Speaking as a Brit, the whole William Regal not being over may have been because he was being overly nationalist. They were in Manchester, a very socialist/anti-monarchist city, so they may have read "loyalty to the queen" as the sign of snobbery/monarchist elitism, which may have explained why he wasn't immediately beloved for his patrioitsm. Can't corroborate that with sources - just a thought I had listening to this.
