      Please correct me if I am wrong but sometimes uptalk is a must just before a comma. What about this sentence...
      " As long as he comes back from his trip on time, he will go to the meeting."
      After the word "time" I personally would add an up-intonation just to indicate that I will add more information.
      English is not my mother tongue though.

    • @johnnyb6049
      @johnnyb6049 5 лет назад +4

      stephen tang,
      The second choice, (#2), is correct . . . without any of the Commas to be sure that it was punctuated correctly when the sentence was written rather than spoken. Commas shouldn't be used in writing to indicate pauses when speaking.

      I'm also not a native speaker, and I also get the trouble like you. But my thought a little different. You know, many others speak English over the world like Korea, Singapore, India and so on. We learn English to communicate with many people on the world, not just UK or US, so I always try to listen and understand many people speaking English from many countries, I think that is better than just listen the standard English. But I also learn the way to speak English accurated. Thank you all for reading my comment!

    One thing I am getting clear is that among varied factors influencing a good language, the concept of Intonation plays a key function in deciding our effective communication and maintaining good relationship. It's more of psychological in nature, as the right awareness on intonation enables our understandings to identify the emotions displayed by the speakers. Maybe, Intonation is a true reflection of one's mental state. As rightly said by the teacher, we need to be careful whom we imitate. I do make a note of it Ma'am and I am immensely thankful to the Teacher for the worthy training. Great. (Ravi)

    Let me tell you guys a very authoritative perspective from my learning and teaching experience since I’m an English Language lecturer in China. I had been to Tennessee and Massachusetts studying and working. I noticed significantly that the Bostonians and ppl in Massachusetts are a whole lot more uptalker than Tennesseans ! Ppl in Boston especially girls and women sometimes even men use a lot of rising tones after each PERIOD ! This seemed to be a fashion! And ppl regard it as natural and sweet and graceful, oh my God! As a non-native speaker of the English language I was shocked! But my ability of acquiring a new accent is soooooo strong, extraordinarily strong, I myself now has a Bostonian accent!
