'I Was Scammed Out Of Thousands' Victim Recalls Horrifying 'APP' Scam Experience | GMB

- Actor Adam Rickitt and wife Katy will be joining us to reveal how he was duped into transferring tens of thousands of pounds to scammers as part of an Authorised Push Payment (APP) scam. Last Tuesday Adam received a text from Barclays Bank saying there was suspicious activity on his account and that a member of their fraud team would call him. When the call came through he cross-referenced the 0845 number on the Barclay’s website where it was listed as the bank’s fraud team. The person on the line told him that someone had tried to withdraw cash at the bank’s Crewe (Cheshire) branch using his passport, driving licence and signature. Adam checked his bank account which looked fine and called the number back from a friend’s phone. When they phoned back they told him he must make a ‘dummy payment’ in order to trigger their internal fraud systems - which he did. When he later logged in to his account the money was gone.

Ghosting numbers should be outlawed on all communication /mobile networks.
If Barclays had enough operators to answer the phone instead of putting people in long queues he would have been able to find out it was fake.
It's easy dont give details. Its fools who get scammed
Always have 2 phones while talking to scammers you can be calling bank with other phone
For the scammers to know so much details about an account smacks of an inside job.

The best way to avoid being scammed is when anybody rings you from a number you don't recognize let them introduce themselves, and then tell them to eff off. I've been doing this for years and so far, I've never been scammed.
Scammed out of 2 grand before I was pretty pissed of but learnt my lesson

Spoofing or ghosting ? If one calls back to the fraud line by dialing the number one by one and not press call back button using the same mobile phone, you should be able to connect to the authentic fraud team.
Brits always get their money back on these types of things. In America if you do something like this they consider it stupidity and you'll lose everything

If the scammers already have all their info, why do they even need to call the people...why don't they just withdraw their money?

What an idiot, he should have verified with his actual bank! Still, fraudsters should lose their lying tongues.
He tried to but they keep you waiting in a queue for ages when you try to phone them.

You’re Wong there, sometimes people are foolish, but trust me, anyone can get scammed. These scams are getting more sophisticated and with the advent of AI, it’s only going to get worse.
Funny how every two years Adam has some reason to be interviewed by GMB or Loose Women despite a career that ended 20 years ago and never amounted to much to begin with
