leek-growers and how do they calibrate their dibbers? I bet there is a queue at Ingleton Pottery next week Enjoyed the video as usual, many thanks
the leeks look to be about 5 inch apart. Your calibration technique could be shorter than you think lol. Keep up the good work though. After moving to Manitoba from Yorkshire I really enjoy all your videos.
No root or stem trimming to increase rooting in new plant holes...why did your try not work, did you trim too “tight” to the stem...it works every year for me and I plant some 500 leeks / onions each year...makes stronger leeks and onion plants as they grow..... keep the vids coming buddy....
Brilliant, a comedy genius as well as veg genius. Ronnie barker eat your heart out, and u used an old four candle for a prop. No I said fork handle...repeat until you can't walk anymore.
Good tip to avoid " Gritty Shaft" after dibbing the whole to 6 inch place a used toilet roll holder in the whole, to ground level. Then pop your leek in. By the time the cardboard rots away your leeks are well on their way... plus NO GRIT on your shaft....
Dan, Thank you for a wonderful video, I will look for one on sowing the leek seeds. Do you have a preference on how early you plant them prior to putting them in the garden? Thanks BEM
Maybe it's a conversion issue, but where we are here in the states, that zip tie is most assuredly better than 9 inches. By the way, love the dibber. Made one just like it from a leftover broken shovel and used it this year. I'm working on getting as good as you. May get there one day. Love the vids buddy.
Me too, hence the one , two counting. and it was a bit chilly otherwise I might have got to three... Supposed to have chucked it down the last few days here but nowt occurring. Cheers, Dan.
what are you growing the leek seedlings in ? mine are a month old, and thin like a sewing needle, few inches long...... i grew them in compost and vermiculite....
Great information! I'll have to try growing leeks next spring. I must be a bit prude, though, but it's my fault really, for watching, as this is a man's gardening video, judging by the men's comments.
You don't fill the holes in at this stage or you get soil and grit between the leaves that'll stay inside until harvest. If you leave the hole then it'll fill in slowly from the bottom upwards as it rains and the leek grows to fill the hole without fear of getting the soil inside the plant. Cheers, Dan.
Once they're planted out I never water them as the roots are so deep in the soil. I may do over the next week or two until they establish but after that I just leave 'em be. Cheers, Dan.
Lol.. THR nursery guy told me to plant them Like onions..WRONG WRONG WRONG....he said to then cover them with soil as they grow....man... did I plant them wrong...GOOD THING I HAVE ANOTHER BUNCH TO PLANT.
I was in pain watching this guy kneeling on that skinny piece of wood, I found it hard to concentrate especially when he gave a little, "haha oops me knees" Please can you get a knee rest, if you don't , you'll do your knees in.
OH MY!!!!!!!!!!!! Did NOT expect the measurement portion of your vid. I love a gardener with sense of humor!
You can always tell a Yorkshireman, but you can't tell him much!

Such a pleasure to watch a pro at work. Shame I didn't watch this before I planted my leeks...
I will plant leeks for the first time. But first, I must find the perfect dibber. Hmmmm.
Thank you for this useful video.
The six inches thing was a bit of a shocker, wasn't expecting that! Great video, learned loads, thank you.
i reckon, a bit unnecessary
@@receptionvector122 Totally unnecessary but totally hilarious. Nothing wrong with a bit of good old banter. Great video.😀😂🤣
Brilliant advice Dan. Will watch for your harvest to see how this growing method works
So that's where I've gone wrong, I've nothing to calibrate my dibber with! :'(
Shouldn't be too hard to find a volunteer!
🤣🤣🤣
LOL
🤣🤣🤣🤣

cheking to be sure it is six inches...hee hee...must have been a warm day then - perfect way to check a leek.
Thanks for the good laugh.... oh and the leek video too! A little humor is good for the veggies!

No probs, I await your Leek reveal to see how deep you planted them.
Cheers, Dan.

First time growing Leeks. Thanks for answering all my concerns. Keep growing! Steve

Great video. Just what I was looking for. Thank you 👍👏
Awesome update thank you for sharing have a blessed weekend
At 1:50 you made me laugh my beer out through my nose.
Yapp, same here.
My coffee almost made it in my keyboard. lol

It's because of all that singing you do.

Miku is going to love this
Excellent video, both informative and funny. :D

Dan, I think you had the cable tie to far up the dibber compared to your calibration device :-)
Don't forget I measured it twice...but what against what.?. :)
Cheers, Dan.
Naughty....! The soundtrack to this video is like something out of the Two Ronnies.
Excellent videos mate very informative. going to put some of your methods into practice as i have never grew a good onion or leek yet.
6ichs that made me laugh, really enjoy your videos.
Cheers, Dan.
Love this!!! I got more than I expected.
Might ya plant them 8 inches deep, as my measuring stick is off a little. 7 years later and I'm lmfao. Thanks!
thanks for the tip... for a non gritty shaft :)
Awesome, gardening tips and smutty jokes mixed in 😝
Brilliant, a comedy genius as well as veg genius. Ronnie barker eat your heart out, and u used an old four candle for a prop. No I said fork handle...repeat until you can't walk anymore.
You cant beat a Fork 'andle for a dibber.
Got any o's ?
cheers Dan.
You could mark the desired distance between holes on the plank you are walking on and make it a no-brainer.
A gritty shaft. I think of a drink when I hear that. Over here they call it "sex on the beach"
Good tip to avoid " Gritty Shaft" after dibbing the whole to 6 inch place a used toilet roll holder in the whole, to ground level. Then pop your leek in. By the time the cardboard rots away your leeks are well on their way... plus NO GRIT on your shaft....
I have learned so much from your videos.
As a learner, great advice. How far apart are they?
Dan,
Thank you for a wonderful video, I will look for one on sowing the leek seeds. Do you have a preference on how early you plant them prior to putting them in the garden?

