Also, notably, "Kiribati" is pronounced "KEER-i-bass". (I'm not certain how to pronounce Liechtenstein, but I know it's not like "leash"--EDIT: actually I'm wrong. Thanks you commenters below.)

    • @sofiaormbustad7467
      @sofiaormbustad7467 3 года назад +9

      Yes, but also. Many of the countries invaded by Germany or the Soviet union had very small armies (Norway had tried to disolve their army in 1929, Denmark surrendered in less than 6 hours, the baltic states were pretty much in the same state and Luxembourg well, just got overrunned wothout much fighting afaik. Also, both the vatican and San Marino were attacked by german troops retreating from Italy in 1944). So Europe, after experiencing two wars just utterly destroying their continent, realized they had to keep a large army because one aggressor can take down dousins of pacifist countries. Latin America has been fairly lucky not having had many wars, due to USA interviening in their back yard; although atleast two wars come to mind (the war between Paraguay vs Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. And Chile vs Bolivia and Peru. Though there have been many more, like the Chaco war, the Acre rebellion, the Ecuador-Peruvian war, the football war, and alot of rebelions in Mexico). And same goes for the pacific. Those small countries are basicaly american protectorates and thus live under their shield and protection, same goes for Europe. There's a reason like Tannu Tuva isn't an independent demilitarized country, or Bahrain, or Brunei, or Singapore, or Burundi (although Mauritius and the Sechelles being demilitarized kinda surprised me, but it makes sense being so close to both british, american and even french protection (and India never really being a threat to them).
      Although the world would be great if there were no armies or wars!

    The Icelandic coast guard has been involved in at least 3 conflicts with UK.
    Let's not forget the Cod Wars ;)
    The Icelandic Coast Guard even had a special weapon deployed to stop UK from fishing in Icelandic waters.
    Also at the end of the conflict (which Iceland wun all the time) Iceland got all its demands and now every nation that has implemented what Iceland wanted for themselves. More info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cod_Wars

    It always catches me a little off guard the way people pronounce St Lucia. Before recently, I'd only heard my mum, someone who studied Scandinavian languages, say it, and she pronounces it like "Santa Louseea". Not sure if this is true for other Scandinavian language speakers. Only recently did I hear the "Saint Lusha" pronunciation.

    I think that if a country doesn't have a military force it should make some sort of agreement where no nation can wage war on them. A treaty like that could protect countries like Panama and Iceland from getting DESTROYED by another country.

    • @OleLeik
      @OleLeik Год назад

      Don't know much about the others, but Iceland is a NATO country and
      member nations do air patrols on a rotating basis. It has been under the military protection of the United States since 1951, which had a military base and fighters stationed there up to 2006 or so. No standing military doesn't mean much if the US/Canada can and will scramble a presence there on short notice.
      That's really the only way countries like this can have no defence and stay "peaceful". No one will mess with them when someone with military might is likely to step in and bail them out.
