  • Low sensitivity on Malahit DSP 2 Radio with additional Hi-z board and telescopic antenna!
The Malahit DSP 2 Radio with additional HI-z board does not perform well comparing with DSP1 with Hi-z board installed
I own the original Malahit DSP, Malahit DSP 1 with additional Hi-Z board and Malahit DSP 2 that comes with the additional Hi-Z board included.
Now when the DSP 1 with additional board arrived I was thrilled (and I still am) about how sensitive the radio is using the telescopic antenna with the hi-z board module on. This radio is a gem and a keeper for portable use.
After that I saw the DSP 2 and decided to take it. Well…bad news, the radio is almost deaf using the telescopic antenna and have super low sensitivity.
When Hi-z board module is on there is 1 db difference in the signal reception also the preamp needs to be ON, plus the RF gain needs to be set on 59 at maximum. Maybe my DSP 2 is defective but I can not believe that the DSP 1 with the additional board perform so well and it is so super sensitive using the telescopic antenna compared with the DSP 2. I hope things will improve in the near future for the DSP 2. Maybe I have a defective unit but definetly I can see the difference.

There is a Bias Tee option (with on/off selection on HARD menu) with the DSP2 that applies DC voltage to the antenna connector for powering preamps to eliminate the need of an external power source. Per the engineer who designed this, the bias tee circuitry reduces sensitivity from LW-lower shortwave frequency range. By removing L7 from the circuit board, you disconnect the Bias Tee circuit from antenna and huge improvements to LW, MW are noticed. L7 is a tiny surface mount technology inductor (coil) that is located on circuit board near the SMA antenna connector. I have removed L7 on mine and now the DSP1 and DSP2 have great sensitivity noticeable in both HiZ and 50 ohm antennas.

Problem solved. Removed L7 coil as per instructions received on this FB post facebook.com/groups/malahitdsp/permalink/2600343653445159/
Looks like on the DSP2 Georgiy has an option for bias tee preamp. To do this he has a circuit that as it seems makes the receiver less sensitive with telescopic antenna on low frequencies. After complaints from users he gave a solution for that: remove L7 coil and you have sensitivity as DSP1 but no bias tee. Thank you Jimmy A. for the advice.

Do you have a picture or description, which shows how to remove the L7 coil. (I don‘t have a Facebook account). I have the same problem (I own both receiver,). Thank you very much for your valuable information.