That's what my dibber was initially, a snapped spade shaft.
Works well.
Cheers, Dan.
This is the same way we grow wet lands taro in the Pacific Islands. The root fills the hole more easily and you get a much better result
a 10 out of 10 for the watering can tip
Didnt know Sean Bean had an allotment...haven't seen your face yet :)
trying them for the first time this year, just starting to get them out side but still in the box, frost the last night or two yet.
Don't worry about frost, they're the hardiest plants out there.
Gerrem planted out.
Cheers, Dan.
I use the same measuring device, just fold it in half and it's exactly 6 inches. Where did you get that dry weather from? I want some.
Me too, hence the one , two counting. and it was a bit chilly otherwise I might have got to three...
Supposed to have chucked it down the last few days here but nowt occurring.
Cheers, Dan.
catscats50 or double the size of it, if it’s only half way to the cable tie...lol...
How long did it take from seeds to get to that size, before you plant them in the ground.
Do you have to backfill them in after planting
what are you growing the leek seedlings in ? mine are a month old, and thin like a sewing needle, few inches long...... i grew them in compost and vermiculite....
Where can I get a ruler like that?!! 😆😆
Great information! I'll have to try growing leeks next spring. I must be a bit prude, though, but it's my fault really, for watching, as this is a man's gardening video, judging by the men's comments.
Oh shoot! Can you cover them with more dirt if you planted them too high out of the ground?
Smutty innuendo at it's very best !!
Ha ha, you make me laugh. Keep it up Dan 😉
I'll try to keep it up, but it's getting harder the older I get.
Wait a minute, this was supposed to be about Leeks....
Oh well. :)
Cheers, Dan.
Allotment Diary s
Do you trim the leeks as they grow in the polystyrene in the greenhouse?
That tool you used was so handy! How did you make it, and also, why do you not want to fill in the hole once the leek is planted?
You don't fill the holes in at this stage or you get soil and grit between the leaves that'll stay inside until harvest.
If you leave the hole then it'll fill in slowly from the bottom upwards as it rains and the leek grows to fill the hole without fear of getting the soil inside the plant.

love it, two of my favourite RUclipsrs watching each others videos :-D
Good one mate made my lol
Well, you can't be serious all the time.
Veg growing isn't particularly exciting.
Cheers, Dan.
;-)
Thank yu. I planted mine wrong. I listen to a friend on how to plant. I guess I will relant.? Any thoughts.
Not sure, sorry, depends on how you planted them.
Cheers, Dan.
How about watering in hot/dry spells ??
What measure do you use for your giant veg lol ???
Good video thanks
Sir what about leaf onion, how to grow them?
Ha ha 1,2 that's as far as you got, did you run out of measurement. The first funny gardening video? kudos to you well done.
If you don’t feel in the hole, it will get exposed to sunlight. Not sure I followed that.
ordered my first giant leek seeds this year, what doo you do when planting seeds and wht dirt mix do you use?
Thank you
where, your video, of the yield of these leeks?
Hopefully will get some of mine in this weekend. How many times a week do you water them?
Once they're planted out I never water them as the roots are so deep in the soil.
I may do over the next week or two until they establish but after that I just leave 'em be.
Cheers, Dan.
Oh dear ... we may not all match that 6" calibrator🤣😂
what variety of leek was this? thx
Tried growing leeks but got roman lettuce instead..
my leek does not have such long roots as yours yet what should i do?
gabe b I purchased some seedlings, you can transplant them I will be transplanting mine...they don't have to be that size
"Gritty Shaft" LOL
Me leeks much smaller, only small dibbler required :(
There's nowt' wrong with a small dibber.
It's how you use it that's important.
Cheers, Dan.
I tell em' it's only 3" but it spins...
Lol..
THR nursery guy told me to plant them Like onions..WRONG WRONG WRONG....he said to then cover them with soil as they grow....man... did I plant them wrong...GOOD THING I HAVE ANOTHER BUNCH TO PLANT.
hey if you have a pretty gal in your yard you dont even need to use the tool, just do some pushups on your garden bed
Only 6 inches! :-)
+naomi chambers 3 actually. He counted twice XD lol!
That was brilliant measurements when stuck not have a measuring tape eh! I'll remember that one, too funny
Okay, not what I expected, but good video.
thank you
ang on I'll just check they're 9 inch apart for ya...........
6 inches that's it???
THANKS BRO
My husband asked what I was laughing at.... had no idea what to tell him...
whaaat? He measured those with his 6-inch ....#/?
Dont have them in europe
6 inches ha ha. good one.
hahahahahahahahhaa.....6 inches..... Good video!!
Those leeks look more like green onions..
1.55 how he measure ha ha gipper down n gipper in ....

I was in pain watching this guy kneeling on that skinny piece of wood, I found it hard to concentrate especially when he gave a little, "haha oops me knees"
Please can you get a knee rest, if you don't , you'll do your knees in.
He stopped at 2 inches hahaha thats all he got
Nobody wants a gritty shaft. 😂🤣
Nobody likes a gritty shaft...
Could've been useful, pity about the juvenile crudity
I can't measure 6 inches lol
Start from the floor upwards, you'll do it.
Cheers, Dan.
No whyyy?🤦that tool
Real fuckin classy Zzzzzzzzzzp
