Seneca: Of Consolation to Marcia

  • Marcia actively mourned the death of her son Metilius for over three years. In his consolation, Seneca attempts to convince her that the fate of her son, while tragic, should not have been a surprise. She knew many other mothers who had lost their sons; why should she expect her own son to survive her? The acknowledgement, even expectation, of the worst of all possible outcomes is a tenet of Seneca's Stoic philosophy. While Seneca sympathised with Marcia, he reminded her that "we are born into a world of things which are all destined to die," and that if she could accept that no one is guaranteed a just life (that is, one in which sons always outlive their mothers), she could finally end her mourning and live the rest of her life in peace.

I wish I had shared this letter of consolation that speaks to the reason within us, with my mother in law. She mourned the loss of her 38 year old daughter and her grief never seemed to dull. She grieved deeply for 17 years until her passing in 2014.

Really enjoy your audiobooks and have drawn a lot of inspiration and lessons from the lessons of the stoics. I thoroughly enjoy your narration/reading of them! I hope you're doing all right and have not given up, considering it's been a while since your last upload.

Time stamp: 29:40; “For at his birth he was told that death was his doom. It is the law under which we are born, the fate which has pursued him ever since he left his mother’s womb. We have come under the dominion of Fortune (chance). A harsh and unconquerable dominion it is, at her caprice we must suffer all things, whether we deserve them or not.”

Why Seneca is often seen with a ruby ring ? In "Quo Vadis 1951" and in the painting "The suicide of Seneca" by Manuel Domínguez Sánchez Seneca can be seen with this king of ring.
