    This was wonderful! We attended Independent Pres when we lived there (just two blocks away on E. Perry St and Orleans Sq!), and the architecture is just stunning! The history of the original congregation is wonderful as well. I'd been inside St. John's maybe once or twice, and it is gorgeous. I am a Reformed Presbyterian, but I so appreciate the beauty of the artwork throughout a French Gothic style catholic church and love to sit in a pew and just absorb the talent and skill of the artists and builders. The iconography was developed in ancient times before most people could read - but they understood pictures and that helped them understand and remember the stories and messages. It was a good idea that became corrupted as parishioners started to worship the images rather than God. That was why the Protestants did away with all that decor, to focus on the message, as you pointed out. I do hope you'll do another video of more churches, including Temple Mickve Israel, and possibly one of the historic black churches as well.

    The lectern is NOT for the lay readers, who read from the pulpit whence the celebrant preaches, but is actually for the cantor, who leads the congregation in the responsorial songs. - A Cathedral parishioner

    Lovely informative lecture..I think I'll convert to Calvinism-Presbyterianism...lol..a lovely church ..architecturally, it's the Church Style that seems functional, practical and most sober...the staircase in the front, the side 2nd floor seating,, the clear-glass windows....a very good use of space and sensible approach in my eyes that resonates with me....Keep on trucking..I learned a lot in this lecture..Thanks for Sharing..

      Fortunately, it has a large downtown area so that the many tourists at any given time are pretty spread out (except on the waterfront) and adjacent areas are blossoming, especially the Bull Street corridor south of Forsyth Park, offering more opportunities to enjoy the city as a local.

    there's a whole lot of links between Savannah and Boston

    • @urbantraces9640
      @urbantraces9640  3 года назад

      Yes indeed. Savannah historically was connected with the Northeast while Charleston was connected more with the Caribbean.

    It may seem like a small point, but a “crucifix” must have a “corpus” on it. A “cross” doesn’t have a corpus. So the pulpit of the Baptist church has a cross, not a crucifix on it. Take care and great work.

    • @urbantraces9640
      @urbantraces9640  3 года назад

      @@urbantraces9640 these churches are on another level - a level i've never seen. And the whole empty niches in wall was so interesting knowing all other christians would place a statue or some type of fiugure there. Sometimes emptyness says more than fullness, and you know those spaces make a statemnet since they were built into the wall to be empty.

      That was certainly a concern of some in the 19th century who saw Gothic as a truly Christian architecture. Thank you for your comment.
