No traction control, no ABS, no power steering? Just the way God intended! Very cool to hear a car guy story that ends with the guy still having the car. You couldn't pay me to drive my 1981 Mustang but glad you have yours!
I split my sports car driving time between stock examples of a 1972 Datsun 240Z and 1993 MR2 Turbo. Both cars brings a smile to my face on the twisty back roads.
Nice driving and very nice MR2. This second gen MR2 was the sweet spot and my favorite MR2. So glad you where able to keep it and set up up the way you wanted. I had a first gen Honda CRX in high school. I loved that car. I drove it in college and I even used it to move into my first apartment. It was a very sad day when I had to get rid of it. Enjoy that MR2 and it is even made better with the fact your wife loves it too. That right there should never be taken for granted.
Just a quick clarification since I think I gave a few folks the wrong idea. I bought this car in 1996 used. It was 6 years old at that point. IIRC it was around $5k. No way I could have afforded it new back then!
love these little cars. kept escaping my grasp until 2021. now that i've had one (and have logged serious miles on it with the v6 swap). i now own 5 more. these things are amazing. now i've got a spyder too.. getting ready for its (hopefully) 300whp engine swap... because why not
Great story behind your car and thanks for taking us along for the nostalgic ride! I also call my 93T my time machine, though purchased in 2006. My first MR2 was an 87NA, later SC after the NA engine blew at the track (sound familiar!), that got me through college as well. These cars really take you back to pure, visceral driving - yet are still comfortable enough for a highway road trip.
Had mine about 20 years, it was my first car! GTS version which was the hardtop JDM turbo. My engine also died so I went the 2GR route. Have bought other sports cars since but I’ll never sell the MR2.
Gread vid, thanks for telling the story. A long time ago a Toyota salesman tried to sell me a Mr. Two as "the Japanese Ferrari". I ended up with a Gen4 Honda Prelude instead. Much later I ended up with a Nissan 35 ounce, thereby continuing the Japanese trend for typographically ambiguous model names.
SW20 MR2 is a great car, but the wheelbase needed to be longer. I have a Lotus Europa S2 Type 54, its wheelbase is longer because it has a N-S Engine and a N--S transaxle behind the engine that is behind the driver. The SW20 has a E-W engine and an E-W transaxle so it can have a shorter wheelbase. The shorter wheelbase is the reason why it has a snap over steer Another factor for this reputation is that a mid engined car does not drive or handle like a hatchback or a sedan, you have to drive it a different way, not too much steering input, be gentle and smooth with the throttle, a mid engined car can do more than a hot hatch, when driven correctly. My Lotus Europa is a beast, it also has no power steering, ABS or traction control and it is 611Kg with a tuned R16 Gordini, It loves chasing Porsche 930's. maybe the MR2 should be driven by more experienced drivers...??? just a thought? anyway, an SW20 is my Lotus's sister, I love them
Hi Tim. Loved you on This Week in Tech. Stopped listening to that cuz I got a little tired of Leo cutting people off. I remember during an episode you said that you ice raced an AW11? I guess that car's gone? I have an '89 mint, white Supercharged AW11 with the maroon interior. Tastefully modified. I live in Quebec and she get's garaged every winter. Values are going up and I could never imagine driving her on salted roads and even autocrossing her is out of the question. Respect to you for doing what you do!!
@@phinds1 sounds beautiful! I ice race Subarus, actually. Started with an old Impreza then a WRX and now a 2004 STI. But I bet the MR2 would be a lot of fun out there with the right tires, now that it has a proper diff anyway.
When i meet another girl I'd one day like to recreate your bouquet toss move, my current (4th) sw has yet to run in my ownership coming up 8 years, hopefully have it running in next 90 days 😅

I really enjoyed this review. awesome vid man. Enjoy her forever.
@@MonsterChad27 thanks, I will!
Great video Tim, nice that you've had it all these years. I've had mine 18 years this year.
That's fantastic. Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine!
I've owned two: a silver '85 manual and a red '91, also manual w/t-tops. I miss both of them.
What a machine! Good thing you kept it all these years!
I’ve never driven these types of ‘analog’ sports cars, but sure hope to one day!

a wild CudaMan appears 😅. "MR2 Fan" here from the gtx forums
@@technosworld2 No way! lol. On goes the lightbulb. I don't seem to remember you posting much about this car there, or your adventures with it.

Man that is a really really good looking car.
Great video! I've had my '93 NA for 6 years and am finally close to completing my Gen 4 swap (now that everyone else is going 2GR, oh well).
Car nostalgia is the best. Awesome video!

Longer wheelbase for Europa? Online data shows Europa's wheelbase is 91 to 92. MR2's wheelbase is 94.5.

Just put a LSD in my Impreza a couple months back... Its always one of those mods where you are like, "I should have done this first!" LMAO

Thank you so much!
Small tip, try different tire sizes on a course like this, 14,15,16 inches. It's a quick way to adjust your gearing ratio.
Not possible with 14" rotor! Plus it would cost way too much money to change everything. No thanks!
Get a beams redtop mr2 from Japan, it has all the options and a high revving 200hp motor

short wheelbase. mid engine. SPIN. 😂. Need 70’s 80’s F1 rear slicks
