- Reich Marshal Hermann Göring, the head of the Luftwaffe and one of the greatest art thieves in history, was also mad about animals, both hunting them and also keeping them as trophies. Thomas Beck I agree, great job! Also on the Berlin Zoo, it was mentioned a lot of animals survived the war, unfortunately most of the large mammals did not, for instance the elephants.
Love him, or hate him, he was an extremely complex and interesting individual. Thanks again, Dr. Felton, for a fascinating bite of history I would never otherwise have come across.
Goring was quite an interesting fellow.
Indeed he was. He was a pretty soft guy honestly, pretty bad at being "bad." He cried when he got yelled at by Hitler at Normandy for "being lazy." It was mostly out of frustration i'd say. The Luftwaffe physically could not take off due to limited oil and constant bombardment. He also tried to get on Hitler's good side all the time. Battle of Britain, formation of the Fallschirmjager and Hermann Goering Luftwaffe Field Divisions/Panzer Divisions, etc.
This is the first time hearing Goering's natural voice, unlike at his Neuremberg Trial where he sounded upset the entire time. Here he had a very manly tone.
0:55 It's not that uncommon for hunters to paradoxically be animal lovers too. Buffalo Bill, for example, famous in the US for being such a great Bison/Buffalo hunter, was also one of the first people to advocate for the preservation of the animal he hunted so much. Probably because he realize that hunting your game to extinction means the fun ends and the meat runs out.
The hunt is the best part.
The kill is when the work starts.(The closes thing,
Chasing your wife, then getting married.)
Hunting gives a prospective to life,
That one gets no where else.
The hunt adds value to life,
Not diminishes the value.
Especially after, you see how much effort the hunted uses for life.
It is something that is not easy to explain. And is different for each individual.

I am a hunter, I mostly hunt white tail mainly, but have gone bird hunting once. Hunting is a great sport that will live on for ever.
It is because hunters know and respect animals. They understand them, more so than any PETA advocate could ever understand.
Nazi Germany was actually the first country in the world to have animal rights laws.

The Berlin Zoo also has the bizarre distinction of having the first bombing victim of the RAF’s campaign against Berlin ...when they killed one of the zoos beloved elephants! FYI, the main entrance has the elephant exhibit immediately behind it. Across the street from the entrance is one of Berlins principle railway stations (presumably the primary target) which is also a very short walk from the bombed out Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.
My family visited Berlin Zoo last September-the aquarium is particularly impressive!
My father while growing up between the two world wars loved to read about the aircraft and their pilots of WWI. HE would wright pilots from both sides of the conflict requesting autographs. He had a large scrap book of autographs from these veteran pilots. One of his more famous or should I say infamous autographs was that of Hermann Goring. My dad volunteered for the US Amry shortly after graduation from college in 1942, and he served in the SW Pacific theater the whole duration of the war. When he returned home after the war he found that his scrapbook had mysteriously disappeared. It is suspected that his unscrupulous father had sold the book for some fast cash while is son was away fighting. I wonder how much an autograph by Hermann Goring would be worth today?

I was in a museum in Haiti and they have the anchor of the Santa Maria ship on display. A small coin shaped circle is cut out of it. Apparently given to Lindbergh. He's really fascinating. Hero, Nazi supporter, racist turned humanitarian. He also had 2 wives and families that didn't know about each other. Strange life

Reminds me of another famous pilot of the '30's, American racing pilot Roscoe Turner. He had a really big pet lion named Gilmore. He also had sponsorship from Gilmore gasoline, which had a lion as its symbol and used the slogan "Roar with Gilmore."
Hitler himself was a strict vegetarian. The Nazi prohibition on animal cruelty was far-reaching and comprehensive. During its years in power, the Nazi party passed laws prohibiting anything that could cause an animal distress. It was made illegal to injure animals while making films or to produce foie gras by force-feeding geese. Special regulations were drafted regarding the legal way to transport animals from place to place. And the prevention of cruelty to animals was considered so important that it became a mandatory subject in school. I wonder how Hitler felt about Goering keeping wild animals as pets??? Goering keeping lions tigers etc as pets really does demonstrate his belief that germans were the master race. Pity they neber developed the same respect for humans.

My grandfather's war diary album contains a picture of Luftwaffe ace Mölders with his two lion cubs. He met him when he was stationed in France on AA duty.

A bullet wound he suffered in the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923 led Goring to become increasingly dependent on painkillers. It led to a life-long morphine addiction.

The Berlin zoo is the site of the only remaining flak tower in Berlin. Also the hill that partly covers the flak tower is in fact just bomb out building rubble gathered from the surrounding area after the war. The hill of rubble covers most of the old zoo site. The flak tower could not be completely destroyed because of the main rail line passes near by. Other cities in Germany still have their flak towers as the were too difficult to remove after the war. Allies saw these towers as a symbol of nazis and erased almost every trace of them in the capital.
There are many many remain examples of flak towers around German today. They come in many shapes and sizes. Many were build for air raid protection. This would make another great story for you to cover in great detail about these structures .
I knew an American prisoner of war who worked on other nazi build projects during the war. He once told me of how they would unload cut stone for buildings that were to be used for grand structures that were to be built after the war. Whole cities were to be built on the backs of slaves.

Fun fact: After the war, during the Nürnberg trails, Göring believed that in the future there would be statues of him everywhere. A small statue of him in the homes of every German.

Be great to see a Mark Felton clip about Goering’s yacht, Carin II. It was renamed and owned by the British Royal Family before being sold, then later purchased by a scam artist who made millions from the forged “Hitler Diaries” he wooed Edda Goering with the ship and the two hosted multiple Nazi reunions on the craft. The ship then fell into disrepair before being purchased and restored by an Arabic billionaire who is a fan of its rich history. Also, the Berlin Zoo housed an American alligator named Saturn that was a pre war gift to the Berlin Zoo in 1936, and a favourite of Hitler. After the war the reptile was moved to a zoo in Russia where it is still alive today.

Very interesting, as ever. The Berlin Zoo is also full of stories during the final battle for Berlin. The main battle line went right through the grounds. It is reported that during the first few days of Russian occupation, marked by looting and mass rape, suddenly a Russian truck appeared in the zoo to provide the elephants with fresh food. By the way, Goering was also co-founder of the Gestapo. One of the precessors of the Gestapo was the Prussian secret police. ("Preußische Geheimpolizei")

Goering's having lions as pets does not surprise me. I have understood that during WWI, some German and Allied aviation units had lions as mascots. Most or all of the lions were female. I guess they were better tempered than males. And the lions were not rotated out after ten months. They grew to full size. Maybe Uncle Hermann was accustomed to lions as a combat aviator kind of thing.

Yes but I heard he opposed the war because he supported the Nazis. Not because he was a decent man at the time. Later in life he supposedly changed his views but there is no doubt he would have been a loyal nazi if he lived in Germany
