The Great Northern and the Northern Pacific ultimately merged in the 1970s and became Burlington Northern. The NP line between Fertile and Crookston ultimately became the main line to Grand Forks. After the merger the NP line from Fairfax Ave westward was tore up and abandoned through town leaving only a connecting spur from the NP line running along Fairfax Ave to the mainline just north of the sunflower processing plant on Main Street. This connecting spur and the rest of the line to Fertile was abandoned in the late 90s. Today nothing but the track bed remains from Crookston to Ulen MN.
Fascinating. Good history well told, thank you. The trackbeds still very traceable on Google Maps.
